Step 1 – Check the Gaskets

Like most appliances, dishwashers have a rubber gasket around the inside edge of the door which helps to keep the water and soap inside. If this gasket is torn or cracked due to age, this could be the source of your leak.

To check the gasket, start by visually inspecting it for any tears. If you do not see any, take a piece of notebook or newspaper and insert it at the top portion of the door along the side. Then close the door on the paper and try to gently pull the paper out of the door. Open the door and move the paper to the next space and do this all along both sides of the dishwasher. A dishwasher should have enough of a seal to make pulling the paper out difficult, so if it slides out easily, you need to replace the gasket.

Step 2 – Check the Hoses

A dishwasher leak can also be caused by one of the hoses attached to it. To get access to them, you’ll need to remove the kick plate, thus exposing electrical controls and wiring.

Caution—Before removing any protective covers from the dishwasher and exposing the electrical area, always turn off the power at the breaker.

Then locate the screws holding the kickplate in place and remove it. You can then see the inlet solenoid valve right in the front with the fill hose attached to it. Run your hand or fingers along the hose feeling for water. Use a flashlight or trouble light and shine it underneath to spot where the water is on the floor, or where it’s dripping from, especially at the inlet valve’s connection point.

There is also a larger hose for the drainage connected to the dishwasher, but this one usually coming from the back of the unit. If it’s not easily accessible, you will have to remove some screws fastening the top part of it to the cabinet. Pull out the dishwasher revealing the drain hose. Then feel and look for wet spots. Look near the connection points and also on the floor directly under where the connection points are normally located. If the hoses are leaking at a connection point, the clamp may have simply come loose. If this is the case, simply tighten the clamp. If there is moisture on the hose itself, see if you can feel for a crack or hole. Damage to either of these hoses will mean immediate replacement.

Step 3 – Check the Water Inlet Valve

This is also a good time to check the water inlet valve. This valve is the connection the hoses are attached to and could be leaking. If you see or feel the water around it that is not coming from the hoses, you will need to replace the valve. A dishwasher leak from the water inlet valve can be dangerous due to the wires that are also attached to the solenoid valve. If the inlet valve is the source of the problem, do not use the dishwasher until it has been repaired.

Step 4 – Check the Water Level

If the tub on your dishwasher gets too full, it can also cause a dishwasher leak. To check the tub level, turn the dishwasher on and let it fill. Once you hear the water shut off, open the door. The water level should be just below the lower edge of the door. If it is any higher, check the dishwasher for clogs which may be preventing water from properly draining.

While these aren’t the only malfunctions your dishwasher can have that may lead to leaks, these are some of the most common. If you’ve checked all of these places and still can’t locate your leak, it may be time to call in professional help.

Not Washing

But, how do you test that motor out without making a serious mess?

Before you even think of testing anything, check to see if your dishwasher posts an error code relating to the pump motor. If not, check for symptoms of a bad pump motor. If you still need more evidence of a bad motor, use a hook volt multimeter to read the resistance of the motor. A good motor will only have 30 to 40 ohms of resistance.

Trying to manually test a dishwasher pump motor is not always necessary if you know what else you can look for. This guide will help you troubleshoot that dishwasher and hopefully figure out your next steps.

Before You Begin: Is It Your Dishwasher Drain Pump Motor?

Testing your drain pump motor will involve physically taking out the drain pump, which is not exactly something you want to do unless it’s necessary. You can usually tell if your drain pump motor is the problem through other means, thankfully. If you notice these issues, you probably have a bad pump to blame:

  • Your dishwasher is draining slowly. This isn’t always a clear-cut sign, this is a good indicator that you might have a drain pump issue. To check this, run your dishwasher and see if water pooled at the bottom of the washer. If you notice a large puddle there, you probably have a pump motor problem.
  • When your dishwasher is draining, you hear a high-pitched whining noise.The whining noise tends to be the sound of a dying motor or a jammed pump.
  • The error code that your washer keeps showing says “DP.” DP stands for “drain pump,” which means that the display that shows this is pretty certain it has something to do with your drain pump.
  • When you’re running cycles that involve draining away water, you start hearing strange noises. Not all pump motors will make a loud whine, even though that is the most common noise it’ll make. Some motors will make a loud, vibrating buzz when the drain isn’t working. Others may make even stranger noises.
  • There’s water pooling at the bottom of your washer. Do you open up the washer door, only to find some murky water at the bottom? You might have a bad pump motor to blame.

Can You DIY A Drain Pump Motor Test?

For the most part, testing your drain pump motor shouldn’t be a big issue. As long as you have the right tools for the job, the testing itself is fairly straightforward. This is appropriate for people who have beginner to intermediate DIY skills, and can hopefully save you some money in the process.

The better news is that you can also replace a drain pump motor on your own in most cases. So if you want to save money on calling a repairman, you absolutely can. There’s usually no reason to call one if your pump motor is the issue.

How To Test Your Pump Motor

To test your pump motor, you will need a voltmeter that can read resistance as well as a couple of tools to remove your dishwasher’s drain pump motor. We also strongly suggest getting a user’s manual to make sure that you are doing things right. To start your testing, follow these steps:

  1. Do an empty wash run to see if there’s a strange sound coming from the drain pump. If you don’t know where the drain pump is, listen closer to the bottom of your dishwasher.
  2. Turn off your washer and open up the door. You are going to need to access your washing machine’s drain pump.
  3. Refer to your dishwasher’s owner’s manual to determine how you should remove your pump motor. In most dishwashers, this will include accessing the pump through the sump at the bottom of your dishwasher, near where the small black wire barriers are. To remove it, you will most likely have to twist it and lift upwards. Even so, it’s best to double-check.
  4. Clean the area in and around the pump motor. If you have a clogged pump or just a bad drainage issue, this can help make things better. It also can help you figure out whether or not there are
  5. If your pump motor is dirty, take a disinfecting wipe and clean it out. This can help ensure that you get a good reading from your meter. It also can help your motor run smoother if it tests out to be good.
  6. Examine the drain pump motor. This isn’t really “testing” per se, but it still will help you diagnose what is going on. If you notice broken pieces or something that is clearly wrong with it, you already know it’s gone bad.
  7. Clear out the drain pump’s plumbing. This will prevent you from misdiagnosing things, and also will help improve how well your washer runs. If your drain pump is working well, cleaning out the plumbing is going to be the fastest way to make sure that you get
  8. Take your volt multimeter and use it to test the resistance. A good drain pump motor will only give 30 to 40ohms of resistance. If it has more or less, then it’s bad.

What Should You Do If Your Drain Pump Motor Has Gone Bad?

Unfortunately, a drain pump motor that’s gone bad can only be fixed via replacement. If yours went bad, you are going to have to get a drain motor pump that is made specifically for your dishwasher make and model and replace the one that you currently have. You should not use a dishwasher that has a bad drain motor pump.

How Much Does A Replacement Drain Pump Motor Cost?

The cost of a replacement drain pump motor will depend on the type of dishwasher that you get. On average, a drain pump motor will be between $30 to $220 for a full replacement in a non-commercial unit. If you choose to get a professional to replace it, you will also need to factor in a labor fee that will be between $50 to $120 on average.

  • A defective pump: The function of the pump is to circulate and help drain water from the dishwasher. It sits at the bottom of the machine and consists of two compartments—one for the wash cycle and one for draining. Over time, age and detergents can dry out the rubber gasket that seals the pump to the bottom of the tub, causing a leak. Seals don’t last forever, so replacing them is a good way to give your dishwasher new life.
  • Old door gasket seal: If water is leaking around the front of the dishwasher, there’s most likely a problem with the soft vinyl or rubber seal that goes around the opening of the dishwasher to create a watertight seal. If the seal is old, it might have become brittle and unable to seal properly. The door latch could also be the issue if it’s not secure.
  • Damaged water inlet valve: As the valve that feeds water from the home’s main water line into the dishwasher, this is a common source of leaks. If the supply connection is not secure or the hose that connects to the dishwasher is cracked, that could be your problem.

My Dishwasher Isn’t Filling With Water

Well, there can actually be a few reasons as to why this problem might occur.

Cause 1: Twisted Or Blocked Supply Hose

You can initially start by checking the supply hose, and if you find that it has been twisted or blocked in any way then you can fix the issue. On the other hand, It may be that the fault lies in the dishwasher – or it could be a problem with the water supply itself.

Cause 2: The Water Supply

To find out if it is a problem with the water supply, a good way to check is to turn the supply off at the tap and then disconnect the inlet hose from the back of the dishwasher. If you then grab a bucket and turn the supply back on, then try to fill the bucket with water from the hose.

If the flow of water is quite fast, or if it’s what you would normally expect to be coming from your tap, then that would indicate that the supply is ok and that the problem lies in the dishwasher. If this is the case then the next place to have a look at is the solenoid valve at the back.

Cause 3: The Solenoid Valve

To get to the solenoid valve you will need to remove the side panel. You can now use a multimeter to test the valve itself as to whether it’s working or not.

Start by removing the connections from the valve, and then grab your multimeter – putting it onto a medium to high resistance setting – before placing the probes of the meter onto the terminals of the valve.

For a working valve you’re looking for a reading somewhere between 2,000 and 5,000 ohms, and on this one, I’m getting about 4,000 so that shows that it’s OK. Obviously, if you get readings that are significantly outside those figures then you should replace the valve.

Once the water comes through the solenoid valve on some machines, it goes through a flow meter, and on this particular dishwasher it comes up through this hose, then through the air break (or heat exchanger) – then down through this hose into the sump at the bottom of the dishwasher.

The water is then on some models monitored by a pressure switch.

Cause 4: The Pressure Switch

Now to show you the pressure switch we need to have a look at the other side of the dishwasher. The pressure switch is connected to the sump through a thin pipe.

As the water comes into the sump it forces air along the tube into the pressure switch – and the pressure switch then takes a reading of how much air is coming into it.

From this reading, it can determine how much water is in the sump, however, if a blockage forms in this pipe the air isn’t going to be forced through it properly and the switch isn’t going to take a proper reading.

As a result of this happening the dishwasher is going to overfill and flood with water. If that’s what is happening with your dishwasher, just have a look at this pipe here.

If you suspect there might be a blockage you can actually just remove the pipe from the switch, and blow into it to clear any blockages that might be in there. Now, this dishwasher has an additional pressure switch here, and this monitors the flow of water from the wash pump.

If your dishwasher has two pressure switches, and you’re in doubt as to which one is monitoring the sump, you can just blow into both to be sure.

Cause 5: Dispenser Problems

The dispenser has two functions, one is to release the detergent and the other is to release rinse aid. A couple of minutes into the cycle the dispenser will open, making a very distinctive thumping noise as it releases the detergent.

Also during the final rinse cycle, you may hear a very slight buzzing noise as the rinse aid is released into the dishwasher.

Running a Test Cycle

Bosch dishwashers have a test cycle which can be run as a troubleshooting measure. The method to run this test cycle is similar across the Bosch dishwasher range so if your dishwasher features seems different from those described below then try experimenting, as the process is fairly straight forward and will be very similar. Bosch dishwasher model numbers are usually found around the top or lip of the door.

One of the most common differences between dishwasher models is simply the names of the buttons. For example in the first example below, POWER SCRUB PLUS and REGULAR WASH may be called WASH and ECO depending on your dishwasher model and the country you are in. The other key difference is whether your dishwasher has a display panel (which can display error codes) or not (in which case a program light will illuminate to tell you the fault.

To run the test cycle hold down the POWER SCRUB PLUS and REGULAR WASH buttons. Whilst held down press the ON/OFF button. The lights above them should flash. Now you can check the status of each dishwasher program by pressing its button. Now you can run the full test cycle = Press the POWER SCRUB PLUS and REGULAR WASH buttons again. The dishwasher will start up and when the cycle has ended one, if you have no display panel on your dishwasher model the indicator lights will illuminate if a malfunction was detected as follows –

CLEAN – A temperature sensor fault. If this is the case then the test cycle will be very short as the dishwasher will terminate the test once it’s been detected.

RINSE/DRY – A water sensor/filling fault. If this is the problem then the test cycle will not complete as the dishwasher cannot detect the right level of water, the dishwasher will just keep filling and draining again.

WASH – A heating fault. Check your heating element.

If you do have a display panel on your Bosch dishwasher then after the cycle is complete an error code will be shown if a fault has been detected. The error codes are as follows –

0 – No errors have been detected.
1 – A water sensor/filling fault.
2 – A heating fault.
4 – A water filling fault. This can also appear as F on the display during a normal cycle.
8 – A temperature sensor fault.

How to diagnose dishwasher problems

A dishwasher that fails to drain correctly is tricky to diagnose because there are lots of possible reasons for the problem, and some don’t even involve the dishwasher. Sometimes, it involves issues with the plumbing itself that need to be addressed before you turn to repairing or replacing the dishwasher.

Before you begin troubleshooting, remember that it is normal for some dishwashers to retain a small amount of water at the bottom of the tub after a complete cycle. If you have just a small pool in your machine, check the owner’s manual (or call the manufacturer) to see if this is normal.

How to Diagnose Plumbing-Related Causes

Surprisingly often, drain problems with a dishwasher originate in drain parts outside the appliance itself. Not all the following steps will need to be completed. Continue until you determine the cause of the dishwasher’s drainage problems. If none of these plumbing-related issues seem to be at fault, then proceed to the diagnosing issues with the dishwasher itself.

Check the Garbage Disposal

In most cases, the dishwasher drain hose connects to the disposal. When there is food built up inside the disposal or when the disposal is clogged, there is less space for the dishwasher water to flow. Run the disposer thoroughly with plenty of water running to clear it out. This may fix the drainage problem with the dishwasher.

Clean the Air Gap

This is the small (usually chrome) cylinder on the back edge of the kitchen sink. It prevents air vacuums from forming and thus prevents drain water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. If water comes out of the air gap when you run the dishwasher (and sometimes that water winds up all over the counter), the blockage is between the air gap and the garbage disposer.

To clear it, remove the air gap cap and clean the inside the air gap. Next, disconnect the hose that runs from the nipple on the bottom of the air gap to the garbage disposal or the sink drain, and make sure that it is not clogged.

Check the High-Loop

If your dishwasher doesn’t have an air gap, its drain hose may be looped up and attached to the bottom of the countertop near the sink. Although this is not code-compliant in most places, it serves the same purpose as the air gap—to prevent drain water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. If this hose has come loose so it is no longer looped up higher than the level of the dishwasher, it may prevent water from properly draining out of the appliance. Returning the hose to its proper high-loop position will fix the problem; or, you can install a proper air gap.

If you’ve just installed a new garbage disposal, make sure the plug inside the drain hose nipple has been knocked out. New disposals have a little plastic disc covering the drain opening, which must be punched out with a hammer and screwdriver; unless you do, the dishwasher cannot drain into the disposal. The disc falls into the disposer’s grinding chamber, where you can fish it out.

How to Diagnose Appliance-Related Causes

If there are no obvious plumbing-related causes, drainage problems may originate with several possible components on the appliance itself.

Check the Drain Screen

Check the drain screen at the bottom of the dishwasher tub and make sure nothing is clogging it. Clear plastic lids, glass, labels, and bits of plastic can cover the drain, and they can be hard to see unless you look closely.

Clean the Filter

Dishwashers use a variety of filter designs. Some have a simple screen, some have removable filters below the screen, and some require removing the bottom spray arm for a thorough cleaning. Check the appliance manual for instructions on how yours should be cleaned.

Check the Dishwasher Drain Hose

This is usually a corrugated plastic tube that runs from the bottom of the dishwasher to the air gap, garbage disposal, or sink drain, depending on the setup.

Turn off the power to the dishwasher by pulling out its plug or switching off the breaker to the dishwasher circuit. Remove the toe-kick panel, then loosen the hose clamp securing the drain hose to the dishwasher pump (have a sponge handy for any water that spills out).

Clean the end of the hose, then blow into it. If the hose is plugged and you can’t blow through it, remove the clamp on the other end of the hose, then clean the hose out in a sink. If you can’t unclog the hose, or if it is old and cracked, replace it.

Replace the Dishwasher

Appliance repair specialists can be expensive, and if your dishwasher is more than nine or 10 years old and none of the obvious fixes remedies the drainage problem, it may be time to replace the dishwasher. This is not as hard as it sounds, and many homeowners do this work themselves. Some appliance stores will install the dishwasher free of charge as part of the purchase price and they may even handle the disposal of the old appliance.

When to Call a Professional

If you have a newer dishwasher that isn’t anywhere close to old enough for replacement, you will likely want to figure out how to fix the current one. Solution = You need to check the drain hose and ensure that it is installed correctly. If the drain hose is lower than the dishwasher base, then put it at least 10 inches above the base. Also, ensure that the drain hose is not bent or cracked. You should replace the broken dishwasher.

GE Dishwasher – Error, Fault or Function Codes

Fault codes were always for the technicians, just as they are to car mechanics, as being a service aid, not a replacement for the technician’s diagnostic skills. The fault code comes up when the appliance encounters some form of error that it can detect, often a blinking series of lights or a code displayed in the LCD or LED display indicates the nature of the fault, what it does not do generally is pinpoint the actual failure or the failed component that has caused the alarm.

Problems

The pump out during drain has exceeded 2 minutes.

Clean the air gap. Replace or reposition the hose. Run the disposer to clean it out. If problem persists, contact service.

The total pump out cycle exceeds 7 minutes.

Press RESET to stop the beep.

Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker for about 30 seconds and then reset the dishwasher. If the problem persists, contact service.

Touch start and then cancel/reset. Tap on the float cover to un-stick the float. This is the plastic cover that looks like an upside down cup in the front left corner of the floor of the dishwasher. Also, check the the sump area in the back bottom of the tub for debris. It looks like an upside down silverware basket and can become clogged.

The pump out time is too short.

Make sure that the water supply is turned on. Try the same cycle again. Tap on the float cover to un-stick the float. This is the plastic cover that looks like an upside down cup in the front left corner of the floor of the dishwasher.

Water temperature coming into the dishwasher should be at least 120 degrees F. Run the faucet adjacent to the dishwasher prior to starting the dishwasher to purge any cold water from the line. Adjust the water heater temperature. Don’t use the washing machine or take showers when using the dishwasher. Use options on the dishwasher to cause the machine to run longer and thus add more heat.

Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker for about 30 seconds and then reset the dishwasher.

This display indicates that the detergent cup is blocked from opening fully.

Remove obstruction (i.e. silverware, pan). Relatch door & wait 30 seconds for cup to open.

PF code

Indicates that there has been a power failure to dishwasher.

Simply select the desired cycle and options, press the Start pad and the dishwasher will function normally.

Cup Open

The detergent cup has not been closed. It’s a reminder to add detergent and latch the cup closed.

When the problem occurs, the cycle will not start, but you can override by pressing the start pad again without opening the door.
