How to disable router firewall

Something happened when I lost my DSL connection and it came back up. I could not use my Apple/Mac mail app. on my computer, iPad or iPhone. When I took them to any other WIFI they connected but at home they didn’t. I called Verizon to help and they told me that for Apple/Mac mail to work the firewall in their mode/router had to be turned off. I thought I was sure that it had been on before and I never had a problem. Does this make any sense? Does it leave my system open to hackers or others?

As long as the NAT server is still running in the Verizon router, then nothing is getting in, unless you let it. If you check your Mac’s IP address as assigned by the Verizion router, and it is of the form 192.168.x.x, then the NAT server is still running. System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP will tell you what IP address you are using within your home, and when I had a Verizon modem, they used 192.168.x.x IP addresses for devices in the home.

For all intents and purposes a NAT router is an in-bound firewall. This is because a NAT server shares a single Internet addressable IP address with all the devices in your home. The 192.168.x.x IP address are cannot be routed across the internet. Any system out on the internet can only address your router’s IP address, but since this IP address is shared with multiple devices, there is no way the router knowns which of the devices it should send an unsolicited connection request to, so it drops any such request.

So when a NAT server is running in the home router (and just about every home router has a NAT server), the only way for an outside system to make a connection to your Mac, is for your Mac to start the connection, or to tell the router that it is expecting a connection on port nnnnn. And by default Mac OS X does NOT start any services that would tell the router to listen for a connection.

And when Mac OS X does ask the router to listen, Mac OS X tends to require the connection have the correct connection credentials. For example Back-to-My-Mac iCloud service.

With respect to Mail, Mail makes the connection request to the server. The Mail server does not connect to the Mac.

So, feel free to disable the firewall in the Verizon router, and then check to make sure you have a non-routing IP address and you are good.

Non-routine IP addresses are :

172.16.x.x, 172.17.x.x, 172.18.x.x . 172.31.x.x

If your Mac has any of these, then a NAT server is between you and the internet.

This guide explains what a firewall is and why you need one. It also describes the difference between a software firewall (like Windows 10 Firewall) and a hardware firewall.

There are times you may need to disable the Windows 10 Firewall. For instance if you have bought a software firewall you may want to use it instead of the Windows 10 Firewall. It is not a good idea to have two software firewalls running at the same time. Normally one of them will disable the other.

It is also important to remember that it is a good idea to run both a software firewall and a hardware firewall. Most current routers have a hardware firewall included.

Disable Windows 10 Firewall

The first step in disabling your Windows 10 Firewall is to find the firewall. Click the button on your keyboard that looks like a window. This is called the Windows Key.

This brings up the start menu. Type the word firewall in the the search. The choose the option that reads Windows Firewall.

A new window appears that is titled Help protect your PC with Windows Firewall. On this page you can see the status of your firewall. To disable the Windows 10 Firewall click the option of Turn Windows Firewall on or off in the left sidebar.

You should now see a page where you can turn on or off your Windows Firewall. Simply click the option labeled Turn off Windows Firewall (not recommended).

Then press OK at the bottom of the screen to apply your change.

Warning: DO NOT disable the Windows 10 Firewall unless you have another software firewall to replace it immediately. Your computer has a very high risk of becoming infected with a nasty Internet bug if you do not have a software firewall in place at all times.

My Nintendo Wii has had the same error for three months when trying to update and apparently the solution is to temporarily disable your router firewall and then switch it back on once the update is complete.

The router we have is one from talk talk, theres no buttons on other than a power one, so how do you disable it at all as I have no idea!

What is FirewallD

FirewallD is the Dynamic Firewall Manager of Linux systems. This service is used to configure the network connections, thus deciding which external network or internal packets to allow traversing the network and which to block.

It allows two types of configurations, permanent and runtime. Runtime configurations will get lost ones the service is restarted while the permanent ones get retained across the system boot so that they are followed every time the service gets active.

Corresponding to these configurations, firewallD has two directories, default/fallback one (/usr/lib/firewall) which is lost ones system is updated and the system configuration (/etc/firewall) which remains permanent and overrides the default one if given. This is found as a default service in RHEL/CentOS 7 and Fedora 18.

What is Iptables

Iptables is another service which decides to allow, drop or return IP packets. Iptables service manages Ipv4 packets while Ip6tables manages Ipv6 packets. This service manages a list of tables where each table is maintained for different purpose like: ‘filter‘ table is for firewall rules, ‘nat‘ table is consulted in case of new connection, ‘mangle‘ in case of packet alterations and so on.

Each table further has chains which can be built-in or user-defined where a chain signifies a set of rules which are applies to a packet, thus deciding what the target action for that packet should be i.e. it must be ALLOWED, BLOCKED or RETURNED. This service is a default service on systems like: RHEL/CentOS 6/5 and Fedora, ArchLinux, Ubuntu etc.

Hi I need to turn off my firewall on a Windows ME older computer. I cannot find security center anywhere? I need to install a Buffalo wireless adapter but it remains disabled and I do not know what to do?? Please help?

I have done everything what it says, with the recomendations. But i still cannot get onto Windows Messenger 2009. It keeps saying “We were unable to sign you into .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of a problem with this service or with your Internet Connection. Please make sure you are connected to the internet.” But my internet connection is fine. Is it the firewall that is blocking it? I have been trying different things all day, and i cannot seem to be able to sign in please help!

i get into control panel on sec.cntr.but i get a box that has nothing to do with firewall so unable to click on to recommendations. the box has areas in alphabetical order but nothing close to Firewall now what else can i do there should be some standards set up that need to give the consumer the option as to except or decline a product

But so far this is a top-notch security feature provided by Windows if you know how to use it right. You can configure your firewall to block particular applications from using the Internet and securing your local data.

Block applications from accessing the Internet with GUI is easy. simply go to the Start menu and search for Firewall & Network protection. From the dialogue box, click on Domain Network and turn the Firewall Off. Likewise, you have to turn off the firewall for Private Network and Public Network. In case you need to turn off the firewall only for the Internet, turn off the Firewall only for Public Network.

However, if you are like me who prefer to disable Windows firewall with the command line, here’s a quick way to do it on Windows 10 and 7.

Next, we need to find the location of the .exe file in our system. Usually, it should be in C:\\Program Files, unless you have defined it manually.

I successfully configured a client bridge with Gargoyle and since 1.3.13 the bridge runs stable.
The only issue I still have is that not all services are forwarded. I can’t access the DMR function of the connected Mediaplayer for example.
The web GUI doesn’t allow to disable the firewall. Is there any other possibility to disable it? I’m not sure this is the root cause, but I wanted to give this a try.

Depends what you are trying to do?

I’ve used the built in Windows XP firewall for a long time.

Have never had issues with it, but its one failure point is that it
does not block a lot of out-bound traffic.
In-bound blocking – its very good, out-bound – not so much.

You can try Tiny Personal Firewall 2.0.15A for Windows XP
Will NOT work on Vista/Win 7 though. Free and highly configurable.

After you enable an Internet firewall, you may not be able to search, or browse, for other computers on your home or office network. And you may not be able to share files with other computers on your home or office network. For example, when you enable the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) feature in Windows XP, you find that you can’t browse your network by using My Network Places. Also, if you use the net view \\computername command to view shares on a computer on your home or office network, you may receive the following error message:

This behavior may occur if you enable a firewall on the network connection that you use for your home or office network. By default, a firewall closes the ports that are used for file and print sharing. The purpose is to prevent Internet computers from connecting to file and print shares on your computer.

1. Regular or automatic updates

When a router gets an update, you probably won’t know about it. Newer routers can download them automatically and nearly every router has options to update the firmware manually; so if it’s not an automatic process, you’ll need to check for them every three months.

To get to your router admin page, you’ll need the IP address used by your router and the admin password. These may be written on the user guide for your brand of router, but if you don’t have this information, there are sites that can help you find them. Once you’ve opened your router’s admin page, find a section called “Advanced” or “Management” to look for firmware updates. Download any updates. If there is an option in your router’s settings that enables automatic updates, turn it on.

2. Stronger encryption

Most routers include encryption by default. If you’re required to enter a password to connect, you already have it set up. But don’t move on just yet – there are different types of Wi-Fi encryptions, and some are much weaker than others. . Don’t forget, many routers ship with options for outdated encryption settings.

The most popular Wi-Fi security right now is Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) encryption. The original WPA is over a decade old, but if you’re shopping for a new router, be sure it supports WPA3. To check your encryption settings, go to the router’s admin menu. You should be able to find encryption under the “Wireless” or “Security” menu. If you still have an older router, select one that starts with “WPA2.”

If your router is not WPA3 compatible, “WPA2-PSK AES” is the next most secure option. If you have older gadgets on your Wi-Fi network, you might have to select “WPA2-PSK AES + WPA-PSK TKIP” to get them working.

This hybrid setting keeps the benefits of WPA2 while leaving compatibility for older, less secure devices. If your main network is securely encrypted, they’ll be safe to use.

Most importantly, never choose “Open,” which means no security at all. The same goes for WEP, which is a highly outdated standard that’s easily hacked.

3. A built-in firewall

One of the best security tools built into your router is the firewall. Nearly every router from the last decade includes one in some form or another.

Not every router labels its firewall the same. You usually find this feature under your router’s advanced settings like “NAT filtering,” “port forwarding,” “port filtering” or “services blocking.”

These settings let you tweak your network’s incoming and outgoing data ports and protect them from outsiders. But be extremely careful with these settings; your default firewall is usually enough, and misconfiguring your ports can knock you off the web or make it easier for hackers to break in.

If you do make a mistake in this area, call your internet provider. A trained technician will know the optimal port settings for your service.

But I also agree with the scenario others mentioned, that the OP possibly wanted to install some software that complained, that port 443 is already in use.

  • Ok, I’m kinda computer literate on many fronts, but I am clueless about networking. Here’s the scenario:

    For a while, I’ve been using Windows Live Messenger to video chat with my family while on the road for work. It’s been great for the kids AND me; keeps us all sane. Until recently, my home desktop was connected to the internet via an ethernet cable connection to a DSL modem. No firewall in the modem, though I’ve always used ZoneAlarm Pro on the computer.

    I’ve recently set up a new modem/wireless router to eliminate the DSL wire running across the room. Now, my desktop connects wirelessly to a 2Wire router. I’m NOT really running a home network. My desktop and laptop both use the wireless internet, but they aren’t networked to each other.

    You can see where this is going. Since changing to the router, Live Messenger video chat no longer works well. Video is freezing, audio hardly exists. It’s so bad it’s pointless to try and use. The regular internet works great however, with faster speeds than before.

    So. I assume this has something to do with the firewall built into the 2Wire router. I’ve tried turning off firewall protection for the desktop (DMZplus mode, whatever that means) and when I use hotel wifi on the laptop, video chat works well again.

    So. how necessary is this router firewall? If I just leave it in DMZ mode but continue to run ZoneAlarm Pro on my desktop, are there any massive security risks with this? More to the point, is this setup any different or more dangerous than my old configuration of using the wired modem (with no firewall) and ZoneAlarm Pro?

    In this tutorial we will learn how to disable ICMP and ICMPv6 redirects on the Linux server. ICMP redirects are used on routers so if your Linux server is not acting as a router then as a general security practice it is recommended to disable the redirects. Even if your Linux server is acting as a router with forwarding turned ON, you can disable ICMP redirects on selective interface using kernel parameters (sysctl).

    1. What are ICMP redirects

    • An ICMP redirect packet is generated by a router to inform a host of a better route to some specific destination.
    • The recipient of an ICMP redirect overrides its route table with the information given in the redirect packet.
    • Redirects are only required when a non-default router is preferred for some particular peer addresses, and this knowledge is not hard-configured on the system.
    • The default router will then be initially attempted for sends to those peers and, if it supports redirects, it will respond with one naming the alternate router.
    • It may or may not also forward the original packet.
    • If this system accepts redirects it uses the information given to create a temporary routing entry for the alternate router.
    • The advantage of such a configuration is that the knowledge of the network architecture and the required routers need be maintained on only a relatively few systems – the routers that are default-router for each subnet, rather than all client systems on all subnets.
    • The disadvantage is that malicious systems could send redirects to manipulate other systems.

    2. How to disable ICMP redirects for IPv4

    There are two methods to ignore ICMP requests. The below section covers only IPv4 network.

    2.1 Using firewall rule

    We can add a rule with firewalld to block all the TCMP redirects. First of all get the list of active zones

    Windows firewall can be enabled/disabled from command line using netsh command.

    Windows 10 / Windows 8/ Windows 7 / Server 2008 /Vista:

    Let’s see the syntax of netsh advfirewall to configure firewall on these Windows versions. Firewall settings are different for each of the 3 networks(Domain, private, public). So based on which network firewall you want to enable/disable, the command would vary.

    You can turn on firewall for the current network profile(does not matter if it’s domain/private/public network) using the below command.

    The router that my ISP has delivered contains an IPv6 firewall. The only configuration option is whether it is on or off. Apparently, this firewall simply denies all incoming connections.

    I understand this is to prevent exposing all hosts and all their open ports to the entire internet.

    If I want to receive incoming IPv6 connection then I will need to disable this firewall.

    Is it dangerous to disable it? I wonder if devices such as PCs and mobile devices are secure enough to be exposed to the internet. They certainly are supposed to be secure but are they secure in a practical sense?

    Yes, it is dangerous to disable a firewall with out any compensating controls or replacement filtering. It is true that an internet IP address indexer for IPv6 has much more to cover, but it does happen. Sans has articles on this.

    One of the issues here is that IPv6 allows for a direct attack on an internal device. NAT is not used (at least that is the intention of ipv6) so an attacker doesn’t discover the router first, it is trying to send messages directly to the device internally.

    Although there is less attention placed on attacking ipv6, it definitely is happening. In my day job we look for ipv6 on internal networks that are ipv4 based as signs of a breech.

    A suggestion for an answer to the question of “if I turn off full blocking of ipv6 because I want to use it, what then?” would be to run through a pfsense box. Here is an article. This would allow only devices and services that you want exposed to the internet open, instead of all devices on your network, some that may have vulnerabilities or mis-configurations.

    My opinion is that it is not dangerous to disable the firewall. But still, it is a bit unwise.

    I have had since year 2014 (if I recall right) directly connected IPv6 without any firewall at all, but there have never been any attempts using IPv6, even if the primary devices sit in the addresses ::1 and ::10. With IPv4 it happens all the time, trying SSH, trying HTTP vulnerabilities, trying common usernames and passwords etc. I use fail2ban, and additionally I route a bunch of large /12 . /16 IPv4 blocks to /dev/null because they are useless for me. Without those the number of log rows from IPv4 attempts would be well above 100.000 per day. But as said, never anything with IPv6.

    I am not saying that IPv6 attempts will not come. But I consider IPv6 much harder for hacking because of the trillion-size address space.

    If I would need myself to break into a /64 IPv6 subnet, I do not know where to start from. Perhaps I should first use some other means (fake phone call about support?) to find what equipment is in that destination, to be able to guess ranges of MAC addresses and the calculated IPv6 addresses, instead of shooting randomly the 2^64 block. Or concentrate on such vendor MAC addresses where the vendor is known to have certain vulnerabilities.
