Alright so this next move we’re going to jump in to is one of my favorites, it’s called the Dougie. It’s a really famous move. A lot of people are doing it in the club nowadays so we’re going to teach you guys here so you can take it to the club tonight and really show off. I want you guys to watch it first and then we’ll break it down step by step. We go five, six, five, six, seven, eight and five, six, seven, eight. Alright so let’s break that down step by step.

This move has a lot of personal style in. So once you get the basics down you really got to add your own personal flare to this move to make it work for you. Okay? So you’re going to start with your feet together, kind of facing this general angle. We’re going to step back with one foot on one. Now when we step in we’re going to turn to face this way on and. Alright I’m just going to step in on my toe.

So step out two, so step in on and. Again, three, and four, and five, and six, and seven, and eight. Alright now the big thing about this move is you’re going to have a little dip when you step that foot in together. So I’m up right here standing up and when I turn that step and foot in I take a little deep, down. So I take a slight [inaudible – 0:01:59.6] I bend at my knees. Stepping up again, out, two, just the step in, and three, and four, and five, and six, and seven, and eight and.

Alright the next step for this move is as you step out, you almost want to lead with your head kind of looking over your shoulders just slightly. So step one, and two, and three, and four, and five, and six, and seven, and eight, and. Alright so we’ve got that step back and that turn going. Now let’s add that hand into it as well. Okay so what I want to do now is when we step on the one, our feet altogether here, I step out and this hand comes up just like this. Alright, now as I step in my hand is just going to fall down to step in, then the other hand comes up, two, to step in and three, and four, and five, and six, and seven, and eight, and.

Alright before we speed it up at all, let’s take a look from the back so you ca see all the little details. Alright let’s turn around starting from that same starting position, nice and slow, five, six, seven, eight, we go one and two, and three, and four, and five, and six, and seven, and eight, and. Good job guys let’s turn around. So you’ve got all the basic parts of this move down. Now what you’re going to do is add your own style to it. Okay so what I want you to do this time is really step up as far as you can to give yourself a nice dip when you step together. Again, up and down, up and down. Alright so what I want to do right now is try it with counts again a little bit faster, those same single counts.

Remember all those parts working together, we’ll make that move look really good. From that starting position, five, six, seven, eight, we go one ,and two, and four, and five, and six, and seven, and again. We go one, and two, and three, and four, and five, and six, seven, and eight and. Alright now we’re going to add one more element to it, we’re going to add a single, single double step with this. Now we’ll speed it up and try it with music. So all you got to do is do that from the first step, you step out like normal, one, step in and two, and from here you’re going to double it up, just slide your leg out, one and two. Alright and then you’re going to step back out together and three, and four, double it up, one and two, together, out, together, out, together, double it up, together, out, together, out, together, double it up. Again, out, together, out, together, double it up, together, out, in, out, in, double it up, and stop.

Alright so we’re going to take that basic system we just learned, that basic rhythm and pattern and start speeding it up now. One more time with music, a little bit faster and then we’ll try it one more time with counts a little bit faster and then we’ll give it a shot with music. Same starting position, five, six, seven, eight, we go single, single, double it up, and single, single, double it up, we go one, two, three, four and five, and six, and seven, again we go one, two, three, four, and five, six, seven and eight. Alright so take that in practice till you get over and over till you get those steps together. When you’re ready we’re going to try it with music.

So now what I want to do is give it a shot with the music, it’s going to be a little bit faster now, listen to these counts. You’re going to go one, and two, and three, and four, and five, and six, and seven and eight. Alright we’ll try that same single single double we just did stepping out on this leg first. From that beginning position we’re going to give it a shot. Here we go, and five, six, five, six, seven, eight. Good, get that deep in your knees, have fun with it, let’s see how people add their little own flavor to it let’s check out Jamel, hey, nice, check out KC, good. One more time and one, two, three, four and five, six, seven, eight.

The style of movement started back in the 1970’s when disco and funk dancing were popular. So the roots of what you’ll learn in a Hip Hop dance class can be traced back over 40 years.

In that time, lots of different moves, steps and styles have been created. So you’ll find there are very few set boundaries where one dance ends and another begins. You will dance a blend of styles in your Street dance class. You could find that after just a few lessons, you’ve experienced many of the classic Hip Hop dance techniques.

That way, perhaps you will prefer one over the other, and as your dancing progresses you can go to a more specialist class.

So beginners classes are a fantastic way to learn a lot about most types of Street dancing in a fairly short time.

What to wear to Hip Hop class – clothes, shoes and hair

How to dance hip hop

Hip Hop dance clothes can be more or less anything, but we’ve still got one great tip for you.

Baggy street clothes are the best choice, but remember Hip Hop is incredibly hard work so just make sure whatever you choose, you’re going to keep as cool as possible. Our tip is bring something to put on top of your workout wear when you leave the lesson, so you keep nice and warm and don’t cramp up as much. You’re a dancer now – you’ve got to learn to take care of your body the way the pro-dancers do.

This tip is particularly important if the class doesn’t have a cool down at the end that stretches out your muscles after you’ve used them so much. But don’t worry, you can learn ours, and can stretch on your own if your class doesn’t have a cool down routine. Just follow our online class all the way through.

How to dance hip hop

You can wear whatever clothes you want to Hip Hop class, but you’ve GOT to get your footwear right. You MUST wear sneakers that give you really good arch and ankle support.

You are going to be doing a lot of hopping, stomping and stamps in a Hip Hop lesson. So to prevent injury, you must have a good pair of dance sneakers on.

You absolutely should not try a Hip Hop lesson in ballet shoes, socks or bare feet – you must have support.

(However, as Lil’ J says in the clip, if you are dancing on nice thick carpet at home, arch support isn’t so important – but it really is if you are dancing on a hard floor.)

If you dance Hip Hop on a hard floor without arch and ankle support you’ll jar your ligaments and lower back, and put enormous strain on your joints, which as every dancer knows, is something to be avoided at all costs.

So if you are going to take your dancing seriously, get yourself a seriously good pair of sneakers.

Hip Hop Hair

How to dance hip hop

If you’re a beginner dancer, and aren’t used to going to dance classes, you might be tempted to just put your hair into the high ponytail that you see so many dancers wear.

And they do this for a good reason. You can’t be constantly pushing your hair out of your face – it can be distracting when you’re trying to concentrate on what the teacher’s doing and can ruin the look of your movement. And of course, dance classes are hard work and you’re going to sweat, so the ponytail is often the obvious choice.

However, if you are going to go for the classic high ponytail, make sure that it’s really secure, and use as few clips as possible. A bit of product (smoothing cream or serum and some spray or moisture mist) is better for keeping stray hairs in place than clips which could fly out and hit you (or someone else) in the eye…

But, if you’ve got very thick hair, there can be a problem with the high ponytail in a Hip Hop class. This is because you could be doing some quite fast spins, and the way to turn your head quickly in dance is to ‘spot’ (that is, to pick a single spot right in front of you to focus on, and as you turn, you keep looking at that spot until you absolutely have to turn your head and when you do, you quickly whip it around to focus back on that same spot as soon as possible).

If you do this right, and you’ve got your thick hair in a high ponytail, guess what? Your own hair basically punches you in the eye. Sounds funny but it really can be quite painful.
So for thick hair, a lower ponytail at the nape of your neck could be the solution, or of course a bun – but again, make sure you use product to keep it in place and the minimum of pins and clips.

Or, if your hair doesn’t really fall right into your face, it’s perfectly OK to have your hair loose in a Hip Hop class (totally different from Ballet class, where wearing hair down is a no-no). Just try to style it in a way that’s not going to distract you, as your arms are going to be forming part of the dance moves, so you can’t keep putting your hand up to your face or head to push your hair around.

When you dance along with our online class, perhaps experiment a bit with exactly what style is going to suit you and your dancing.

Truth is that a great cut with loads of defined movement and proper styling will actually accent your moves – particularly the spins, turns and lunges. Hip Hop is the one dance style where your hair gets to move a bit too. So go for it.

9 of the Most Popular Hip Hop Dance Styles

Hip Hop has emerged since its introduction in the early 1970s and now includes far too many styles to list. Hip Hop is an edgy, fresh and powerful urban dance style also known as Street Dance. The beginning of locking, popping and crumping, Hip Hop is mostly performed to rap, urban and not surprisingly, hip hop music. Funky, high-top dance sneakers are normally worn by dancers. What sets Hip Hop apart from several other dance styles is that its unusual street dance was freestyle in nature and did not follow a predefined choreography. A style of dance that is free to own expression, Hip hop dancers were free to interpret the dance in any way they could, and this lead to several innovative and interesting dance styles. Still, as many of the other Hip Hop dance studios near me will agree, these are the nine most prevalent forms of Hip Hop-

1) B-boying (Breakdancing)

Thought to be one of the very original styles of Hip Hop, B-boying is characterized by acrobatic Vigour Movements, upright movements, and footwork. Dancers also punctuate their routines with a movement known as the Freeze.

2) Locking and Popping

While technically two styles, Locking and Popping usually go hand in hand. Locking requires fast actions, sharp pauses, and extravagant gestures. Popping, on the other hand, is a bouncy style that demands extreme use of counter-tempo.

Funk, which is a coalition of Disco and Soul, uses a blend of fluid and sharp moves and is usually extremely choreographed. Locking and Popping are also frequently combined into this dance style.

Up rock uses a blend of many dance moves to build soulful dances. Typically, this dance style includes:

  • Shuffles
  • Spins
  • Freestyle Movements
  • Jerks
  • Hand Gestures

5) Liquid Dance

As its title implies, Liquid Dance is a fluid and delicate dance with a centre on the arms and palms. It may include some forms of pantomime and exceptional dancers will use a range of body moves.

Another fluid-like style, Boogaloo as directed by Hip Hop dance studios near me, uses the complete body sliding smoothly like butter, often with the rolling of the hips, head, and knees.

If we had to pick a Hip Hop style that invokes sensuality, it would be Reggae for its Latin influences mixed with more modern Hip Hop moves set to the modern evolution of Reggae music.

Lyrical is a unique style of Hip Hop in that it tells a story and is danced to the words of the music instead of the beat. It is usually fluid and more interpretive than other styles of Hip Hop.

Stepping is a group dance that includes using body actions to create percussive beats. This is accomplished through:

  • Stomping or Steps
  • Clapping or Slapping
  • Spoken Word

Did you know that hip hop dance is more than 30 years old? It became widely known after the first dance crews that were formed in the 1970’s. In this article, I will be talking about two different styles: breaking and the funk styles, which are the oldest of all the hip hop dances.

Where Did Hip Hop Dance Get Started?

First of all, hip hop dance evolved out of the hip-hop culture. It refers to dance moves danced to mainly hip-hop music. Back in the 1970s, Black and Latino Americans created a wide range of styles, which include breaking, locking, and popping. The difference between hip-hop dance and other forms of dance is the moves are not choreographed like you see in some studios. It is often freestyle dance, moves that are made up on the spot.

Although, the older form of hip-hop dance were created back in the 1970’s, they got started in two different locations, half in New York and others in California.

Breaking was created in The Bronx, New York.

Guess who had a big influence on the early form of breaking! If you guessed the “God Father of Soul”, then you are right!.

Remember the James Brown’s “Good Foot” dance? Who could forget that dance, right? Well..it started out in the early 70’s as an early form of breaking. At that time, breaking was not floor oriented like we see done today. It was performed standing up, which is called toprock.

If breaking was started in New York, then the funk styles were started in California. The funk Styles refers to various street dance styles danced to funk music. James Brown, also, had a big influence on the boogaloo style of dance. It was inspired by his dance called the popcorn. Funk styles is consisted of two different dance styles, which have their own histories and set of dance moves: Locking and Popping.

Locking was created by Don Campbell in the late 1960’s. Popping was created by Sam Solomon in the 1970’s. If you remember watching Soul Train, you probably saw dance moves such as the robot, locking and popping.

Always know that you can improve and be open to all experiences. Have you ever gone to a dance before and stood there awkwardly because you do not know how to dance? Have you wanted to impress a person you had a crush on but dreaded looking awkward while you attempt to dance? Fear no more because you have come to the right place! With this simple tutorial and a little practice, you will gain the skills to impress those around you! It might even help you win over the person you have been admiring.

Growing up I always loved to go to the school dances because it was an exciting way to interact with all my friends and relax. However, when it came to the actual dancing part I never knew what to do. The dilemma of whether to just go for it and hope I do not look awkward or to just stand there and move my arms around was always raging in my head. I typically ended up just standing there and moving arms around because there was usually a girl I liked in my group and I did not want to embarrass myself.

Through a stroke of luck, around my freshman year of high school my older brother joined a hip hop dance team. Once he had been on the team for a few months I started going to him for advice on dance moves. Because of my brother I was able to, through perseverance and practice, become a decent enough dancer to not only start impressing those around me at the dances, but I even went and tried out for the hip hop dance team and eventually performed in front of my whole school.

Now that I have some years of experience in hip hop dancing, I would like to start sharing this talent with others and helping them feel comfortable to dance around others. For today’s tutorial I am going to start off with teaching a simple basic tutting move.

Things you will need:

1. Open Space: You are going to need ample room so you do not hit anything while dancing and hurt yourself. You can go outside to do this or even your living room will work.

2. Footgear: Make sure that you are wearing the appropriate shoes for your location] (ex: shoes on pavement).

3. Positive Attitude: It is always frustrating learning something new and you might not get it right away. Stay positive and know that you can do it!

Skilled hip hop dancers make complex movements and stunts look easy to execute. It’s as if they could do these moves with their eyes closed. However, practice, choreography, strength, flexibility and coordination are all needed to execute hip hop dance moves that seem to defy the laws of gravity. Add some pizzazz to your next hip hop show by creating your own stunts and the crowd will be left speechless.

Preparing Your Routine

Determine what type of routine you want to learn. Pick a theme, song, genre and perhaps a story to make your dance even more interesting. In hip hop, there are many different sub-categories of styles such as breakdancing, electric boogaloo, old school and new wave. Stick to a single style if you’re still learning or mix a few together to create your own original stunts.

Research hip hop choreography to find samples with a similar style to yours. See if there are any moves you don’t normally include in your routine and take notes on how to execute them. Inspire yourself with routines from well-known dancers, choreographers and teachers of your favorite style.

Create a routine that matches the song you picked by mixing in your favorite hip hop moves along with those you found inspiring during your research. Focus on making each move flow well into the other, matching the music and supporting your storyline. Include both leg and arm movements.

Ask other dancers to look at your routine to offer comments and ideas for improvement. Movements that may be fun to make as a dancer can look boring and simple to your audience. Have someone else critique your routine before finalizing it so you can gain a perspective similar to that of your intended audience.

Practice your routine until you know it by heart and don’t need to stop and think about your next move. Make sure each movement is well coordinated with the music and that your technique is perfect. Try dancing your routine without the music to make sure you know your counts well. Play with the timing of your song and practice your routine at slower and faster paces.

Learning Stunts

Do a freeze move when you want to insert a break point in your routine. Crouch with your right leg in front of the left. Bring your left elbow toward your inner right thigh and your right elbow into your right hip bone.

Place both hands onto the floor to your right, turn your head to the front and kick off your legs so your whole body is in the air, supported by your hands only. Try the freeze with one hand when you are more experienced.

Spin around on your head. Get into a handstand position and outstretch your legs in a V shape. Swing your hips and legs to help you rotate in small circles, while using your hands to guide you and give your spin some energy. Increase your speed and the number of full rotations gradually as you get used to this move.

Finish your routine with a suicide move. Jump in the air doing a forward flip and land on your back or shoulders. Swing your legs alternately to give you the momentum you need to do a full forward flip.

Practice the movement gradually before putting all your energy into it. Learn to land safely. Use your hands to help you land as you get used to the movement. When you get better at it, let your hands fall straight on either side of your body.

It’s all about attitude

Hip Hop dance is all about selling your performance and making people go wow. You should focus on every move that you do and you need to be very confident about every move that you do.

Learn the basics first

People try to learn the advanced moves because they think that the basic moves are very simple and they don’t need to learn them. If you master the basics with focused practice and try to give them as much time as possible then your dancing will be so much better. If you learn the basics really well, it makes it much easier for you to work on the intermediate and expert moves. So, rather than skipping the basics, work on them as much as you can.

Practice, practice, practice

People who are experts of Hip Hop dancing are experts because of their focused and regular practice routine. If you don’t practice you will not master the moves. The point is to practice whenever you are free. By doing this, the moves will get into your muscle memory and the muscles will move on their own.

All of the above will help you learn how to dance hip hop dance.

Alright guys, the next move we’re about to jump into is another basic hip hop move. It’s called the Two Step. Alright and once you get this move down, you’ll be able to use it with any style of music that comes on in any situation. So take a look at t first and then we’ll break it down step by step for you. Six, five, six, seven, eight. And five, six, five, six, seven, eight. Alright so let’s break it down step by step. Now the name is just how is sounds, it’s Two Steps.

So you’re going to start with your feet together and then you’re going to step out one with this foot. And then you’re going to step back in two with the other foot. Alright and different than a Step Touch, you’re not going to touch, you’re going to actually step it together. Stepping back out again, step, together, step, together, step, together and step, together. Alright. Now we’ve got the step down, we’re going to add the bounce into this.

So what I want you guys to do is start from a bent knee and every time you step you’re going to rock up, down, up, down, up, down, up and bounce it, up, up, and up, good. Now all I’m doing here is I’m just bending my torso forward, bending my knees slightly and bringing it up straight. Coming from down low to bouncing up. Alright so let’s try that bounce and we step side to side. Starting with your feet together, nice and slow, five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, again, and one, two, three, four, five, six, one more time, eight and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight, good. Now what you do with your hands.

There’s a couple of different things you can do with your hands with this move. Anything that feels comfortable for you guys to do is fine. I’m going to give you a couple different things to try it out. Number one, we’re going to have our hands opening and closing. Open and close. Now when you close them, you’re hands are going to cross but it doesn’t matter which hand you put on top. It’s up to you. Open, close, open, close, open, close, open and close. So let’s give that a try with the same two steps using that bounce up as we step. Five, six, seven, eight, we go open, close, open, close, open, close, open and close, keep it up. Open, close, open, close, just like that, one more time through, and open, close, open, close, open, close, open, close. Nice job guys.

So a couple of things to remember before we try it with music. Just remember your body position, you’re going to be bent over slightly and then you’re going to be rocking up with your body. So not down, you want to start from the low position and rock up. And remember that basic step, just stepping from the side together, side, together. Alright so let’s give it a shot with music, just have some fun with it, groove it out to the song, you hear the beat it goes one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, so you’ll step together, step together, step together. Just like that. Let’s give it a shot. Five, six, seven, eight and step. Good, keeping that bounce going with your body, nice guys, keep it up. Good, you got this basic in and out in a motion, keep that step going, try something different with your hands now, burry it up, hey, nice, you see what your mouth is doing, you can try that as well, Kyle and KC is doing the same thing, just give it a shot, make it your own, that’s the biggest thing. You can have your own personal style for you. Good, a couple more times, keep it going, and five, six, five, six, seven, eight.

Hip-hop is characterized by a high level of playfulness and exploration through “move-meant” concepts and techniques – that is, moves that hold meaning and value, informed by personal, social, cultural, and environmental experiences. Hip-hop dance does not use movement practices from modern, ballet, or Broadway- or Hollywood-style jazz dance. ACRO-DANCE

Acro-Dance is a fusion of artistic motion, technique of dance, and the athleticism of acrobatics. It is important to note that Acro-Dance is not the same as Gymnastics. There is much need to teach Acro skills differently than Gymnastic skills. Dance training is essential for Acro-Dance. In Gymnastics training, dance is secondary, but in Acro-Dance, skills are expected to seamlessly incorporated in dance. This is why we require students take either Ballet, Jazz or Modern in addition to Acro-Dance. This style of dance is performed on a hard floor without mats, (mats are used in training the skill, but to be performed without) while gymnasts have the advantage of a spring floor giving more cushion on landings and height for more complex tumbling. Due to the importance of flexibility for Acro-Dance, these classes will include strength and flexibility drills to allow our students to perform skills safely and correctly.

If you’ve been involved with the nightlife scene within the last 10 years, then I’m sure you know that hip-hop music is completely unavoidable!

The problem I hear about a lot of time though is that we want to be able to dance to hiphop music without “actin-a-foo” or coming off looking all “ghetto”.

On top of all this, you don’t want to learn any crazy choreography that you may have seen on T.V. because you know there are no way you would put it in to use in public.

Well, I’m guessing you’re reading this article because you can relate to this – or you just want to find out once and for all: how you should be dancing casually to hiphop music – you know, just have fun!

In this article I’m going to show you how you can do exactly that. I’m going to show you how you can get started quickly without doing any choreography. Also, you’ll learn how exactly you can start looking natural when those hiphop jams come on.

First thing we need to understand is that unlike electronics music, hip hop music nowadays usually consists of a slower tempo and heavier bass-ier beats.

As you may know already, hiphop dance is a specific style of dance – and it’s actually broken up in to a few different sub-styles.

The more “ol-school” style is also known as the New Jack Swing – check out a video of it here:

And then there’s the more new-school style kinda like this:

And then finally, the original style of hiphop dance: Breakdancing.

Don’t sweat, because you already know, the examples above are not really the type of dancing you see yourself doing out at social functions or weddings.

Okay, let’s dial it back to the basics,

A few things you need to first understand:

Number 1 – your focus should be LISTENING to the beat – in other words the BOOM BAP BOOM BAP of the beat.

Number 2 – The movements is likely to be BOUNCE based – meaning you would be focusing LESS on your footwork or lower body movements.

This is so because as mentioned, hip hop is more bass and heavy beat focused. Bounce based dance moves will sync much more easily to this kind of music.

Okay, and that is pretty much all. As you can tell, these movements are all very simple. With some practice you can begin to transition from one to the other. Whenever you DO get stuck, just make sure to focus on the beat of the music.

Hip-Hop includes many fun and fulfilling dance styles. With these, you are free to use all your energy, exercise your creativity, and express your mood. When you first start off, this can be difficult, as you’ll be focused on learning the basics, but over time you’ll get better and learn to adapt the traditional moves you’ve learned into your own style and personality.

As you get better and begin to branch out more, it’s important to recognize what is traditionally considered “Hip-Hop.” There are five elements that make up the original essence of Hip-Hop, and we’ve defined them below to help you on your journey.

B-boying

A street dance originating among Black youth in the United States, b-boying is also often referred to as breaking (and erroneously as breakdancing). After becoming popular in the US, b-boying spread to other countries, and continues to be danced worldwide. Distinctive traits of the dance style include floor-based movement, physically impressive techniques, syncopated rhythm, and lots of personality. Breaking itself also has 5 fundamental elements: toprock, foot work, back rock, freezes, and powermoves. However; as in any art form, there are other elements that make breaking what it is but these 5 are the core categories for different movements that are under the umbrella of b-boying.

MCing

MCing, short for Master of Ceremonies, got its name from Jamaica, which was the first place to give rappers the title of MC. In Hip-Hop culture, MCing is the most visible individual role. MCs are responsible for entertaining the crowd through the rhythmic delivery of rhymes, keeping in time with whatever music might be playing in the background and providing a canvas for the dancers to work with. As an art, it takes time to be comfortable with capturing the flow of rhymes and matching those words with the beat of the music. Usually at Hip-Hop events you will see a vibrant and energetic person with a mic who is guiding the event, this is the MC.

Graffiti

Graffiti is an artistic and visual expression of Hip-Hop culture. It was first found tagged on the streets of Philadelphia by a high school student who wanted to get the attention of a girl, and since then has grown to cover the outside of buildings, walls, buses, sidewalks, showcased in art galleries, and even the album covers of famous singers and rappers. As an art form, graffiti is much more than just tagging – it shows the expression of Hip-Hop culture that belongs to its listeners. Graffiti has had its run-ins with the law due to its nature of tagging, and due to this there has been debate over whether particular pieces would be considered street art or graffiti. There are many different forms and elements of graffiti itself:В tags, slaps, paste-ups, throw-up, blockbuster, wildstyle, heaven, and stencil. These are all different styles and mediums of graffiti and all have their own history of development and use.

DJing

Short for Disc Jockeying, DJing is the label given to those talented souls who are able to create new music using already recorded songs, music, sounds, etc. Now, DJing comes in many forms. Some DJs choose to make their mixes beforehand, selling them pre-made to their listeners, while others experience the art in the moment, creating new beats that can’t be found anywhere else. However; the original form of DJing was done to loop drum breaks of certain songs using turntables to make the “break”В last longer than a few 8-counts. This changed music in a drastic way because it layed the foundational looped drum beats that b-boys break to and MCs rap to. Like the other four elements of Hip-Hop, DJing is an intensely creative process that results in innovation not only in music but in the culture of Hip-Hop as a whole.

BeatBoxing:

One of the spiritual foundational elements of Hip-Hop, BeatBoxing has the ability to set the tone when it comes to Hip-Hop music. Typically, a beatboxer will create a repeating beat, using their mouth to create sounds that will be then accompanied by a rapper. In this way, beatboxing sets the scene for important Hip-Hop events like rap battles, transforming the mouth and body of the beatboxer into an instrument. Just as breaking has pulled from other cultures as sources of inspiration (ex: Capoeira) beatboxing has its own inspirations from other forms of vocal percussion (ex:В scatting, pulled from Jazz music).

While professional beatboxers make it look easy, it’s not. Lots of practice is necessary to give beatboxer the right sound, along with special techniques for breathing to more efficiently use breath pauses for increased endurance and stamina. Beatboxing, like every other form of Hip-Hop has changed and evolved overtime, with new techniques, new sounds, and group-beatboxing all now commonly seen. There are even competitions and battles all over the world.

Overview

While these five elements of Hip-Hop don’t always intersect with Hip-Hop dance, they are all integral parts of Hip-Hop culture. At the end of the day, Hip-Hop dance is born from the love of Hip-Hop music and the need for self expression. That’s why, as a dancer, it’s important and useful to understand the five elements of Hip-Hop and pay homage to how they arose and created a new culture which helps so many people worldwide.
