How to disable facebook chat

You know what’s cool? Instant messaging with friends, family, and colleagues. You know what’s annoying? Having their face float above everything else on your phone. And that’s exactly how it is with Facebook Messenger—here’s how to turn off the floating face icons on Android.

The feature itself is called “Chat Heads,” and it seems like a good idea—hell, some people may even like them. That’s cool! We like that you like them. But if you find yourself in the “con’t like it” camp and just want to get rid of them, we have you covered. There are two ways you can go about this: if you just want to temporarily get rid of the heads floating around on your screen, you can dismiss them. But if you never want to see another Chat Head as long as you live, then you can completely disable them.

Let’s start with the latter, because it just makes sense.

How to Disable Facebook Messenger’s Chat Heads

You’ll disable Chat Heads from the main Messenger window. You can get there by just opening the Messenger app or by tapping any open Chat Head (which takes you to Messenger).

How to disable facebook chatHow to disable facebook chat

In the Messenger app, see that little icon with your own pretty face up in the upper right corner? Tap that.

How to disable facebook chat

Scroll down until you see the “Chat Heads” entry, and then toggle that little slider off. Now, you can live that Chat Head-free life.

How to Dismiss Chat Heads

If all you’re looking to do is get rid of the Heads that are currently hanging around, no worries—that’s easy. Just grab it and sling it down to the X at the bottom. Like so:

Poof! It’s gone—at least until the next time that persons sends you a message.

How do I disable Facebook chat availability? My chat is offline and I am using Windows 7 with Firefox. When I login with my other account through my mobile Facebook and open a chat conversation I see the account that I use on my computer is active “just now” whenever I move the mouse or refresh the page.

How do I disable that? Is there some specific heartbeat message that is possible to be blocked through AdBlock Plus or something?

3 Answers 3

Okay I have found the solution to block this status.

Basically Facebook uses a timer and so it will send a heartbeat message to their servers with the idle time every x minutes.

Here is an example of such web request:

If you read that link you’ll see that &idle=117 is the total seconds the account has been idle for. The state=offline stands for whether the chat is active or offline

Note that I have replaced my userid which is a number of 15 digits.

So to disable this just add the following rule in your AdBlock filters:

One drawback of this method is that you will not receive messages in real time. You must refresh the page to get the messages.

Since I’m providing additional details, I’m writing my own answer based on the original (instead of editing it).

Yes, there is a way to do this, but this method works only for the web-based Facebook and Messenger; you can’t do something similar for the mobile apps.

Basically, Facebook uses timed requests on the server side to check if the client is still available. So the front end (loaded Facebook web page) will periodically send an HTTP request (XHR) with the idle time to their servers.

Here’s an example of such request:

Note: I’ve replaced the user ID which normally would be a number.

If you read the URL above, you’ll see the part saying idle=117. This denotes the total number of seconds the account has been idle for. The state=offline stands for whether the chat is turned on or off.

So, to disable this, just add the following rule to your ad blocker’s custom list of filters:

To disable on both, Facebook and Messenger, you can add the following two lines:

Or the single line, using regex:

A few drawbacks of this method are that you’ll not be able to receive messages in real time and you’ll not appear online even if the chat is on. You’ll have to refresh the page to receive new messages.

In order to avoid both of these drawbacks, here’s one workaround. You can add this line instead:

Or, add this for both, Facebook and Messenger:

The end result of this will be the following:

  1. When your chat is off, you’ll not appear online, your last activity won’t be reported, and you won’t be able to receive messages in real time.
  2. When your chat is on, you will appear online, your last activity will be reported, and you’ll be able to receive messages in real time.

“Mark, there’s someone who keeps bugging me on Facebook Messenger. Every time he sees me online, he messages about the most trivial things and it makes me less productive at work. The thing is, I can’t really block him because he’s an office-mate. He doesn’t know it but he has become a real source of stress for me. It used to be really easy to disable chat for one person on Messenger but now, I can’t seem to find that option. Is that feature still available or Facebook altogether removed it? “

That’s the question that one of my female cousins asked me after we had our big family dinner last night.

I told her, “Well, yeah, that can be such a drag. And I agree, it used to be very easy to turn off chat for specific Facebook friends. Now, it’s a bit more complicated to do but the option is still there. You just need to know where to find it. “

If you also have the same problem as my cousin and you’re now at wits’ end looking for a way to disable chat with one or two noisy friends on Facebook, here’s how you do it:

1. Click on the Settings or Cog icon at the bottom of your Messenger chat box as shown below.

2. Click on “Turn Off Active Status” option.

3. Doing so will launch the “Active Status” window shown in the image below.

4. In the pop-out window, tick on the circle beside “Turn off active status for only some contacts. “

5. In the box below that, type in the Facebook name of the friend that you no longer want to chat with. As you type, Facebook will automatically show you active users in your chat box. Just click on the account you want to turn off chat for. If you want to do it for multiple users, simply separate their names with a comma.

Once you’re done, simply click the “Okay” button.

Popular chat apps like Messenger allow us to communicate with friends and family across iOS and Android phones alike. However, that interconnectivity doesn’t mean both apps are the same. While Facebook has made strides to close gaps between these two platforms, chat heads remain an exclusive feature for Android devices, and they let you keep Messenger threads close by.

Chat heads are circular profile icons that overlay other content on the screen when you receive a new message on Messenger. Tap on one, and you can read the full conversation in a pop-up, as well as respond, without leaving any app you’re currently in. They remain available even after sending a reply, so you can quickly return to the chat without having to open Messenger. You can dismiss chat heads whenever you want, but they will return when you receive a new message.

How to disable facebook chat

Chat heads weren’t always an Android-only feature. When first unveiled, Facebook offered chat heads on iOS, but with a caveat. While chat heads work system-wide on Android, an iPhone user had to stay in the Facebook app for them to appear. This was likely due to restrictions from Apple, and in-app chat heads made no sense inside Messenger where all chats ended up. With those two thoughts in mind, we’re unlikely to see chat heads make their way back to iOS anytime soon.

Enabling or disabling chat heads is simple on Android. First, tap the profile icon in the top left to open the Settings menu. Next, locate “Chat Heads,” then tap the slider to either enable or disable the feature. If you have any chat heads currently open, they will disappear if you disable the option here.

How to disable facebook chat How to disable facebook chat

That’s all there is to it. You can return to this settings page whenever you need to if you want to toggle on or off chat heads once again.

If you enabled them, when chat heads appear as overlays on your screen, tap on them to open up the overlay window with your conversation, where you can reply. When multiple chats happen, they are bundled on the same overlay icon, so tap that to choose which one you want to view. Anything else is fair game in this window, so you can add media and attachments to messages, change chat settings, make a call, view all of your chats, start a brand new chat, add to your story, and so on.

You can dismiss chat heads on the screen at any time by dragging the profile icon to the bottom of the display. Drag it over the (x) that appears on-screen and let go, and your chat heads will disappear. At least until you receive a new notification.

Who really needs another messaging app?

How to disable facebook chat

Published Jul 21, 2017 Updated May 22, 2021, 11:13 pm CDT

As convenient as Facebook Messenger can be for private messages and phone calls, sometimes we could all use a break from the constant pings and notifications. It’s possible to check your Facebook messages without Messenger, but it’s really more of a hassle than it’s worth. Instead of deleting the app altogether, which may leave you scrambling to recover deleted messages on Facebook Messenger, it’s better to just sign off for a while and catch your breath. Here are two simple ways to turn off Facebook Messenger.

How to turn off Facebook Messenger

The most straightforward way to turn off Facebook Messenger is to do via the Facebook app.

How to disable facebook chat

Tap the menu icon on the right-hand side of the Facebook app and scroll down until you see App Settings. Once you are in your settings, scroll to the bottom and turn the Facebook chat toggle off.

How to disable facebook chat

Even though you are turning Facebook chat off on your mobile device, you will still receive messages, just without the continuous notifications.

How to mute conversations in Facebook Messenger

Sometimes group chats can just be too much, especially if they are filled with every one of your family members. The dread of receiving another ping about a topic you don’t care to read about can weigh you down, but you don’t want to leave the chat and offend anyone.

Luckily, you can mute conversations on Facebook Messenger so you won’t receive notifications until you open the app.

Tap the conversation you want to mute and press the information button in the top-right corner. Select mute.

How to log out out of Facebook Messenger

If you need more of a break, you can always log out of Facebook Messenger. Users who are active on the Messenger app have a small green circle that appears in the bottom-right corner of their bubble. Setting your profile to inactive will show people that you are not available on the app.

How to disable facebook chat

At the bottom of the messages section in the app, tap the menu icon next to “Home.”

How to disable facebook chat

Tap Active at the top of the menu. This will give you the option to turn chat off.

How to disable facebook chat

Even though you set yourself as “not active,” you will still receive messages, as well as the notification reminder on the app. If you want to avoid notifications and the option to receive messages on your mobile device, it’s best to delete the Messenger app or turn notifications off.

Facebook recently rolled out a change that now displays your “chat” menu across the right side of your screen. While lots of folks like the change, many don’t. This very brief tutorial will show you how to ‘hide’ that menu and revert to the previous style.

Note: the Facebook Chat Sidebar/menu will re-appear when you initiate a chat with one of your friends on Facebook. Repeat steps #2 and 3 to hide it again. Keep an eye on FB Purity updates – I expect they will create a much more elegant approach to reverting to the previous Facebook Chat layout.

The image below illustrates the ‘new’ Facebook Chat sidebar.

How to disable facebook chat

To (temporarily) disable this sidebar, scroll to the bottom of your screen and locate the “cog” icon (see image below) and click it.

Select Hide Sidebar from the list of options.

How to disable facebook chat

Now your “Chat menu” will revert to its previous state – at the bottom of your screen in a much more unobtrusive location.

  • That’s it, you’re done! Do remember – when you click the “chat” box now at the bottom of your screen, the entire Chat Sidebar will re-appear. This isn’t a permanent solution, it’s just one that will remove the Chat Sidebar for your general Facebook surfing.

A step-by-step guide to deactivating Messenger as well as your Facebook profile

    How to disable facebook chat

It used to be that deactivating your Facebook account also automatically deactivates your Facebook Messenger, but that is no longer the case nowadays. You can still use Messenger even if you deactivated your Facebook profile, so your friends can still chat or call you, but they won’t be able to see your profile.

Deactivating your Facebook account is different from deleting it. When you deactivate your Facebook account, your profile and personal information still exist, only that they’re hidden from public view. You can reactivate your Facebook account anytime you want by simply logging in using your email and password.

What if you want to totally deactivate your Facebook account along with Messenger? It’s still possible to deactivate Messenger so that your friends can no longer send you messages. Of course, if you want to go back to using Messenger, you can just log in through the Messenger app and it will instantly be reactivated.

To deactivate Messenger, you must first deactivate your Facebook profile. There’s no way to deactivate Messenger without deactivating your Facebook profile first. If you don’t want to receive messages without deactivating Facebook, you can just remove the Messenger app.

How to Deactivate Your Facebook Profile

Here’s how to deactivate your Facebook profile.

On the Facebook app, tap the hamburger menu icon on the rightmost portion of the screen and then scroll down and tap “Settings & Privacy.” Select “Settings.”

Scroll down and choose “Account Ownership and Control.” It’s under the section called “Your Facebook Information.”

    Select “Deactivation and Deletion.”

You’ll be given two choices, whether to deactivate or delete your Facebook account. Choose “Deactivate Account” and press “Continue to Account Deactivation.”

Enter your password in the provided field and tap “Continue.”

Choose a reason for deactivating your Facebook account and click “Continue.”

You can change the number of days to reactivate your account, or if you want to do it manually, choose “Don’t reactivate automatically” in the dropdown field. Tap “Continue.”

In the final step before deactivation, you’ll be given some options like whether to opt out of receiving future notifications. If you have any groups or apps where you are the sole administrator, you will be asked to either delete them or transfer their ownership. If you have a page where you are the sole administrator, it will be unpublished.

Tap “Deactivate My Account” to proceed with account deactivation.

Your Facebook account has now been deactivated, but your friends can still send you messages. To reactivate your account, just log back in using your email or mobile number and password.

Now that your Facebook profile has been deactivated, you can proceed to the next step which is to deactivate Messenger.

    How to Deactivate Messenger

On the Messenger app, tap your profile photo on the top-left portion of the screen.

Scroll down and select “Legal & Policies.”

    Choose “Deactivate Messenger.”

Enter your password and click “Continue.”

    Finally, tap “Deactivate.”

Facebook Messenger is now deactivated and your friends can no longer send you messages in existing conversations. To reactivate your Messenger, just log in again. If you reactivate your Facebook profile by logging in through the app or the web browser, your Messenger will also be reactivated. Take note that if you reactivate your Messenger, your Facebook profile will also be reactivated, so you may have to deactivate your profile for a second time.

You’ve just learned how to deactivate Messenger as well as your Facebook profile. Since Messenger will remain active despite deactivating your Facebook profile, you will have to deactivate it separately. It’s an extra step but as you can see, it’s really easy to do. If you don’t want to permanently delete your Facebook account, you can deactivate it instead to disappear temporarily from the social network.

    It’s easier than you think.

It’s the 2017 version of butt dialing—accidentally placing a call to a friend through Facebook Messenger. And to make matters worse, the calls placed with Facebook Messenger use your cell phone plan’s data if you’re not connected to WiFi.

But luckily, there’s a way to stop it.

Disabling the ability to make video and voice calls through the desktop version of Facebook Messenger is pretty straightforward. On the chat panel on the right-hand side of the screen, users can click the gear icon to bring up the options menu. There, you can select “Turn Off Video/Voice Calls.”

People can also select a specific length of time to turn the feature off or leave if it off indefinitely.

Unfortunately, preventing your phone from randomly calling your significant other, or some random Facebook friend, isn’t a one-step solution that will turn off the feature. But, there is a way to prevent the problem. Go into your Facebook messenger app’s settings in “System Preferences” on an iOS device and remove the microphone permissions. If the phone icon is pressed, the app will ask for permission to access the microphone rather than placing the call.

This will also prevent people from taking a video with sound directly through the Messenger app as well, which could potentially save you from an awkward conversation about why you called a friend from the grocery store.

And if you decide you want to video chat with a Facebook friend or call them though the app, it’s simple to turn the microphone permissions back on—using the same method to disable the feature.

When you want to be available to chat with certain friends but not others, these quick steps can help you out.

Facebook’s messaging system can sometimes be more distracting than useful. The ability for everyone you have as a friend to contact you in a real-time chat can eat a large chunk of your time each day (depending on the number of friends, of course). Instead of allowing everyone to talk to you at their whim, why not just enable chat for the people you would actually want to have real-time conversations with?

Luckily Facebook has options to turn off chat for everyone except those you select, or simply turn it off for people who contact you too often. Here’s how to set it up:

Step 1: Open your Facebook account in a Web browser. It’s easiest to do it from your computer, but you can also load the desktop version of the site from a mobile device.

    Screenshot by Nicole Cozma/CNET

Step 2: Open the chat area at the bottom-right corner of the page, then click the Settings cog and select Advanced Settings.

    Screenshot by Nicole Cozma/CNET

Step 3: Choose the type of chat status you want to use and fill in the names of the people. This is quick and easy; just start typing a name and Facebook will autocomplete it for you.

Now you can enjoy a little extra peace when your Facebook tab is open. What do you think of these options? Share them with us in the comments.

Facebook killed their M chat bot a few months back because it was more artificially stupid than artificially intelligent. Unfortunately, it lives on as the equally unintelligent M Suggestions in Facebook Messenger. Here’s how to turn those off.

    What is Facebook M?

Facebook M was a virtual assistant chat bot that actually used humans to do most things. Facebook’s plan was to use the humans to train the chat bot, and then phase out how much the humans had to do. This didn’t work.

A lot of noise was made in the press about Facebook M, but it was only ever available to around 2,000 Californians. The human end of things could never really scale to more.

At the start of this year, Facebook pulled the plug on M as an independent chat bot. Instead, it lives on in M Suggestions based off what they learned from working with the chat bot. It doesn’t, however, seem like they’ve learned that much.

M Suggestions pop up based on the context of your conversations. It can do things like:

    • Suggest some appropriate stickers for a reply.
    • Pay or request money.
    • Share your location.
    • Help you make plans.
    • Start a poll so you can get a group of people to decide what to do.
    • Hail an Uber or Lyft.

How to disable facebook chatHow to disable facebook chat

If these sound like kind of things you can quickly and easily do with, say, an app or by using your words, you’d be right. I’ve found that M Suggestions are at best, irrelevant. At worst, they’re actively in the way, and I often tap them by mistake.

How to Turn Off Facebook M Suggestions

To turn off Facebook M Suggestions, open Facebook Messenger, and then tap your profile icon. On iOS, it’s at the top left of the screen; on Android it’s at the top right.

    How to disable facebook chat

Scroll down and select the “M Settings” category.

    How to disable facebook chat

To get rid of M suggestions, just turn the “Suggestions” toggle off.

And just like that, M will annoy you no more. If it ever does start being actually useful, you can always turn it back on.

Getting too many Facebook messages is fun for some people, but a nuisance for others. If you’re in the latter category, you might be wondering if there’s a way to deactivate Messenger.

Unfortunately, the only way to deactivate Messenger is to first deactivate your entire Facebook account. But there are a few alternatives you can take advantage of too, like disabling Messenger instead.

Here’s how to do them all.

How to deactivate Messenger by deactivating Facebook

Although they’re separate apps now, Messenger is still heavily connected to Facebook. They use the same account, and settings you change in one app often carry over to the other app. This is why deactivating Facebook also gives you the option to deactivate Messenger.

To deactivate on your iPhone or Android.

    1. Open the Facebook app and tap the three stacked lines in the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (Android).

    2. Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then select Settings.

    3. Tap Personal and Account Information, then Account Ownership and Control, and then Deactivation and Deletion.

    4. On the page that opens, select Deactivate Account — or, if you want to go all the way, Delete Account — and then Continue to Account Deactivation.

    5. Enter your Facebook password and confirm that you want to deactivate your account.

This will log you out and deactivate Facebook. Now, to deactivate Messenger:

    1. Open the Messenger app and tap your profile picture in the top-left corner.

    2. Scroll down to tap Legal & Policies, and then Deactivate Messenger.

    3. Tap Deactivate again to confirm your choice.

If you ever want to reactivate your accounts, just open the app and log back in.

    How to disable Messenger

An easier method is to disable your “Active Status” on Messenger. This will make it look like you’re always offline, which will discourage people from messaging you.

    1. Open the Messenger app and tap your profile picture in the top-left corner.

    2. Select Active Status, and then toggle off Show when you’re active.

Alternatively, you can just delete the Messenger app off of your phone. You’ll still receive messages this way, but you won’t get any notifications for them on your phone.

Back when Facebook launched the revamped groups, many of us (TNW included) were pretty excited. Though the initial fervor has died down somewhat, Groups are still going strong and continue to annoy people who haven’t been able to use their Facebook chat since the introduction.

However, in response to a massive user push (and apparently a thread on Quora), Facebook has given us the ability to opt out of Group Chat just by going to your Edit Settings button on a group’s page. So, instead of being a blanket response to all of your groups, you’re able to control who you get chats from and who you don’t.

So here’s your two-step process, just in case you can’t find what we’re referring to:

    How to disable facebook chat

Why you should delete Facebook Messenger

Is Facebook Messenger private? Not really. Facebook Messenger holds exactly the same personal data as Facebook, and it can linger even after you’ve deactivated your Facebook account. Here are some more reasons why you should delete Facebook Messenger:

    • Facebook experienced massive data leaks and breaches in the past, so your data is clearly not safe with it;
    • Facebook profits from the harvesting of user data and the Cambridge Analytica scandal have crushed Facebook’s stock price and left users fearing for their privacy;
    • Facebook Messenger is not private. It ranks poorly in our secure messaging app list because it tracks your behavior, lacks a default encryption option, and doesn’t encrypt your past conversations. Moreover, it has access to your camera, microphone, and contacts;
    • Messenger’s source code is not open for independent review, and its security design is not properly documented;
    • There are also tons of more privacy-centric instant messaging apps available.

    How to deactivate Messenger

Now we will explain how to deactivate Messenger. Deactivating Messenger is simple. However, if your Messenger account is connected to your Facebook account, you will have to deactivate your Facebook account first.

The following Messenger deactivation steps apply to both the iOS and Android platforms:

    1. Open Messenger;

    2. Click on your profile in the top left corner;

    3. Tap Legal & Policies;

    4. Choose Deactivate Messenger;

    5. Tap Deactivate to confirm your choice.

To reactivate Facebook Messenger, log in with your username and password.

Deactivating your Facebook account will not automatically deactivate your Messenger account as the app is separate from Facebook.

So what happens when you deactivate Messenger? If you deactivate your Facebook Messenger, your profile won’t appear in its search results. However, your messages and comments will still be visible.

So, if you deactivate Facebook and Messenger, what happens to messages? Well, all the messages you sent will still be visible to others. If you want those messages to disappear after a certain time, you can turn on the vanish mode by swiping up while in conversation.

Can I delete Messenger without deleting Facebook?

No, it’s not possible if your Messenger is tied to your Facebook account.

If you’re using a stand-alone version of the app not tied to your Facebook account, you can deactivate your Messenger account by following the points listed above or simply delete the app.

In order to delete your Messenger account that is not tied to your Facebook account you should:

    1. Tap your profile picture in the top left;

    2. Tap Account Settings;

    3. Scroll down and tap Delete Your Account and Information;

    4. Enter your password and tap Submit.

    Best Facebook Messenger alternatives

    • Signal is a great choice if you need strong privacy and good functionality. It offers SMS, video calls, groups calls, file-sharing, and disappearing messages options. Moreover, Signal uses strong encryption protocols, doesn’t store your data, and it is open-sourced, so the community constantly reviews its code;
    • Wickr is another secure messaging app. It automatically deletes your data, so you can be sure it’s not retained. Also, you don’t need your phone number or email address to register. It’s definitely way better solutions privacy-wise, although it is not as user-friendly as many other apps;
    • Telegram. While the app has some flaws, it’s still better than Messenger. It has disappearing messages, an easy-to-use interface and encryption. However, the latter is not a default, so make sure to enable it. Also, it’s not open-source, so its code is not available for public audit.

Whatever messaging app you use, we strongly recommend you use a VPN. It will encrypt your traffic, and you will communicate safely and privately all the time.

Facebook makes it simple not only to keep up with friends and family members who may not live close by, but to stay up-to-date on the latest world news and goings-on of local businesses and companies.

Setting up notifications for new posts, games, and other updates on the site is easy, but sometimes those notifications can become overwhelming.

Luckily, disabling Facebook notifications — or customizing which notifications you receive and which you don’t — is quick and easy. Here’s what you need to know.

How to turn off Facebook notifications on your computer

    1. In your internet browser of choice, navigate to and log into your account.

    2. Once signed in, look for the downward facing arrow in the upper righthand corner of your screen. Click on this to open a dropdown menu of options.

    3. Scroll to the bottom of the list and click on “Settings” to be taken to your account customization screen.

    4. On the left-hand side of your Settings screen, you will see an option for “Notifications.” Click on this to reveal notification settings for mobile, email, text, and website notifications.

    5. Clicking “Edit” next to any of the above options will allow you to turn notifications on or off for a particular element of the Facebook site or mobile app. In this way, Facebook allows you to enable or disable notifications for individual apps and plugins on its site so that you can still receive an alert for the updates you’re most interested in.

    6. Note that Facebook’s notification controls are very specific and that going through every option may be somewhat time-consuming as you will be changing options for specific features individually rather than all games, apps, or tags as a group.

How to turn off Facebook notifications on the mobile app

    1. Locate the Facebook app icon on your phone’s home screen and open it.

    2. In the lower right-hand corner of your screen, click on the three stacked horizontal lines to open a menu of options and scroll down until you find “Settings & Privacy.”

    3. Clicking on “Settings & Privacy” will open an additional sub-menu. Click the second “Settings” to go to your account settings page.

    4. Scroll through the long menu of options nearly to the bottom, where you’ll find an option for “Notification settings” just below the “Notifications” header. Tap this button to see all notifications you are currently receiving from close friends, apps you use on the site, and even posts in groups you belong to.

    5. To customize settings in each of these sections, tap on them individually to turn them on or off, depending on whether or not you would like to receive them.

    6. Note that you can also select how you receive notifications — via email, on mobile, or via text message — through the relevant options listed at the bottom of your “Notification settings” screen. There is no need to save your changes, as this is done automatically via the mobile app.

If you use Facebook, then you might have noticed there are people you aren’t friends with in your Facebook Messenger sidebar when using the desktop website or mobile app. Although this is meant to be a way for you and your potential friends to connect on Facebook, some people find this overbearing and an invasion of privacy.

There is a way to prevent people you aren’t friends with from appearing in your Facebook Messenger sidebar, and we’ll show you how you can do it in this tutorial.

    How did they get there?

First of all, you deserve to know how they got there to begin with; after all, Facebook sure won’t tell you.

At some point in your history of using Facebook, you probably granted Facebook or Facebook Messenger access to your address book on your iOS device(s) without knowing it. This would have uploaded their contact information to Facebook.

Once Facebook has their contact information, they begin suggesting people from your address book who you aren’t already friends with on the website. In addition to recommending them as friends, one of the other places they appear is in your Facebook Messenger sidebar, and they appear as “Other” friends that you have to scroll down to rather than front and center.

Even if you didn’t grant Facebook or Facebook Messenger access to your address book directly, you may have done so indirectly when you signed into Facebook from the Settings → Facebook preferences pane, as you need to disable the Contacts toggle switch to prevent your address book from syncing with Facebook.

    How to remove them

So now that you’ve learned how they got there, it’s time to learn how to remove them, and it’s pretty simple really. Just follow these steps:

    1. Open your favorite web browser and visit the Facebook Messenger contacts page.

    2. Scroll down if necessary, and click on the Delete All button.

    How to disable facebook chat

Note: You will see a list of people’s names in this view, and you can individually delete certain people instead of all of them, if you want to. We’re specifically indicating the ‘Delete All’ function for those of you who only want to see Facebook friends here.

    3. Log out of Facebook on all your devices and sign back in again.

Once you sign back in, you should no longer see anyone in your Facebook Messenger sidebar that isn’t in your Facebook friends list. Anyone from your address book that was uploaded to Facebook at an earlier date has now been disassociated with your friend data.

Logging out and then in again helps clear the caches associated with Facebook. If you had not done so, the people may have remained in your Facebook Messenger chat for several more minutes or page refresh attempts.

Keeping these people from coming back

Okay, so now you outsmarted Facebook, but how can you keep it that way?

To do that, you will have to make sure Facebook and Facebook Messenger don’t have access to your address book on your iOS devices. To do that, take these precautions:

Keep Facebook from accessing Contact data

The first think you should do is keep Facebook from having access to your Contacts. You can do that by following these steps:

    1. Launch the Settings app and go to the Facebook preferences pane.

    How to disable facebook chat

    2. Toggle off the Contacts switch.

Now Facebook will no longer be able to access your address book data. You also need to avoid tapping on the blue Update All Contacts button. Tapping on it will sync your contact data with Facebook, which is the exact opposite of what you want to do.

Keep Facebook Messenger from accessing your Contact data

Next, you need to make sure the Facebook Messenger app can’t access your address book. To do that, follow these steps:

    1. Launch the Settings app and open the Privacy cell.

    How to disable facebook chat

    2. Open the Contacts cell.

    3. Turn off the Messenger toggle switch (if it’s there).

Now, Facebook Messenger won’t be able to access your address book either. If you don’t see Messenger in the list, which usually happens when the app hasn’t yet requested access to something, launch the app first and when it prompts you for Contacts access, don’t allow it.

Now, neither Facebook or Facebook Messenger can update their databases with your address book information. As a result, those “Other” friends that always appeared in your Facebook Messenger sidebar on the desktop website or in the mobile app will be no more.

You never have to be interrupted by your friend’s floating head again.

Chat Heads were introduced several years ago on Facebook Messenger for Android. The feature uses profile pictures of the people you’re talking to on Messenger as shortcuts for the chat—they pop up on your screen, regardless of what you’re doing, and invite you to tap into the conversation.

While the feature can be useful sometimes, it’s mostly just in the way when you’re doing something else on your phone.

    How to disable facebook chat

    How to disable facebook chat

Messenger also has a feature that lets you directly reply from your notification bar when you need to, so the Chat Heads are frankly a bit superfluous—and again, annoying. But they’re still on by default.

Thankfully, it’s pretty easy to get rid of them. Here’s how:

In Messenger, click on your profile button on the top right.

Scroll down to the “Chat Heads” setting and toggle it off.

Are you tired of your Facebook profile, but need to keep in touch with contacts on Messenger? Here’s how to deactivate your account and use the app only.

Are you growing tired of Facebook but still want to chat with your friends via Facebook Messenger? You can! With the standalone Facebook Messenger app. You don’t need to use a traditional Facebook timeline. A lot of people don’t know that’s possible, but it is.

Instead of signing up for a traditional Facebook profile, you can download the FB Messenger App. Instead of logging in with your Facebook profile, choose “Create a New Account,” which will not create a profile but allow using the app. But most people already have a Facebook profile, and if that’s you, here’s how to deactivate your Facebook account and use FB Messenger.

Note: Before deactivating your account, you might want to download a full copy of your photos, videos, and other data first.

Deactivate Your Facebook Account but Keep Facebook Messenger

This is probably where most people are at right now. You have your Facebook account, don’t want to use it, but need to stay in touch with people from your Messenger list. Also, you might want to have the option to go back to your regular Facebook timeline someday. This is where deactivating your account comes in, and it’s easier than you might think.

Launch a browser on your computer and log into Facebook. Click the Account dropdown button on the upper-right corner of the page. Then click Settings & Privacy.

    How to disable facebook chat

Now click on Settings from the menu.

    How to disable facebook chat

Next, from the left-hand menu, click on Your Facebook Information.

    How to disable facebook chat

Scroll to the bottom of the list and click on Deactivation and Deletion.

    How to disable facebook chat

Select the Deactivate Account option on the next screen and then click the Continue to Account Deactivation button.

    How to disable facebook chat

Next, you will get a short questionnaire on why you’re deactivating your account. To get out quickly, click the “Other” option. If you choose anything else, it will pop up more suggestions with links that prompt you not to deactivate your account.

Click the Email opt-out option if you want to stop emails if you want. And make sure to check the “Keep Using Messenger” option and then click the Deactivate button at the bottom.

    How to disable facebook chat

A final message will pop up asking if you’re sure you want to deactivate your account. Click the Deactivate Now button.

    How to disable facebook chat

That’s it. You will be logged out of Facebook and see the following message letting you know your account has been successfully deactivated.

    Deactivating Your Account

Now, it’s important to know that deactivating your account is just getting rid of your timeline — your name, photos, and some things you have shared. Your items will not be deleted. You’re essentially pressing the “pause” button. It doesn’t get rid of everything, and some info will still be visible to others. And this will allow you to reactivate your profile later if you want to.

The idea here is you are getting rid of your profile, the news feed, and the rest of the traditional interface. Moving forward, you can keep in contact with your friends and family via the Facebook Messenger app only.

If you want to completely and permanently get rid of your Facebook account, read our article: How to Permanently Delete Your Facebook Account. After that, if you want to use FB Messenger again, download the app and sign up with a new account.

You can download the standalone Facebook Messenger app for iOS and Android or use the FB Messenger web app from any device. Or, on Windows 10, you can download the Messenger UWP desktop app.
