The long-term effects of detox include increased energy, heightened immune system, more self-confidence, overall feeling of well-being, and lowered risk of health issues. When your body is free of the waste, it can finally savour the goodness and nutrients you are feeding it.”

You can either eliminate the excess weight and toxins by going on a juice cleanse or detox diet that will most likely send you back to your old habits once they’re over, or slowly and steadily incorporating simple detox habits into your regular routine.

“Do not go full-on and eat like a supermodel when you have been a fast food junkie. One week’s worth of motivation is not going to turn 10 years of bad eating habits around. You will feel more discouraged upon not seeing results from a yo-yo diet,” Alessia cautions. “Change progressively and not drastically. Set aside a weekend, it’s time for spring cleaning — more accurately, spring cleansing –even though it is already summer. Perfect for the procrastinators among us.

Spring cleansing means detoxifying your body, says Linda Page, ND, PhD, a naturopathic doctor, lecturer, and author of the book Detoxification.

It’s a way to recharge, rejuvenate, and renew, says Page. “Anybody can benefit from a cleansing. The body is coming out of what might be called hibernation. It’s a way you can jump-start your body for a more active life, a healthier life.”

There’s no vacuum or mop needed for this little “housekeeping” ritual. It means drinking juice — a whole lot of juice and little else — which pushes everything thing else out of your system, Page tells WebMD. You get the picture. You’re clearing out all the tubes and pipes, as they say.

But to purists like Chris Strychacz, PhD, a research psychologist at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, Calif., fasting means “water only,” he tells WebMD. He’s been fasting for at least 25 years now, an annual weeklong ritual every spring.

“There’s a big difference between fasting and dieting [as Page advocates],” Strychacz says. The effects on the body are quit different, he says.

Strychacz vividly remembers his first fast — 17 days long. “It was extraordinary, a mystical experience. I felt like I’d figured out why Jesus and Plato and Socrates and Gandhi did it — the clarity of thought, the peacefulness.”

Fasting indeed has a long-standing spiritual tradition. “Almost every religion has some type of fasting ritual — Lent, Ramadan, Yom Kippur . the Hindus and Buddhists fast, too,” says James Dillard, MD, assistant clinical professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He’s author of Alternative Medicinefor Dummies.

“There’s definitely a spiritual factor,” Dillard tells WebMD. But he’s among the skeptics. “Whether [fasting diets] have any physiological benefit, I’m not so sure.”

A study of anthropology gives plenty of evidence, Page says. In Chinese medicine, fasting is part of preventive health care. For many ancient cultures, fasting helped people “lighten up” after a long winter, shed the extra winter fat layer that provided warmth.

If you feel “congested” from too much food — or the wrong kinds of food — you may want to detoxify, she says. If your energy level is low, if you have been taking many medications that have not been eliminated from your system, a weekend detox may help you feel better.

While a “water only” fast is pretty straightforward, Page’s cleansing is a bit more involved.

The diet starts on Friday night with a green salad, but Saturday’s menu shows you what’s really in store: Breakfast starts with plenty of vitamin C, then take your choice of fruit juices. “Because of its high water content, fruit will flush you through much quicker,” she says. “Green things give energy, but sugars will wash the system easier.”

“You’re going to be drinking something every 90 minutes to two hours, so you won’t feel deprived or hungry,” Page tells WebMD. “As your body gets lighter and lighter through the weekend, you can feel what’s going on. You’re getting rid of toxins accumulated during the winter. Your body is starting to release fat, those extra pounds.”

Dinner? That’s miso soup with some chopped sea vegetables (like the Japanese nori, used to make sushi) snipped over top. Or you might choose a cup of brown rice with a few chopped vegetables mixed in. “Brown rice gives your body plenty of B vitamins, which is a stress reducer. It’s very high fiber, will fill you up, will help you sleep, and will flush you out in the morning.”

She also advocates “cleansing boosters,” including herbal laxatives, colonics, probiotics (that replenish healthy bacteria), and antioxidants. Relaxation techniques — massage therapy, sauna, aromatherapy baths, deep breathing exercises, walking — help round-out the cleanse.

In evaluating Page’s detox diet, Dillard says, “Certainly, the human body carries huge loads of petrochemicals. We know people usually die with the full burden of PCBs they’ve ever been exposed to — from fish, animals — stuck in their liver. DDT sticks around, too.”


But can fasting remove these? “Theoretically, yes,” he says. “When fat is mobilized, anything that is fat-soluble should be mobilized, too — should, that is,” Dillard tells WebMD.

Although there are no studies of juice fasts/diets, water fasting does have some scientific evidence behind it — “but very scant,” admits Strychacz.

In the book Triumph Over Disease, Jack Goldstein, DPM, outlines his true story in overcoming ulcerative colitis by sticking to strict water fasting and a vegetarian diet. Goldstein is one of very few people who has tested his own tongue scrapings, urine, feces, even perspiration during a water fast, Strychacz says. “He found that the contents [during a fast] are different than normal — that toxins like DDT do get removed.”

Strychacz would like to conduct a study of fasting’s effects on atherosclerosis. “Look at Dean Ornish’s low-fat diet. He claims not only to arrest but actually reverse atherosclerosis. That’s huge. I would argue that if a low-fat diet will reverse it, then what about a no-fat diet?”

Some still consider fasting — in any form — to be “out there.” “When I review diets that are not based on science, the question I ask myself is: Would I feed them to my family? In this case, the answer is a clear no,” says Susan Roberts, PhD, chief of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging and a professor of nutrition at Tufts University in Boston.

But the psychological or spiritual effect can’t be discounted, says Dillard. “People love the idea of cleansing, of purification rituals, going to the Ganges, to the spa. It has powerful psychological, religious, spiritual meaning. That has its own positive effect on health. But we need to separate that from saying this is science or good medicine.”

Just don’t look at water fasts or juice diets as a weight-loss solution. As with the Atkins diet, restricting carbohydrates causes you to lose weight — but you’ll gain it all back, says Dillard. “You’re losing water in your system.”

Juice diets do prevent your body from going into a state called ketosis, he says. Ketosis means your body has no carbohydrates to burn for energy, so it has to burn stored fat or whatever else is available, he tells WebMD. “You feel bad, even smell bad. That’s what makes you feel like hell during a [water-only] fast. But is that because the toxins are coming out? No! You’re going into ketosis. It’s known physiology.”


“There’s nothing wrong with going on a juice fast for a few days,” he says. “But it’s not a great way to lose weight, because you’ll gain it all back — you yo-yo. It’s just like the Atkins diet. The weight you lose is water weight.”

Eating less — that’s definitely known to extend life, Dillard says. “The only reliable way to extend the lifespan of a mammal is under-nutrition without malnutrition. Studies show that if you cut back on 60% of the calories mice eat, they will live almost twice as long with much fewer tumors.”

“The old-fashioned way of eating the right foods, getting exercise, clean living, keeping a positive mental attitude — that’s what works,” he says.

While there is no such thing as a one-day miracle fix for overindulging, it can help to hit the reset button every once in a while — giving you a little push towards feeling better stat and making healthier long-term decisions.

3. Clean up your diet.

Here, we’re going to give you an example of what you can consume on the diet to detoxify your body. Remember that you can eat pieces of fruit, mixed salads, nuts, natural yogurt, or vegetables with hummus between meals.

Detox can play an important role in your Candida treatment. Starting your Candida diet with a detox will help to ‘clean out’ your intestines, weakening the Candida biofilms and expelling large quantities of the Candida yeast and its toxic byproducts.

During this first phase of the plan, you can eat mostly salads, vegetables, and perhaps some eggs for protein. Each person is different, and this can be adjusted to fit your own particular situation. Detox And Candida

Fixing your diet is one of the most important parts of beating a intestinal pathogen like Candida, and restoring your gut to perfect health. In practice, that means following a slightly more strict version of the regular Candida diet. This phase of your treatment should only last for a few days.

The most basic principal of a good cleansing detox is that you shouldn’t force your digestive system to work too hard. That’s why I recommend eating mostly salads and vegetables throughout your detox. Healthy, nutritious foods that allow your digestive system and detox pathways to kick back, take it easy, and begin the recovery process.

Some people choose to implement a stricter detox, for example a fast or a fully liquid diet. That’s not really necessary, and you may in fact be making it harder on yourself by following such a strict detox. For most Candida sufferers, simply cutting out the hard-to-digest foods is a more appropriate method. In our Candida treatment plan, Dr Eric Wood and I recommend following this detox for anywhere from 3 to 7 days.

Supplements To Help With Your Detox

Food can be a good detoxifier if you know what to eat. For a start, sulfur-rich foods like garlic, eggs, poultry, onions, fish, legumes, and beans can help. Sulfur protects the body cells from toxicity and helps build bile. You may need medical advice on how much sulfur to add to your diet. The reason for this is that the amounts required will often vary depending on the level of toxicity.

Also, drinking lemon water all through the day could help reduce the body’s alkalinity. This will quicken the detox process by unbinding minerals. Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and collard plants can also help as they supply the body with natural and easily absorbed minerals needed for detoxification.


Fiber can also come in handy to detox from arsenic. You can get fiber from foods. Fiber-rich food of around 25–35 mg per day is ideal. This is good for detox because toxins attach to the fiber and are eliminated as waste. Fruits and veggies are excellent sources of fiber. Unfortunately all that excess-in the form of carbs, fat, salt, sugar, and alcohol-can leave you feeling bloated, tired, hungry, and guilty. So come your first day back to work, give your body what it’s craving to help reestablish a healthy equilibrium.

This four-day plan is filled with nourishing foods high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients to offset whatever happened over the weekend. It’s not a free pass to go whole-hog on days off, but it will help lessen the impact when you’ve overdone it.

Every Day

Fluids are key since extra salt, sugar, and alcohol can dehydrate your body. Start the day with a tall glass of water or warm cup of any type of tea, then drink throughout the day, aiming for 64 to 100 ounces to flush out the pollutants from the weekend.

Plan to eat three meals, with lunch four hours after breakfast and dinner between 6 and 7. Focus on nutrient-dense foods that are low in calories but high in vitamins and minerals since weekend fare tends to be the opposite: high-calorie and low-nutrient.

High-water, high-fiber fruits such as berries, grapefruit, pears, cantaloupe, olives, and avocado will help clean out your gut and get your digestive system back on course, while dairy contains B vitamins, calcium, and vitamin D, all of which you likely skimped on over the weekend. The best options are kefir, plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and butter, and organic is the very best. At meals, fill your plate with one-quarter protein, one-quarter fruit, and half non-starchy vegetables.

There’s limited research behind many of these claims and most are dangerous — especially if followed for a prolonged period of time. The purpose of our organs like the skin, kidneys, intestines, liver and lymphatic system are to naturally detoxify your body. As such, there’s no need to drop lots of dough on potentially dangerous cleanses, pills or teas.

    I recently had a conversation with friend who does a popular detox plan. He claimed (as many of my clients do), that he wasn’t sure it really detoxed his body but it was more of a mental and psychological overhaul for him. It’s a way to gain control of what you eat and perhaps even gain control over other aspects of your life. If you feel the need to detox, then do so safely. Here are three suggestions:

    When’s the last time you cleaned out your fridge, freezer and pantry? Take a few hours to go through your inventory and keep a running list of healthy essentials to stock up on. Toss expired foods and donate foods you tend to mindlessly indulge in (get them out of the house!).

    Instead of running into the store and choosing your usual items, start shopping smarter. This means preparing a shopping list based on healthy recipes and snacks. Oftentimes stores send out circulars with weekly sale items—save money by finding recipes that include those items. For example, if plain nonfat Greek yogurt is on sale then make a smoothie for breakfast one morning and snack on Greek yogurt topped with granola or fresh fruit another day. Smart shopping can help you make budget-friendly healthier choices!

    A healthy diet and weight loss plan includes all food groups including whole grains, fruit, veggies, dairy, healthy fats and lean protein. However, some folks wish to eliminate not-so-healthy choices as a way to detoxify. If you choose to do so, here is a list to choose from:

    • Caffeine
    • Alcohol
    • Added sugars

    Most folks can’t go cold turkey forever—and once you fall off the wagon, you’ll feel bad about yourself.     Fasting also lets the organs rest a little bit and recover from being stressed from having to digest toxic foods. A water fast is a good way to detox your body by hydrating the body and flushing toxins out of the bloodstream and kidneys.

    Drink purified water when possible. Pubic water is treated with chemicals that are toxic to us, and also unwanted chemicals get into the water supply and contaminate our bodies.

    2. Detox your body by drinking three quarters to a gallon of water a day. Drinking water helps to flush the kidneys of toxins so that kidneys can more efficiently excrete the toxins out of the body through the urine. The Institute of Medicine recommends men drink approximately 3.7 liters and women drink approximately 2.7 liters of total water from all beverages and foods a day.

    3. Eat whole foods, foods without chemical additives and preservatives in them to detox your body. Additives and preservatives helps to change the composition os natural foods and preserve them from breaking down at their natural rate.

    These unnatural changes disrupt the natural balance between food and the body and these toxic changes attack the tissues of the brain, heart, liver, kidneys, skin, and intestines.

    Detox your body by eating natural whole foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, and grains which contain a lot of fiber to clean the digestive tract, and regulate the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream. The nutrients in these foods also exist in a synergistic way that help the body get the most out of them.

    4. Remove factory farmed meat and dairy from the diet to detox your body. Factory farmed animals are raised in horrible conditions that promote disease.     And the foods that he promotes to eat are: Green Leafy vegetables, Cold water fish (like Salmon and Tuna), Free range pasture Chicken, Fresh Berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries), Apple cider vinegar, Water with lemon, Herbal teas, Unsweetened coconut milk, Coconut Oil, Plant-based protein powder.

    This plan is used as a diet program to promote weight loss, the weight loss is a result of the bacteria balance in the gut, by eliminating certain foods that feed bad bacteria in the intestines, which increases the amount of good bacteria, resulting in weight loss.

    What sets this program aside from all the other detoxing programs out there is that it actually a food program that promotes weight loss. Most of the other plans involve consuming very little food as a way to rid the body of harmful toxins.

    The Mold Detox Diet. About 1,300 million years ago, long before humans ran the earth, fungi were the frontrunners of existence. They have survived millions and millions of years before us and will always have the upper hand – they can evolve faster than we can and therefore will always outlive us.
