With thousands of laughter clubs across the United States alone, laughter yoga is seriously taking hold. It’s an infectious workout regime that helps you to stop taking things too seriously and to concentrate on the joyful side of life.

If you’d like to go laughing through the day, with all the benefits laughter brings, practice laughing yoga. Laughter is healthy – through the restoration of laughter, people regain happiness all too easily repressed in our serious, somber and speedy modern world. Here is how to get started in Laughter Yoga.

Laughter Yoga was started by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995. It combines gentle yoga breathing (Pranayama), stretching, and simulated unconditional laughter. When the laughter is practiced in a group setting, the laughter soon becomes genuine. Some of the benefits from laughter and Laughter Yoga include:

  • Health benefits: The health benefits of laughter are extensive. After laughing, the positive effects of laughter last up to 45 minutes, benefiting the cardiovascular system and reducing blood pressure; indeed, studies have shown that people suffering from heart disease are 40 percent less likely to laugh in many situations compared to people without heart disease. Laughter even speeds healing.
  • Stress relief: Laughter is a means to reduce anxiety and stress, as well as fostering a positive attitude and feeling of happiness. Within minutes of laughing, stress levels drop.
  • It’s an aerobic workout. Laughter Yoga workouts are good for your heart, diaphragm, abdominal, intercostal, respiratory, and facial muscles. As part of the “workout,” endorphins are released, giving you a sense of well-being.
  • It restores playfulness in your life. Children laugh up to 300-400 times a day during their formative years, and this reduces to 10-15 times a day as an adult.
  • Laughter can make you more attractive to others, improving your communication and relationships.

Accept that you don’t need a reason to laugh – just start laughing.

Perform the Laughter Yoga exercises. The following steps will explain the Laughter Yoga exercises that make up each class or session. Your teacher or group may develop their own variants, but these basics are standard and knowing them will help you to practice at home as well as within the group.

Clap your hands in front of the heart chakra.

  • Focus on your stomach and laugh – “Ho, ho.”
  • Focus on your chest and laugh – “Ha ha.”
  • Change constantly between your abdomen and your chest up and down, and shout, “Ho ho, Ha ha, Ho ho.”

Lay your hands on your head.

Laugh inside your head “He he he,” to clean your head of tension.

  • Then lay your hands on your chest and shout “Ha ha ha”.
  • Lay your hands on your stomach and yell “Ho ho ho”.
  • Concentrate on your feet and trample with your feet on the ground, saying – “Hu hu hu.”

Do the laughing wave.

Bow your upper body to the earth. Have your hands facing down. Focus on the ground. Send your hands upward to heaven. Wail like a siren: “Ha ha ha ha.” Perform the laughing wave several times. Through your laughter, connect heaven and earth.

Do the welcome laughter.

Within a group, keep eye contact and laugh, until all people in the group are happy. At home, look in the mirror and welcome yourself. When you look into the mirror there is always something to laugh about.

Extend your hands to heaven.

Concentrate on your chest and laugh “Ha ha ha” for a minute.

Think the mantra:

“May all beings be happy. Let there be a world of laughing.” See all people in the world and see ourselves as laughing Buddhas, laughing gods, or laughing holinesses.

Sing the Om Song.

At the end of your Laughter Yoga, sing the mantra “Om” for one minute. Sing it with your own melody. Sense in which part of your body the Om resonates best. Sing the Om until you are calm. Then proceed optimistically through your day.

How to do laughter yoga

Unlike a lot of workout and yoga activities, Laughter Yoga is more of a group practice than an individual one. In one of my laughter sessions I guide the group through a set of activities to encourage them to let go of their inhibitions and laugh freely. Since Covid 19 I’ve been doing sessions online and I’m really pleased to say there has been no issues with people getting all of the benefits of Laughter Yoga remotely. However, I understand that some people may feel uncomfortable laughing in groups so I thought I’d share some tips on how to do Laughter Yoga at home.

Step 1: Warming Up

Start by stimulating your acupressure points through a hearty clapping session. Keep your palm fully open and try for a full hand to hand contact. To further elevate the energy levels, keep increasing the clapping speed. You can also move your hands up and down and sway them from side to side for full-body warm-up.

Step 2: Chant

While you are gearing up for the yoga session through the clapping activity, you can start by a simple and light chant that prepares you and your vocal cords for the laughter riot that is to come. Go for a normal ‘HO, HO, HO, HA-HA-HA’. Now, as you level up and put in more energy, try to ensure that the chanting sounds are coming from your belly. This will stimulate the diaphragmatic breathing and help you with good, loud laughter later.

Step 3: Deep Breathing

Before you start your Laughter Yoga session you can begin with detoxifying your lungs. Simple deep breathing exercises will prepare your body for the activities to come and bring physical and mental relaxation simultaneously. Pull in a deep breath until your lungs are full, then hold for a beat, before exhaling. Repeat this exercise until you feel nice and relaxed.

Step 4: Relax And Let Go

Adopting child-like behaviours is the best way to ensure that you have a great and beneficial laughter yoga session. During my sessions my main job is helping people lose their inhibitions. If you want to know how to do laughter yoga at home then it can be as easy as relaxing and not caring about anything but the moment. Forget about what anybody thinks and pretend you’re the only person in the world. When you finally let go you’ll feel a sense of enormous well-being.

Step 5: Laughter Time

Once you are all set with the warm and all prepared, it is time to go for a hearty laughter session. And while there is no right or wrong way to laugh, here are a few Laughter yoga exercises that you can try for optimum results:

Cell Phone Laughter : Hold an imaginary cell phone to your ear and laugh.

Gradient Laughter : Fake a smile; giggle, then laugh slowly and gradually increase in tempo and volume.

Hearty Laughter : Spread your arms up, look up and laugh heartily as you direct your laughter to come straight from your heart.

No Money Laughter : Laugh as turn your pockets inside out looking for money that isn’t there.

Mental floss laugh : Imagine that you have wrapped a thread of dental floss between your fingers. Now imagine threading the floss between your ears to clear out the ‘stinking thinking’ that can build up, like dental plaque, in the mind. Jiggle it around, to and fro, while laughing. Then throw the ‘floss’ and the worries away.

That’s just a few of the many exercises that Laughing Yoga involves. Hopefully this advice lets you know how to do Laughter Yoga at home.

As we get older, laughter comes less and less easy to us as we experience the trials and tribulations that come along with being an adult, taking on responsibilities we could never have imagined having as children. This alone is all the more reason to tap into our inner child and laugh without a care in the world, and regain that light happiness we were once so familiar with.

Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga is a movement that was founded by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995. He and his wife noticed that there was a similar breathing pattern between laughing and pranayama, and so Laughter Yoga was born. The yoga part of Laughter is the combination of Laughter Exercises with yoga breathing techniques.

A series of studies carried out by researchers showed the benefits related to laughing are:

Stimulated the immune system

Laughing reduces Kapha

When we laugh, our body releases endorphins – one of the happy hormones – and it’s flooded with a, sometimes, overwhelming feeling of weightlessness. Same as with Pranayama, you increase the oxygen in your body and brain, which makes you feel healthy and energetic. This directly combats the heavy and sluggish qualities of Kapha, as we diminish the negative effects of stress while simultaneously strengthening the immune system.

How to do it

Before you take part in this healing therapy, it’s important to let go of any preconceived notions you may have of what is funny and what isn’t, and to just laugh. You don’t necessarily need to be happy to do so, because while our mind may be fully aware of our mood, our body cannot tell the difference.

In fact, Dr. Madan Katari has shared that laughter has two sources, one from the body and one from the mind. As adults, we laugh from the mind as we put too much thought into. everything, really. Whereas with children, they tend to laugh from the body, and it is especially noticeable when they play.

So start to laugh, even if it’s a fake laugh, just do it. Your body won’t be able to tell the difference between a fake and a real laugh. There are many laughter exercises that can be used, but they can differ depending on the environment and cultures.

A few exercises you can try

1. The applause exercise – Clap quietly and make humming sounds you’d make when approving of something. Gradually let the humming get louder until you are clapping and laughing faster and wilder. Try to go as loud as you possibly can!

2. The embarrassment exercise – Think of an embarrassing moment and retell it aloud in a gibberish or babbling manner while laughing. Be sure to move your arms around or clap as you go along.

3. The electric shock exercise – You pretend that everything you touch gives you a shock of static electricity. It can be anything like a chair or your leg. Every time you do it, physically jump back and laugh as you do so.

4. A group hearty laugh exercise – Have a partner or group of friends join in. Sit in a circle, do a count down, and then everyone should start laughing at the same time, all while trying to match the tone and pitch to everyone else’s laughter. Remember to stretch your arms out, raise your chin skyward, and release a hearty laugh, as if coming straight from your heart.

No matter the exercise you choose, doing it on a daily basis will surely relieve tension, cultivate a positive feeling, and restore control within. This is your invitation to go greet your inner child and laugh without a care in the world, like there is no rhyme or reason to do so.

Let’s face it… anyone can laugh when things are good. But what’s so wonderful about laughter yoga is that it teaches people how to laugh unconditionally so they can do so even during difficult times. Imagine being able to keep a positive mental attitude regardless of how horrible circumstances seem. Strength in adversity—what an awesome coping mechanism! This is one of the many benefits that regular laughter can provide. Best of all, it is free, anyone can do it and it’s available anytime.

Every time I introduce laughter yoga to a new group, I share these words. Having uttered them time and time again, I’ve become immune to the significance, meaning and impact that they can potentially have on those hearing them for the first time. All that changed for me a few weeks ago during a session I led as part of a “Managing Holiday Stress” series.

While the majority of the participants that day were open, receptive and willing to attempt the various exercises that I introduced to them, there was a man and a woman present with scowls on their faces along with matching attitudes that blatantly projected — “I dare you to make me laugh.”

Turn That Frown Upside Down

They know this is laughter exercise. Why did they come here if they really don’t want to participate? They are going to challenge me, be negative and ruin the experience for everyone… I nervously thought to myself. Not wanting to let their demeanors get to me, I carried on with the agenda, keeping the atmosphere light and uplifting. Then an amazing thing happened. As time went on, these two relaxed, opened up and actually began enjoying themselves. This duo that arrived weighed down with negativity lightened up, laughed, and even encouraged others to do the same. The transformation was amazing and heart-warming.

As I do at each of the sessions I lead, prior to beginning the activity, I instructed these participants to close their eyes, take a moment or two and rate how they were feeling on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being “I feel horrible” and 10 being “I couldn’t feel any better.” As our time together was coming to a close, I told the group to repeat this assessment. I then asked if anyone felt any different than they had when they first arrived.

Surprisingly, the two who came in with the worst attitudes, spoke up and shared how they were changed by the class. The gentleman told the gathering that he usually keeps his emotions under check. However, for the first time he was able to open up and he wanted to continue doing these exercises on a regular basis. The woman shared that she came in not expecting to laugh and was surprised that she was able to do so.

I quickly realized that these two folks didn’t come to dare, test or defy me. In fact, their actions and expressions had absolutely nothing to do with me. Instead, it became crystal clear that they came searching for a way to lighten their mood, ease some of their burdens and experience joy and laughter. Fortunately, they found it.

All of us present felt the magnitude of the transformative experience we just shared. It was such a powerful testament to the benefits of laughter yoga! And I’m looking forward to helping facilitiate more, and in our own little ways, we can do the same and help othes find laughter in their lives.

5 Laughter Yoga Exercises To Release Stress

  • Argument Laughter: Voice your discontent in laughter sounds only, or in pig-latin. You can be as passionate as you’d like and point fingers if you want, just don’t hit (or even threaten to hit) anything or anybody.
  • Credit Card Bill Laughter: Open an imaginary credit card bill (or any other letter that represents a bad news to you) and burst out laughing the second you look at what’s inside.
  • Electric Shock Laughter: Imagine that everything and everybody you touch gives you a shock of static electricity. Jump backward and laugh each time it happens (make it happen a lot).
  • I Don’t Know Why I Am Laughing: Laugh (fake is perfectly fine) and shrug your shoulders and make a big smile as you look at yourself in a mirror or anybody else who might be there and try to convey the message with your eyes and body language “I absolutely don’t know why I am laughing”.
  • No Money Laughter: Laugh as turn your pockets inside out looking for money that isn’t there.

5 Laughter Yoga Exercises For Children

  • Baby Laughter: One person must demonstrate how a baby laughs (take turns!). Everybody else must then do the same things.
  • Favorite Animal Laughter: Laugh and behave the way your favorite animal or pet would behave if it was very happy to see you.
  • Chicken Laughter: Imagine you are a chicken. First lay 3 eggs in 3 laughs, then laugh with lots of excitement in your voice as you go tell the world about it.
  • Jumping Frog: Squat down, hands on the floor between your knees. Jump once saying “ha”, then a second time saying “ha ha”, a third time saying “ha ha ha”, then jump in fast succession laughing a lot.
  • Laughter Vowels: Let’s learn the laughter vowels! Let’s start with “A” as in “hat”: Aaaaa ha ha ha ha ha”. Next is “E” as in “hen”: Eeeee he he he he he. Next is “I” a in “hiccup”: Iiiii hi hi hi hi hi. Next is “O” as in “Otto”: Ooooo ho ho ho ho ho. Last is “U” as in “soup”: Uuuuu hu hu hu hu hu.

5 Laughter Yoga Exercises For Seniors

  • Back Pain Laughter: Lean forward and put your hand on your lower back, then laugh as if you could not stand back up.
  • Conductor Laughter: Imagine you are a conductor. Direct an imaginary orchestra with enthusiastic arm movements as you sing any song of your choice in laughter sounds only e.g. ho ho ho or “ha ha ha”.
  • Ear-Wiggle Laughter: Slowly slide your left hand upward along the left side of your head, slowly going over your head as you say an extended “aeeee” sound, then laugh as you wiggle your right ear with your left fingers. Do the same on the other side. Repeat a few times.

AKA: “why you don’t need to be a Yoga Teacher to become a Laughter Yoga Leader…”

Learning to be a Laughter Yoga Leader – without any experience in Yoga – here we break down the training, into the whats, whys, wheres, hows and what-ifs.

Lots of people connect with me to ask about training. One of their key questions is: “Don’t I need to be a Yoga Teacher first”? The short answer is “No – you don’t”. The longer answer is below:

First of all let’s look at a few definitions:

“Yoga” – simply means joining up. With Laughter Yoga, it’s joining up Laughter with deep yogic breathing. Often this can also mean the joining up to deeper peace, a connectivity between mind and body, and a very embodied experience.

“Laughter Yoga” – Laughter for no reason (other than it’s very good for you) combine with deep yogic breathing

Laughter Yoga sessions: Lots of laughter, childlike playfulness, no “comedy” other than what you find funny, and mainly this is the funniness of being with other people who are having so much fun. Then the follow-up with deeper Laughter Meditations and guided visualisations.

Laughter Yoga can be done on the floor, standing up, sitting down, etc. There are no actual body stretches (other than the breathing) and there are no limitations to it’s physicality. There are no needs for yoga mats, or blocks, or lycra. Often I will run a Laughter Yoga session in a business setting, with people wearing suits (though they tend to take off their jackets and loosen their ties!)

How to do laughter yoga

As we get older, laughter comes less and less easy to us as we experience the trials and tribulations that come along with being an adult, taking on responsibilities we could never have imagined having as children. This alone is all the more reason to tap into our inner child and laugh without a care in the world, and regain that light happiness we were once so familiar with.

Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga is a movement that was founded by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995. He and his wife noticed that there was a similar breathing pattern between laughing and pranayama, and so Laughter Yoga was born. The yoga part of Laughter is the combination of Laughter Exercises with yoga breathing techniques.

A series of studies carried out by researchers showed the benefits related to laughing are:

Stimulated the immune system

Laughing reduces Kapha

When we laugh, our body releases endorphins – one of the happy hormones – and it’s flooded with a, sometimes, overwhelming feeling of weightlessness. Same as with Pranayama, you increase the oxygen in your body and brain, which makes you feel healthy and energetic. This directly combats the heavy and sluggish qualities of Kapha, as we diminish the negative effects of stress while simultaneously strengthening the immune system.

How to do it

Before you take part in this healing therapy, it’s important to let go of any preconceived notions you may have of what is funny and what isn’t, and to just laugh. You don’t necessarily need to be happy to do so, because while our mind may be fully aware of our mood, our body cannot tell the difference.

In fact, Dr. Madan Katari has shared that laughter has two sources, one from the body and one from the mind. As adults, we laugh from the mind as we put too much thought into. everything, really. Whereas with children, they tend to laugh from the body, and it is especially noticeable when they play.

So start to laugh, even if it’s a fake laugh, just do it. Your body won’t be able to tell the difference between a fake and a real laugh. There are many laughter exercises that can be used, but they can differ depending on the environment and cultures.

A few exercises you can try

1. The applause exercise – Clap quietly and make humming sounds you’d make when approving of something. Gradually let the humming get louder until you are clapping and laughing faster and wilder. Try to go as loud as you possibly can!

2. The embarrassment exercise – Think of an embarrassing moment and retell it aloud in a gibberish or babbling manner while laughing. Be sure to move your arms around or clap as you go along.

3. The electric shock exercise – You pretend that everything you touch gives you a shock of static electricity. It can be anything like a chair or your leg. Every time you do it, physically jump back and laugh as you do so.

4. A group hearty laugh exercise – Have a partner or group of friends join in. Sit in a circle, do a count down, and then everyone should start laughing at the same time, all while trying to match the tone and pitch to everyone else’s laughter. Remember to stretch your arms out, raise your chin skyward, and release a hearty laugh, as if coming straight from your heart.

No matter the exercise you choose, doing it on a daily basis will surely relieve tension, cultivate a positive feeling, and restore control within. This is your invitation to go greet your inner child and laugh without a care in the world, like there is no rhyme or reason to do so.

I’ve been practicing Laughter Yoga for over a decade and one of the questions I get the most after I tell people I’m a Laughter Yoga Teacher is “I laugh all the time, why should I do Laughter Yoga?”

There are three compelling reasons to practice Laughter Yoga. You can remember them because each of the reasons starts with the letter “D.” That is, the three important reasons to practice Laughter Yoga are:

  • Duration: The Healthiest Laughter is Prolonged Laughter
  • Depth: The Healthiest Laughter is Deep, Diaphragmatic Laughter
  • Dependability: The Healthiest Laughter is Dependable Laughter

Before we dive in let’s make sure we are all on the same page about “What is Laughter Yoga?”. That’s the question I get asked the most.

Laughter Yoga is a unique health concept where anyone can laugh heartily without relying on jokes, humor, or comedy. The concept is based on scientific evidence that both genuine real and self-simulated laughter both cause similar physiological and psychological responses. In a Laughter Yoga session we initiate laughter as exercise, but through eye-contact and childlike playfulness, self-simulated laughter becomes real and contagious. Laughter Yoga combines laughter exercises with deep breathing.

The practice was started by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995. Dr. Kataria had read about that the health benefits of laughter could be received even if the laughter was just generated by making laughing sounds. When he read this he thought, “Why not start a Laughter Club?” And thus, the Laughter Yoga movement was born. It all started with just five people laughing in park and has now spread so that there are thousands of laughter clubs in over 100 countries worldwide. Now that we are all clear on what Laughter Yoga is, let’s talk about why you would want to engage in the practice.

The Healthiest Laughter is Prolonged Laughter

The first “D” is Duration. To reap the scientifically validated health benefits of laughter, a person must laugh continuously for at least 10 to 15 minutes. This is difficult to do in “real life.” Natural laughter may only come for just a few seconds here and there and is not usually enough to bring about physiological and biochemical changes in the body. In Laughter Yoga sessions participants simulate laughter as a form of exercise; therefore, the laughter can be prolonged.

In Laughter Yoga sessions we seek to laugh continuously for at least 10-15 minutes, if not longer. We are able to do laugh longer because we intersperse deep breathing exercises in between the laughter exercises. A breathing exercise is typically interspersed into the session after every couple of exercises or whenever the group looks like they need a break.

The Healthiest Laughter is Deep, Diaphragmatic Laughter

The Second “D” is Depth. The healthiest laughter is loud and comes from deep within the diaphragm. If you’ve ever laughed really loud in a public space, you may have noticed that you may have gotten some disapproving glances from bystanders. It’s not always socially acceptable to laugh loudly. That’s where Laughter Yoga comes in. Laughter Yoga sessions provide a safe environment where a people can laugh heartily without negative social implications.

The Healthiest Laughter is Dependable Laughter

The third “D” stands for Dependability. Because the basis of Laughter Exercise is unconditional and self-generated laughter, it is dependable. Natural laughter is dependent on circumstances and may happen naturally or not. By practicing Laughter Yoga, a person is not leaving laughter to chance, but doing it out of commitment. This ensures that a person receives the health benefits of laughter, regardless of personal life circumstances.

How do I get started with Laughter Yoga?

You may be wondering what happens at a Laughter Club. The short answer is that a lot of fun happens! Participants come together as a group (either in person or online) and begin by warming up the body and voice with gentle stretches and laughter sounds. Then the Laughter Yoga Leader leads the group in various laughter exercises to help participants be playful and laugh. As participants make eye contact with each other while laughing, the laughter becomes genuine and contagious laughter.

The session usually ends with a Laughter Meditation. The Laughter Meditation is like the cherry on top. It’s the time that participants drop the laughter exercises and just allow any remaining laughter to flow like a fountain. It’s normal to take breaks from the laughter and enjoy deep breathing throughout the Laughter Meditation.

Are there any contraindications for Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga is like any other aerobic exercise and may not be suitable for everyone, as it involves some physical strain and a rise in intra-abdominal pressure. Some people may have pre- existing medical conditions should take reasonable precaution before engaging laughter exercises.

It is contraindicated for people experiencing any kind of hernia, heart disease with angina pain, persistent cough with breathlessness, uncontrolled high blood pressure, incontinence, epilepsy, advanced (bleeding) piles and hemorrhoids, severe backache, any acute symptoms of cough, cold and fever.

People with heart disease and high blood pressure but who are stable on medication and can take a brisk walk for 30 minutes without any symptoms can do Laughter Yoga with advice from their medical doctor.

People who have undergone major surgery should wait at least three months before doing Laughter Yoga. If in doubt first consult a medical professional for guidance. People who have undergone bypass surgery can also do Laughter Yoga after their stress test is normal.

Pregnancy is also a relative contraindication. Women are in advanced stage of pregnancy or with a previous history of miscarriages should refrain from doing Laughter Yoga.

IMPORTANT: Before any Laughter Yoga session it is important for Certified Laughter Yoga Leaders and Teachers to make the following announcement: “Laughter Yoga is like any other aerobic exercise. Should you experience any discomfort, please discontinue and get medical advice.”

What is laughter yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a relatively new form of exercise described by some as ‘internal jogging’.

The activity is seen as a form of physical exercise through prolonged voluntary laughter.

It is said that the act of making yourself laugh provides the same physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter.

One practitioner claims this is because “the mind does not know that we’re faking it.”

How do you do it and what are the benefits?

Laughter yoga sessions generally start with gentle warm-up techniques which include stretching, chanting, clapping, eye contact and body movement.

These help to break down inhibitions and encourage a sense of playfulness.

Breathing exercises are used to prepare the lungs for laughter, followed by a series of ‘laughter exercises’ that combine the method of acting and visualization techniques with playfulness.

Laughter exercises are interspersed with breathing exercises.

Laughing is an easy way to strengthen all immune functions, bring more oxygen to the body and brain, foster positive feelings and improve interpersonal skills.

It is said that just twenty minutes of laughter is sufficient to develop fully physiological benefits.

It’s definitely a great way to banish those January blues.

How to do laughter yoga

Where does the practice originate?

The concept of laughter yoga was created in India in the mid-1990s.

In March 1995, Dr Madan Kataria, a GP from Mumbai decided to write an article called “Laughter – the best medicine”.

The outcome of his research for this article surprised him greatly as decades of scientific research had already proved that laughter had a documented positive impact as form of complementary preventive and therapeutic medicine.

In particular he was impressed by the findings of Norman Cousins, an American journalist who was diagnosed in 1964 with a degenerative disease and given at best 6 months to live.

It was reported that Cousins had managed to heal himself completely using laughter as his main form of therapy.

Being a man of action, Dr. Kataria decided to try this out for himself and went to his local park on March 13th, 1995, with the intention of starting a “laughter club” where people would share jokes.

Somehow he managed to motivate four people to laugh with him that day.

This small group rapidly expanded to more than 50 participants within a few days.

How to do laughter yoga

The format of the session was the turn-by-turn telling of jokes or anecdotes, but within days the stock of good jokes was depleted and participants began to complain.

Rather than abort the experiment Dr. Kataria dropped the telling of jokes altogether as he noticed that even when the anecdote being shared was not funny, it took just one person laughing to get the whole group going.

He experimented with this idea of laughing for no reason and it worked well.

Playful behaviours naturally ensued, and participants started to create their own laughter exercises: You pantomime a simple movement of daily life (e.g. shaking hands to greet someone) and simply laugh along.

His wife Madhuri Kataria, a Hatha Yoga practitioner, suggested breathing exercises be included to build upon the yoga connection of laughter.

A journalist heard of this unusual gathering of adults behaving like children – Laughter Yoga has a very strong focus on the expression of childlike playfulness – in a public space and wrote an article about it in the local newspaper.

Introduction

Laughter Yoga is a unique concept, and anyone can take part. First of all, there is no need for humour or jokes and you don’t need to feel happy. Happiness depends on happenings, whereas real joy is a feeling and emotion of contentment and wellbeing.

Often when I tell people that I am a Laughter Yoga Practitioner they feel the need to explain that they are always laughing and even recount examples of how they were at an event or with friends etc and they just couldn’t stop laughing. Whilst, I hope we can all recall such times, the practice of Laughter Yoga is uniquely different. As mentioned above, humour and jokes are not required. Instead, we simply just laugh for no reason.

Based on scientific evidence that the body cannot differentiate between real and simulated laughter, we can gain all the benefits that laughing brings. In Laughter Yoga, the laughter soon becomes real as we move around, make eye contact and have a willingness to participate in simple playful exercises. The Yoga element is based around deep breathing exercises and grounding and relaxation techniques.

Why Practice Laughter Yoga?

Up until 2020, Dr. Madan Kataria only allowed Certified Laughter Yoga Leader Trainings to be facilitated in person. Perhaps few things feel as delicious as a good belly laugh — your head thrown back, eyes squinted shut with tears of mirth leaking down your cheeks, contagious guffaws coming straight from your abdomen in deep breaths that warm you all over.

It definitely feels good to laugh, but did you know there are a surprising number of health benefits, too? Laughing has been shown to relieve pain, boost your mood, and reduce stress. Since April is National Stress Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time talk about the stress-releasing power of laughter.

Interestingly, the body doesn’t seem to know the difference between simulated laughter or spontaneous laughter. Studies have shown you reap the same health benefits of laughter – your body is still going to respond to laughter by releasing endorphins and lowering stress hormones – whether your laughter is genuine or intentional.

In fact, there is an alternative mind/body practice based on the concept, called “laughter yoga,” which is steadily gaining in popularity across the globe. The practice is a combination of laughing exercises and yoga breathing, often held in a group setting.

What is Laughter Yoga?

Workshops are taught by certified laughter yoga instructors who guide students through a series of exercises that call for forceful laughing. It’s a surprisingly reliable delivery system that allows laughter to be prescribed in order to realize the health benefits.

Laughter yoga is not about laughing at others or at jokes — through a combination of deep breathing, deep laughing and physical movement, laughter yoga seeks to create harmony between the mind and body.

The “laugh prescription” exercises enable everyone to laugh, even those who are serious, introverted or who may feel uncomfortable being funny. This forceful, intentional laughing often turns into real, organic laughter during the exercises (after all, laughter is often described as “infectious” for a reason).

Laughter yoga began in the 1990s by Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor who came across various scientific studies that revealed a connection between laughter and mental and physical wellness. Convinced that laughter was a necessary tool for dealing with the stress of modern life, he developed breathing exercises and techniques that were similar to childlike role-playing in order to stimulate laughter in his patients.

Once laughter yoga was born, Dr. Kataria launched the first Laughter Club in his neighborhood in Mumbai, India. There are now thousands of Laughter Clubs in more than one hundred countries around the world.

Here are the scientifically proven benefits of laughter.

1. Boosts Your Immune System

Laughter boosts the immune system by decreasing stress hormones and increasing immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Laughter also stimulates the lymph system.

2. Lowers Stress

Laughter releases a rush of stress-busting hormones like epinephrine and dopamine. A good, hearty laugh from the belly also oxygenates your body and provides an emotional and physical release, removing tension and leaving your body relaxed.

I always sneak in one laughter yoga exercise into every yoga class I teach. Why?

Firstly, because it’s a lot of fun. Laughter Yoga (Hasya Yoga) is prepping the body and mind for happiness. I mean come on, it doesn’t get much better than that.

What is laughter yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a relatively new form of exercise described by some as ‘internal jogging’.

The activity is seen as a form of physical exercise through prolonged voluntary laughter.

It is said that the act of making yourself laugh provides the same physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter.

One practitioner claims this is because “the mind does not know that we’re faking it.”

How do you do it and what are the benefits?

Laughter yoga sessions generally start with gentle warm-up techniques which include stretching, chanting, clapping, eye contact and body movement.

These help to break down inhibitions and encourage a sense of playfulness.

Breathing exercises are used to prepare the lungs for laughter, followed by a series of ‘laughter exercises’ that combine the method of acting and visualization techniques with playfulness.

Laughter exercises are interspersed with breathing exercises.

Laughing is an easy way to strengthen all immune functions, bring more oxygen to the body and brain, foster positive feelings and improve interpersonal skills.

It is said that just twenty minutes of laughter is sufficient to develop fully physiological benefits.

How to do laughter yoga

Where does the practice originate?

The concept of laughter yoga was created in India in the mid-1990s.

In March 1995, Dr Madan Kataria, a GP from Mumbai decided to write an article called “Laughter – the best medicine”.

The outcome of his research for this article surprised him greatly as decades of scientific research had already proved that laughter had a documented positive impact as form of complementary preventive and therapeutic medicine.

In particular he was impressed by the findings of Norman Cousins, an American journalist who was diagnosed in 1964 with a degenerative disease and given at best 6 months to live.

It was reported that Cousins had managed to heal himself completely using laughter as his main form of therapy.

Being a man of action, Dr. Kataria decided to try this out for himself and went to his local park on March 13th, 1995, with the intention of starting a “laughter club” where people would share jokes.

Somehow he managed to motivate four people to laugh with him that day.

This small group rapidly expanded to more than 50 participants within a few days.

How to do laughter yoga

The format of the session was the turn-by-turn telling of jokes or anecdotes, but within days the stock of good jokes was depleted and participants began to complain.

Rather than abort the experiment Dr. Kataria dropped the telling of jokes altogether as he noticed that even when the anecdote being shared was not funny, it took just one person laughing to get the whole group going.

He experimented with this idea of laughing for no reason and it worked well.

While this form of yoga was originally practised only in the Himalayas, it has now become common everywhere

Yoga is an important tool that many people use to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. And while there are many forms and types of asanas, a particular branch of yoga is laughter or laughing yoga — which you may have seen people practise in parks, in groups. Grand Master Akshar, a philanthropist, spiritual master, lifestyle coach, yoga-preneur, and author explains what this form of yoga is all about, and how it can benefit you.

“Laughing yoga is an ancient practice, originally started by the Nath tradition and is the Nath lineage. It takes its roots from the yogic philosophy of ‘Hasiba Kheliba Dariba Dhyan’. ‘At one time or another, most of us have tried to improve our health. We may have started a diet or exercise programme to improve our physical health, or some kind of psychological intervention to improve our mood and thought processes. If so, we probably soon realised that positive change requires sustained effort over time.

So when you hear about Laughter Yoga, an exercise that is simple, easy and (wait for it!) enjoyable, it can be difficult not to feel rather sceptical. For instance sceptics know –

1. You need to select an appropriate exercise for the benefit you want to achieve.

The term ‘yoga’ in Laughter Yoga refers to the yoga type of breathing, ‘Pranayama’, in which the exhaled breath is longer than the inhaled breath. There are no yogic type poses, and no knowledge of yoga is required.
