Learn More About Tiling

A tile is a skinny object usually square or rectangular in shape. A tile is a manufactured piece of hard-wearing material such as ceramic, stone, metal, baked clay, or even glass, generally used for covering roofs, floors, walls, or other objects such as tabletops. Alternatively, tile can sometimes take in hand to thesame units made from lightweight materials such as perlite, wood, and mineral wool, typically used for wall and ceiling applications. In marginal sense, a tile is a construction tile or similar object, such as rectangular counters used in playing games (see tile-based game). The word is derived from the French word tuile, which is, in turn, from the Latin word tegula, meaning a roof tile composed of ablaze clay.

Tiles are often used to form wall and floor coverings, and can range from easy square tiles to mysterious or mosaics. Tiles are most often made of ceramic, typically glazed for internal uses and unglazed for roofing, but additional materials are as well as commonly used, such as glass, cork, concrete and additional composite materials, and stone. Tiling stone is typically marble, onyx, granite or slate. Thinner tiles can be used upon walls than upon floors, which require more durable surfaces that will resist impacts.

How to cover tiles cheaply

So I have a tile backsplash in my kitchen that I loathe. I have been debating redoing it, etc. Everything seems so difficult and our budget is under a couple of hundred dollars for this project. I do not have a lot of area to cover, so I was thinking.. MAYBE PAINT OVER THEM?

Now these are not typical tiles, they are not smooth so I am not sure that I would need to prime them. We are most definitely going much darker. We have black granite counters so we are thinking of maybe black, or even I mighty try talking my hubby into a brick red. (shh dont tell lol)

How to cover tiles cheaply

it looks like tumbled marble that is what I have on my backsplash here is how to paint them but you could also use peel and stick tiles to cover it

I completely agree with Cheryl. You can totally paint that backsplash so its easier to live with until you can replace it!

Thank you both so much!

An idea you could save up for is Z-Brick, available at Home Depot and Lowes, in the meantime, you can certainly paint.

The peel and stick would also work, probably not as well as painting because the surface is irregular giving less areas of adhesion.

You can paint it. Here’s a link with the details:

Yes, you can definitely paint the backsplash for an easier replacement.

You can definitely paint it and save yourself some money. I painted a ceramic back splash a few years ago that was supposed to be temporary, but it looked so good that I’ve never replaced the tile. Hopefully the same things happens to you. 😊

You can paint it. Another idea would be to cover it with sheets of panelling. 🙂

Hi Kerry Ann, you can certainly paint over them! Hope this video helps you out,

How to cover tiles cheaply

Yes you can paint tile

Hi Kerry: Here’s a site that tells how to do that. You don’t say what your tile is composed of, but give this site a shot:

Hello yes painting a backsplash woukd be an economical way to reinvent your situation . What a great opportunity to update and have a wonderful transformation

Heres some helpful links

I would go with a tile painting kit as you have a rough texture finish. I would first try painting the grout black or dark gray in a small section and stain the tile with a terra cotta stain to see if you like that.

PAINTING A TILE BACKSPLASH IS A SIMPLE, AFFORDABLE AND DURABLE WAY TO UPDATE YOUR KITCHEN! THIS TUTORIAL SHOWS YOU EXACTLY HOW TO PAINT YOUR TILE BACKSPLASH IN 5 EASY STEPS.

Step 1: First of all, Clean the Travertine Tiles

Just like you need to avoid hard brushes and corrosive cleaning agents for cleaning marble surfaces, you also need to do the same for travertine tiles. In a bowl, mix one part of soup or soft detergent with four parts of water. Take a sponge and clean the travertine tiles with the help of this mixture. If there are persistent stains, you can gently scrub the surface with the sponge. Make sure that you rinse and dry the surface thoroughly. Do not ever apply paint on wet travertine surfaces.

Step 2: Sealant Application

With the help of a paintbrush, you need to apply the stone sealant to the tiles. Sealant will protect the paint of the travertine against the external factors and will prolong the lifetime of travertine surfaces. Since travertine has a porous nature, this application will also provide a protection against paint absorption and after the application, you will definitely have better results.

Step 3: Time to Paint

There are hundreds of color options that you can choose for travertine tiles. Make sure you choose a color that will be in harmony with the color of other decorative elements around the travertine tiles. Also, make sure that the paint you will use is water and moisture resistant. There are several brands on markets which sell water and moisture resistant paints.

Now, it is time to paint. You do not need to be an experienced painter to give a good painting to the travertine tiles. The first thing you need is a good paint brush. There are several types of paintbrush that you can find in your local stores. Pick one according to your choice. Before you start painting, make sure that the surface is clean and dry. Then, apply the first coat of the paint. Remember, one single coat, even if it is thick, will not give you a good result. The best thing to do is to apply multiple yet light coats. Before applying the second coat, let the first one dry for a few minutes. Apply the coats until you see the desired color tone. Then, you need to let the paint dry for at least twenty four hours.

Step 4: Sealant Application, Again

When you are done with the painting, you might think that the result is satisfying enough. But, it is not. You should protect the paint against external factors such as water, dust, wind etc. Another coat of sealant will give the protection that you need. So, apply a new coat of sealant on the paint. And let it dry.

Tip: For more professional looks, it is highly important that you choose a color that matches your old travertine tiles. It will not look good if you apply white paint on dark colored travertine tiles.

That is it. Now you are done with painting your old and boring travertine tiles
