Control your breathing
Crying is typically a response to an extreme emotional situation, which tends to send your breathing patterns into disarray. Focus on bringing your breathing back to a normal flow. Count to ten, take slow deep breaths, and focus on relaxing.

Blink rapidly

  • Think of a time when you were heartbroken
  • Think of a time when you lost someone you were close to
  • Think of a time when you were miserable and lonely

#2. Get in your character. Completely

This is a common technique that a lot of actors use. If you are completely engrossed in your character, you will start empathising with your character’s emotions. As a result of this, tears will naturally come out of your eyes as you will be living your character’s life at that moment.

#3. Music

Everyone has at least one song that makes them tear up. Listening to songs that you can emotionally relate to will help you give a remarkable performance and you will find it easier to bring out your tears, happy or sad.

  • Make a playlist of all the songs that trigger your emotions
  • Keep this playlist on your phone or a portable device so you can listen to it before your performance

Using your imagination is a powerful technique to cry on cue. This method helps you make the given situation more personal and believable. It is simple, all you have to do is try imagining scenarios, mainly hypothetical that would make you very sad. What if something terrible happens to you? What if you lose your loved ones?

The best thing about this technique is that the imagination is completely yours. It does not have to be related to the scene or the character you are playing. No one has to know what made you cry, it could be your secret.

Have you ever wondered how actors cry in movies and on television? Some of the greatest scenes in history are largely thanks to the actor’s ability to conjure real tears. However, sometimes they need help. That’s where the makeup department comes in. Arielle Toelke, a Local 798 Makeup Artist who works in tv and film showed us four different methods that achieve four different crying results. Following is a transcript of the video.

Arielle Toelke: I’m Arielle Toelke, and I’m a makeup artist in Local 798. And I work on film and television.

There’s a lot of actors that have a hard time crying when prompted. Some actors are really good at crying on cue. And some actors need a little bit of help. So we employ one method, two methods, sometimes a lot of different methods to sort of get them to where they need to be visually for the scene.

Abby Tang: I am ready to cry. I am always ready to cry.

Toelke: I feel like sometimes in a lot of comedy, you know, it’ll be like one tear getting you going and running in with an eye drop. You know you’re just standing right off of camera, and you can just run in and do that one drop. And you know get it ready before they roll like you know. So yes of course, there’s a benefit to that.

Toelke: In addition to the actor’s natural tears, we might use like a Vaseline-based product in order for it to look like there’s been a lot of crying. Sometimes even if an actor’s getting there, sometimes this helps them get there faster. And the artist will always have some sort of Vaseline-based product in their kit, whether it’s, you know, like Aquaphor or some sort of clear gloss.

Then there’s the two menthol applications. One is the Kryolan Tear Stick, which looks like a lipstick with menthol in it, and that’s applied under the eyes. And that also is like a little bit kinda shiny so it sort of does do that little bit of double duty that a Vaseline-based product will. With either of the menthol products, do not get that directly in somebody’s eye. Nobody’s gonna like lose an eye over it, but it’s definitely very uncomfortable. So using the tear stick you want to be careful when applying it that you get it close but not in the eye. And that your actor doesn’t rub their eye.

Tang: Okay, yeah. Here it comes. Yep. Yep.

Toelke: Yeah, try to keep your eyes open.

Toelke: And then there’s the blower, which you literally blow menthol air into somebody’s eye.

Tang: Oh yeah. Now there it is. Okay.

Toelke: Which totally irritates your eyes. And the benefit to using the menthol versions is that because it’s literally irritating the eye, the eye will get red. So if you’ve ever seen yourself after you’ve cried, your eyes are puffy and red. It’s because you’re sort of like irritating and rubbing your eye and so that menthol application does that to your actor. You always want to blow into your hand first and make sure that the cotton is there, and that it didn’t move. I’ve heard horror stories where “Oh, I didn’t know. You know somebody borrowed it, and then I blew menthol crystals in somebody’s eye” and then — nobody wants that. That would just be, you know, you’ve completely ruined the scene for everybody.

Colic is when a baby cries a lot but there’s no obvious cause. It’s a common problem that should get better by around 3 or 4 months of age. But call NHS 111 or see a GP if you’re worried.

Check if your baby has colic

All babies cry, but your baby may have colic if they cry more than 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for at least 1 week but are otherwise healthy.

They may cry more often in the afternoon and evening.

It may also be colic if, while they are crying:

  • it’s hard to soothe or settle your baby
  • they clench their fists
  • they go red in the face
  • they bring their knees up to their tummy or arch their back
  • their tummy rumbles or they’re very windy

It can start when a baby is a few weeks old. It usually stops by the time they’re 3 to 4 months old.

If you’re not sure it’s colic

There are other reasons why your baby may be crying.

It could be they:

  • are hungry
  • have a dirty nappy
  • have wind
  • have reflux
  • have constipation

If you’re not sure what’s wrong, it’s best to speak to your health visitor, call NHS 111 or see a GP to be sure.

Things you can try to soothe your baby

Your baby does not usually need to see a doctor if they have colic. Speak to your health visitor for advice and support.

Health visitors and doctors will usually advise you to:

  • hold or cuddle your baby when they’re crying a lot
  • sit or hold your baby upright during feeding to stop them swallowing air
  • wind your baby after feeds
  • gently rock your baby over your shoulder
  • gently rock your baby in their Moses basket or crib, or push them in their pram
  • bath your baby in a warm bath
  • have some gentle white noise like the radio or TV in the background to distract them
  • keep feeding your baby as usual

Other things you may hear about include:

  • anti-colic drops and herbal and probiotic supplements
  • changes to your diet if you’re breastfeeding
  • applying gentle pressure to your baby’s spine (spinal manipulation) or skull (cranial osteopathy)

But there’s very little evidence these things work. Speak to your health visitor for further advice.

Non-urgent advice: Call NHS 111 or see a GP if:

  • you’re worried about your baby’s crying
  • your baby has colic and nothing seems to be working
  • you’re finding it hard to cope
  • your baby is not growing or putting on weight as expected
  • your baby still has symptoms of colic after 4 months of age

A GP will check for possible causes of your baby’s crying.

Immediate action required: Go to A&E or call 999 if:

  • your baby has a weak or high-pitched cry
  • your baby’s cry does not sound like their normal cry

You know better than anyone else what your child is usually like. Trust your instincts if you think something is seriously wrong, particularly if they have other worrying symptoms.

How to cope if you have a colicky baby

Looking after a colicky baby can be upsetting, but it’s usually nothing to worry about and will pass with time.

Ask for support:

  • from other parents, family or friends
  • by calling the Cry-sis helpline on 0845 122 8669 (9am to 10pm, 7 days a week)
  • from your health visitor, by calling NHS 111 or seeing a GP

Causes of colic

It’s not known exactly what causes some babies to get colic. But it may be because babies find it harder to digest food when they’re young.

Or they may be crying because they have problems with food allergies, such as a cows’ milk allergy.

Crying on screen is even harder than it looks. One of the defining moments in Ari Aster’s 2019 horror film Midsommar featured Florence Pugh’s Dani Ardor screaming and crying alongside a group of women from the Harga commune. Dani has just seen her boyfriend (Jack Reynor) having sex with another woman from the commune, and it causes all her pent-up rage and grief to come pouring out of her. The other women reflect her emotions back at her by screaming and crying as well.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, Pugh detailed how difficult the scene was to shoot and how much she appreciated her female costars. She shared a behind-the-scenes picture of her and the other actors holding each other and crying; it looks as powerful and emotional as the actual footage in the film.

“This was THE scene,” Pugh wrote. “The scene which, all who were included knew exactly how many days there were until we shot it.”

Pugh wrote that the picture captured the moment the first assistant director said that they had wrapped the scene.

“I’ve never been an actor that finds it easy to cry on camera,” Pugh said. “It’s something very personal to me and despite finding other aspects of acting exciting and thrilling, I find crying very scary and at some points in my career directors having to change the scene because I couldn’t do it.”

She continued, “on this film, in this scene, I found a true sisterhood. We all looked at each other before we started rolling and knew it would be hard. And awkward. And strange. And unnatural. We knew it wouldn’t be pleasurable. But by the end we were all in each other’s laps and crying and allowing our bodies to keep heaving.”

Midsommar was one of three 2019 films Pugh appeared in, alongside Fighting With My Family and Little Women. Together they made quite a breakout year for her (Little Women even earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination). Thanks to the pandemic, 2020 didn’t feature any new Pugh films, but 2021 is set to have quite a one-two punch of Black Widow and Don’t Worry Darling with Harry Styles.

Believe it or not, but casting the role of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’s BFF in 1981 wasn’t as simple as just phoning home.

Casting director Marci Liroff explains in this week’s video that the young actor who was originally chosen to play Elliott failed miserably in a game of Dungeons & Dragons. The 12-sided die did not roll in his favor when his true nature came out, revealing that he was not the sweet little angel director Steven Spielberg wanted to be Drew Barrymore’s older brother and E.T.’s bestie.

“In about three minutes it became very clear that nobody liked this little boy,” Liroff said. “He became very bossy– it just showed he was not our kid. So I basically had to start over.”

Once nine-year-old Henry Thomas was recommended, he was flown out from Texas to read lines and improv in front of Liroff, Spielberg and some others.

As you can see from this footage, he hit it out of the park.

“The improvisation was so heartfelt and honest that I gave him the part right there,” Spielberg told Premiere magazine in 1982. “I was blown away by this nine-year-old. Then I came to realize he’s an adult actor, not a nine-year-old. He’s a very controlled, methodical performer who measures what he does and feels what he does and yet broadcasts it in a totally subtle way. His performance is so controlled, unlike most kid performers, who seem to be giving you 150 percent on every shot. Henry’s performance is just a bread crumb at a time, but he takes you in a wonderful direction to a very, very rousing catharsis. He’s just a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ kid.”

Nailing an audition and getting hired on the spot a rare occurrence for Thomas, he said.

“I finished my scene and they were in tears, and Steven says, ‘Kid, you got the job.’ I keep waiting for that to happen again,” Thomas told The Today Show in 2012. “It was the only part of my career that I knew I had [the role] before I left the audition room. “
