Discover how to create neat, consistent brochure spreads using InDesign.
Sometimes it can be difficult to keep your body copy in order when using just one baseline grid. You might have a range of point sizes for quotes and side notes to use in a spread that will need to be aligned differently, for example. There are many different options for getting round this with InDesign CC, I find one particularly effective method is to work with text frame grids, which enable you to have multiple baselines in your layout.
In this tutorial, I will explain how frame grids can work for you, along with a handful of other useful InDesign features, such as the Balance Ragged Lines tool and page numbering. These will help your layouts look neat and consistent.
01. Create a new document
To start, create a new A4 document in InDesign (File > New > Document). Check the Facing Pages box and enter 4mm in the Gutter options. Then set the Margins to Top: 11mm, Bottom: 11mm, Inside: 15mm (so we don’t lose anything in the gutters when binding), and put the Outside at 11mm.
02. Set up your margins and columns
Select the A-Master in the Pages panel to set up your margins and columns. To do this, go to Layout > Margins and Columns and enter how many you need. In this project, I’ve used nine columns, which should give enough diversity when designing each spread.
03. Set your page numbering
In the Master Pages, set your page numbering by creating a text box in the area where the number is needed. Go to Type > Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number. You should then see the letter ‘A’ appear in that area. When you go back to your pages, the numbers will appear. Add any other assets needed, such as headers, on this page.
04. Set up your grid
Set up your baseline grid. Go to the InDesign menu and select Preferences > Grids. For this particular project, my grid starts at the top of the margin and the leading is set at 5mm.
05. Create ‘horizontal zones’
Now create some horizontal zones that you think could work well with your nine columns. Usually you would do this at the beginning of your project when you set your margins, but I find doing it at this stage gives some flexibility when I’m considering where to place a piece of information or an image. I’ve indicated these areas in grey. To mark them, drag a ruler guide and use the X and Y fields for a little more accuracy.
06. Choose a font
Now you can start styling up your layout, so choose a font. A good font won’t need too much kerning, so for this project I’m using two: Brandon Grotesque for headings and subheadings, and Vectora Light and Roman for body copy. Aside from the headings and subheadings, I’ve used placeholder text (cmd/ctrl + right-click) and select ‘Fill with Placeholder Text’). In your Paragraph panel, click ‘Align to baseline grid’.
07. Style your headings
I’ve chosen an underline to style my headings. You can alter the style, weight and offset the line by going to the Character panel and selecting Underline Options. I’ve set the Weight at 1pt and kept the colour the same.
08. Neaten paragraphs
To neaten paragraphs, you can use the Balance Ragged Lines feature in the Paragraph panel. This balances out paragraphs that end with shorter lines, similar to ‘Justify all’.
09. Set text frame for captions
Captions are often much smaller in point size and leading value, so having another grid to snap to will keep these consistent. To create a text frame grid, select the text box, then cmd/ctrl + right-click and select Text Frame Options, and tick Custom Baseline Grid. I have input a grid at 3.5mm, aligned to the top margin, and selected a different colour to make them easier to see.
It’s also worth noting that you can achieve a similar effect by aligning the text to the document baseline grid, and selecting the ‘Only align to first line grid’ option in the Paragraph panel.
10. Use the Rectangle tool
To keep within the overlapping theme of the spread, use the Rectangle tool to draw a shape that fully or partially covers an image, then choose a colour and fill it. Select Colour in the Transparency Effects palette (Window > Effects). If the image runs off to the edge of the layout, make sure you fill your bleed area.
11. Prepare your files for print
Once you’ve styled up all your spreads, you can prepare them for print. Check and double-check that you have the correct bleed for any images, and make sure they are all CMYK. All body copy should be proofread and any spelling corrected before the document is ready.

To make a product in Photoshop, you can not do without skills. You will have to spend time learning the functionality and capabilities of the program. Creating printing products in Word does not require special knowledge.
It is best to make brochures in a clean document. This will get rid of further problems with the placement of text, charts, and other elements of your post on the page that Word users often encounter. There are many tools for adding content to the Word menu: you can insert text, images, compose tables, diagrams, additional design elements. An easier way is to make a Word template based on a ready-made template that can be downloaded from the official Microsoft website.
How to design a brochure in photoshop?
You need to understand that to create a brochure in Photoshop, you need to study all its abilities well. It is more difficult than creating in Word, but at a more professional level.
Brochure design ideas are an individual matter. All components of the design are determined either by taste or by technical specifications. Earlier, when creating a template, you need to provide an indent from the cutting line. This is to ensure that when you cut a paper document, no white areas remain around the perimeter. The background should go exactly to the lines that define this indentation. All created graphic elements must be depicted using shapes, since a highlighted area filled with color on paper may have ragged edges. When working on the design of the brochure, do not confuse the information blocks: the front is on the right, the second is the back, the third block will be the first that the reader will see when opening the booklet. On the first page of the business brochure design, it is better to place information that most reflects the main idea of your brochure. On the following pages, you can already write in more detail what you are doing, and the information inside the brochure depending on the focus, have both an advertising and a general nature.
How to design a brochure in illustrator?
The creative skill of a great illustrator knows no bounds. It can help you conjure up wonderful things. However, not everyone is familiar with its fundamental mechanics, which can turn the simple process of creating a brochure into a quandary. In this way, the brochure is created according to a template. You need to click on File, from the context menu and select New from templates (Shift + Ctrl + N). Then let’s start filling our brochure. You can place a text file (preferably in the .txt “notepad” format). Adjust the text box to fit the columns (required to leave 3-5 mm from the borders of the columns). Then let’s start working on the design of the brochure. First, fill in the inside of the brochure and set the background for this. After inserting, the picture will cover the text. To move it under the text, right-click on it and add transparency. So when you have decided on the background, you can place additional illustrations.

What are the technical specifications of Video Brochure design?
When you decide to order your Video Brochure, Video Business cards or Video Mailers, one of the first steps is to design the paper cover. There are several options to choose from and many available customization.
First, decide on the screen size.
The size of the screen will determine the minimal size of the paper cover as well as the screen cutout. While we can supply a larger brochure with a smaller screen, we cannot deliver a brochure with screens reaching exactly the brochure borders. Review the specs at this page.
What is the size of the brochure itself?
While a custom cover with unusual shapes is possible, most of our orders follow pre-established sizes that fit the electronic parts. The table below highlights the minimum size of our brochures for each screen size.
What are the orientation options?
Our Video Brochures come in either a horizontal opening (opening to the left) or a vertical opening (opening to the top). Portrait orientation also has a horizontal opening to the left. Custom options available.
What are the cover options?
Our brochures come in a softcover or hardcover. Our pricing is based on the default softcover. The price difference between the softcover and hardcover is between $2 – $7 (depending on quantity and brochure size). The paper stock is either matte or gloss.
What are the options for buttons and controls?
During the design phase, it is important to establish what controls the brochure has. Most brochures are triggered by a magnetic switch embedded to the brochure lid. Some clients choose to start the brochure with a button.
Most Video Brochures can accommodate up to 12 buttons. More buttons may require expanding the size of the brochure (and increases the price).

Scribus is an open source desktop publishing software that runs on Linux. It has a lot of the same features of InDesign, and it’s free. Unfortunately, there isn’t much content online on how to use Scribus, so save some time to test and learn it before using it on a professional project. Scribus is also available for Windows and MacOS.

Canva is the perfect solution to make a brochure if you are not a professional designer. The software offers many templates (some free some not) from which you can start to make your brochure. During the editing, you can select or purchase images, icons, etc.
Quark XPress is probably your best alternative to InDesign. In the 90s, XPress had a 95% market share. It wasn’t until InDesign arrived in early 2000 that they lost their prominence.
Quark has caught up with the lack of features that made them lose their monopoly, and now they are back to business with a fully improved 2018 version.
Affinity Publisher is the new entrants that wants to out-throne InDesign. The software looks really nice and functions in a very smooth way, but during my test this summer I found that many features were still missing. At the time of this article, it is offered for free in a public beta.
If you already have a subscription to Office 365, Microsoft Publisher would surely be a better choice than using Word.
Adobe Spark works similarly to Canva, but I found Canva much simpler to use.
LucidPress is a publishing app that works on the browser. You can drag and drop elements, change text, etc.
If you are on a Mac and are looking for a cheap option, Swift Publisher can be a good solution. The software doesn’t have the features of a professional tool but for simple, amateur projects, it could be a decent choice.
Tools to use only if you have no choice
Microsoft Word and Apple Pages
Word and Pages are word-processors. They are not focused on graphic choices as much as on text. For that reason, they won’t give you complete control over the layout of your document. Picture placement in Word and Pages is a nightmare. You won’t be able to create a professional looking document as you would with InDesign.
Software You Should Avoid
Illustrator, Inkscape, and Affinity Designer
These three software programs are very powerful, but they are for vector graphic design, illustrations, and logo design. You can, of course, bend them to your needs and create a brochure with one of them, but for better results, it would be a much better choice to pick one of their partners (InDesign, Scribus, Affinity Publisher) that focus on DTP.

Design is a critical capability that sets every luxury brand (and luxury property brochure) apart. Luxury may look simple on initial inspection, but as any designer will tell you, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication… and the hardest to achieve.
Brochures designed for luxury homes or apartments require a certain restraint in terms of design. Luxury brands stand strong, tweaking their logo, or typeface only occasionally. Like great oak trees, they grow and develop slowly over time. Consistency is the hallmark of a truly great luxury brand.
Luxury property brochures (in fact all brochures that we design) use a carefully selected range of typefaces. When we design luxury property brochures, we think more about how the font will look in print (of course), but also pay homage to the time-tested font selections of many of the world’s greatest luxury brands.
Serif fonts are the most commonly used fonts for luxury marketing, simply because they tend to look, and read better in print, and generally, because they tend to be older, they convey a sense of timelessness for a brand. Where newer online brands lean towards sans-serif fonts due to the readability of these cleaner, more streamlined typefaces on a computer screen – luxury brands lean more towards classic typefaces. That is not to say that luxury must always have a serif typeface, the times are changing and so too must the typeface – but simplicity and classiness are always at the heart of luxury typography.
Sticking to 2 or maybe 3 fonts will ensure the luxury brochure maintains it’s elegance, simplicity and of course, remains on-brand. Many property developers have brand guidelines in place that the brochure will align with.
As a rule when you design luxury property brochures, colours must be kept under control. Monochrome (black/white/greyscale), or simple 2-3 colour palettes will ensure the finished brochure is both stylish and oozing the luxury feel you need.
Paper selection can really set a brochure apart and convey the sense of luxury needed for your property. A great brand shortens the sales cycle, and keeps customers coming back for more. Every aspect of the customer experience is refined and perfected, delivering the quality and vale that buyers expect.

We are going to take a look at brochure design and see what is involved. A brochure is typically a folded piece of paper that can have anywhere from 1 – 4 folds. The most common is a single fold and a tri-fold. A single fold gives 2 panels (front and back) where a tri-fold gives 3 panels on both sides, although it only had 2 folds.

1. Setting up the page
There is no one size for a brochure, so for this project, we are going to use one half of a letter size page for each panel. From (File > New) under Name: type Brochure. For Preset Destination, select Default RGB. If this will be sent to an offset printer, then you would select Default CMYK. From the size drop-down select Half Letter and under Number of pages select 4. Click OK. The final step of the document set-up is to go to (Layout > Page Layout) and select Facing Pages and under Start on, select Left Side Start. Click OK once again.
2. Adding Content
Adding content is very straight forward. One suggestion would be to get a couple of pieces of letter size paper and fold them to resemble your brochure. Now rough sketch what you want on each of the panels, before actually adding the content in CorelDRAW. Once you have done this exercise, you will be pleased at how smooth the laying out the brochure will be.
3. Outputting the file
To easily output the brochure, we are going to use something called the imposition layout tool. From (File > Print Preview), now in the toolbox on the left side, select the Imposition Layout Tool. Next, from the Property bar under the first drop down, select Booklet. You will notice that you can now see that pages 4 & 1 will print on one side and if you select Layout Template (Back) tab at the bottom of the screen you will see that pages 2 & 3 will be printed on the other side. The final step is to click on the gear icon (Print Options) on the Standard toolbar. This will allow you to select the proper printer and set it for double-sided printing.

Design the cover. The cover needs to be attention grabbing. Present the reader with her biggest benefit for opening the brochure and reading further. While you want to show your company name, it shouldn’t be the main focus of the page. Place it at the bottom of the page and consider leaving the company logo for the back page.
Design the inside flaps. There will be two inside squares that the reader will see before he opens the brochure completely. These portions should include pertinent information and pictures. You are still working on getting the reader to open the brochure completely, so don’t be too long-winded on these pages. Keep information in bullet-point form. Continue to highlight benefits.
Design the inside. This is where you can go into a bit more detail about what you have to offer. Use the entire surface as one page, don’t break it down into the individual squares. Still keep in mind that a brochure isn’t a place to be word-happy and be careful not to write a short novel. Use the inside to include larger images, charts and graphs if you need them. Also include contact information in this area.
Design the back portion. This portion can include final information that didn’t have a place elsewhere. It is the least important side but it is, nonetheless, important to have something there. The back pages are a great place to have your company logo and include your contact information again. You can also include a small map with directions to your location.

5. The template will have temporary words as guidelines. Double click the boxes to edit.
6. To change the font size and style, go to the right pane of the window, in the toolbar choose Paragraph Styles. Edit and click anywhere outside the box to accept the changes.
7. In inserting photos, click the photo you wish to replace, delete it and replace it with your chosen photo. To delete, press Delete in your keyboard and Ctrl + V to paste the copied picture from the web. To choose photos from the library, in the menu bar, File > Place or Ctrl D. It will open to your library. You may Place or simply drag and drop. Resize accordingly.
8. Change the rest of the text boxes and images. Continue to repeat the process until you complete your project.
9. Once your brochure is done, double check your work if everything is in place. Look for some error, check the spelling and grammar and make sure that margins and spacing are enough.
10. To print, simply go to File > Print. It will open a window of Print options. TIP: check the printer if it has the type of paper you have worked on. Tick Print.
11. Go to your printer, get the printed sheet and reinsert it into your printer. Repeat process with the rest of your copies. TIP: do some test pages printing to minimize error.
12. Fold the brochure in half lengthwise. One paper should have 4 pages.
