How to deal with temptation

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

God will never allow any challenge you cannot carry. Hence, I will be teaching on ‘Dealing with Temptation’. Stay with me to learn from God’s Word in this teaching series.

What is Temptation?

Temptation is a desire to engage in short-term urges for enjoyment that threatens long-term goals. It is an attraction, either from outside oneself or within, to act contrary to right reason and the commandments of God.

Jesus, during His life on earth, was tempted by satan (Matthew 4:3-11). Temptation primarily connotes a trial in which man has a free choice of being faithful or unfaithful to God. Everyone deals with temptation, but if we yield to them, then we fall into sin.

The process of temptation and sin is taught in James 1:13-15. Temptation does not come from God; it comes when we are drawn away in our own lusts.

This means that each person will be tempted in different ways at different times. What is not a struggle for me can be a cause of sin for someone else. Therefore, we should be sensitive to others and not participate in activities that could cause others to sin.

The verses go on to say that when lust has been allowed to mature, it brings sin and ultimately death. We do not have to be slaves to the temptations of the devil. Focusing our lives and minds around the Word of God will equip us fight temptation.

Why Does God Permit Temptation?

Temptations are not to mar you as a Christian. Just as we saw in the case of Jesus in Matthew 4:1-11, His ability to win over the devil granted Him the ability to win over the temptations brought His way by the Pharisees and his eventual triumph over the cross.

The Bible clearly stated in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that, No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Temptations comes as a stimulant for growth, each temptation you overcome increases your spiritual stamina as a Christian. Therefore do not be anxious when faced with temptations; rather, build yourself up in the most holy faith praying in the Holy Ghost just as admonished in Jude1:20.

The Holy Spirit enables you overcome any temptation like Jesus, and this will be your testimony in Jesus name!

Remember, you cannot have access to the Holy Spirit if you do not have access to Jesus. However, you must accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour to live an overcomer’s life.

Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts He any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death (James 1:12-15)

What is sin?

Sin is disobedience to the words and will of God and obedience to the words and will of the devil . In the previous post ‘ to sin or not to sin, that’s the decision ‘, Jesus commanded to sin no more. Therefore, you have been given power to rule over sin and resist temptation that will lead to sin.

How to deal with temptation

Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him (James 1:12).

Everyone, including you, will be tempted in life. Your job is to resist temptation and don’t give in. When you resist temptation and stay obedient to the words of God, you will receive the crown of life.

Jesus promised the crown of life to those, who love Him. This means, that the crown of life will be given to those, who will keep and do His commandments and say ‘no’ to temptation and ‘no’ to sin.

You will be tempted because you have an enemy; the devil, who will always try to get you back into his kingdom.

The only way to get you back into his kingdom is if you listen to his words and obey his words and your flesh that strives against the Spirit, and sin.

Man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death (James 1:13-15).

The devil will always tempt you and will always try to get you back into your old former habits and your old former life, which was full of sin. It all starts with the lust of the flesh. When lust is conceived, it produces sin and sin produces death.

How to deal with temptation?

How to deal with temptation? Well, it is important to recognize in your life how lust enters and avoid that. That way you won’t be tempted and be led into temptation. Is it that simple to deal with temptation? Yes, it is that simple, if you really want to get rid of sin and want to remove sin out of your life. Because if you still love your sins, then you won’t be able to get rid of it.

When you say with your mouth: “ I don’t want to do this ”, but in your heart, you think: “ I like it, I don’t want to give this up ”, then it will be impossible to get rid of it.

People can pray for you over and over again to break the power of your sins, but the enemy will always try and try and will never give up. Therefore you are the only one, who can stop it. You are the one, who can resist lust and resist temptation. There is no one else, who can do it for you.

Don’t fulfill the lust of the flesh, but fulfill the will of God

The way to avoid temptation is to keep walking after the Spirit. Because when you walk after the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts of your flesh. Therefore seek those things which are above and not those things which are upon this earth. Get your eyes off of yourself and get your eyes on Jesus Christ.

Build yourself up in your most holy faith. Speak in tongues, fast, pray. Feed your mind and renew your mind with the Word of God and resist temptation and kill the deeds of the flesh.
