While the past year has made some of us alter our makeup routines by cutting down on products and opting for more natural looks, it’s also given us the freedom to experiment with our makeup. The truth is, for beauty lovers, makeup can be therapy, and an outlet for some much needed “me time.”
That was the case for influencer Doralys Britto. Despite being at home more than ever, she wanted to wear makeup as a way to express her creativity. While she was still wearing makeup just as often as before, the time at home led her to experiment with her products.
“The pandemic definitely gave me an opportunity to tune in with myself and use my favorite products in a more creative and versatile way,” she says. “I started using products that were meant for one thing and applying them to other parts of my face.”
It was during this experimentation that she discovered that her favorite lipstick could be used in multiple ways in order to get effortless, quick and beautiful monochromatic makeup looks. Rather than reaching for several different products to create a look with a uniform color palette, Doralys found that her L’Oréal Paris lipstick was all she really needed.
“I love my L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Les Nus Intense Nude Lipstick. I use it on my lips, but I also started using it on my cheeks and nose for my natural ‘signature’ sun-kissed look,” she says. “I also love applying it on my eyelids for a romantic vibe and a pop of color.”
How To Multitask Your Lipstick
The Les Nus lipsticks are non-drying, smooth in texture and ultra pigmented, making them perfect for application in multiple areas of the face. Follow these three simple steps to shake up your makeup and turn your new favorite lipstick into a multitasking beauty must-have.
How To Use Colour Riche Les Nus Intense Nude Lipstick On Your Lids
Start by lightly patting the lipstick straight onto your eyelids, building up the color until you’re satisfied with the payoff. Then, using an eyeshadow brush, blend the color into your crease until the outer edge looks smooth and diffused, leaving you with a simple, one-and-done eyeshadow look.
How To Use Colour Riche Les Nus Intense Nude Lipstick On Your Cheeks
To add color to your cheeks, apply the lipstick from the tip and blend in circular motions with your fingers or a damp makeup sponge like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Blend Artist Foundation Blender. Start at the apples of your cheeks and blend upward towards your temples for a lifted look.
How To Use Colour Riche Les Nus Intense Nude Lipstick On Your Nose
A trick to make your makeup appear more cohesive is to apply a bit of your blush color to the bridge of your nose to more evenly distribute color throughout your face. Using your fingers or a sponge, tap on a small bit of the lipstick on the bridge of your nose and blend out until you have a natural-looking radiant finish.

The other day, Den and I were talking about what we thought was a botched cosmetic campaign. The advertisement was for an all-around (eyes, cheeks and lip) product. The idea was there, but it felt like the execution was lacking and the makeup looked clown-like, which we were sure was not the goal of the campaign.
I’ve always said that trying to do “less” with makeup is harder than going full glam. No makeup makeup looks and monochromatic looks are so understated that one minor mishap can be easily amplified due to the fact that there is nothing else to distract from the error. With the growing popularity of multi-use products, let’s get comfy with monochromatic makeup and learn the right way to pull off that one-product face!
Tip #1: Take care of your eyes
For this tutorial I will be using one of my faves, the Chanel Cream Blush in 63 Revelation (P1,850 for 2.5g, Rustan’s.) I like using this blush for one-product faces because it doesn’t really stain my eyelids. Many long-wear lip and cheek balms will have pigments that can stain the skin. At best, you will just have a slightly pinkish lid for a few days, but at worst, that lingering stain may cause an allergic reaction. Usually, bright red balms will stain while cream-to-powder finishes will not stain.
If you want to try out a product around your eyes that isn’t explicitly labeled as eye safe, you can check the ingredient list against the US FDA list of approved ingredients in cosmetics. This list indicates which cosmetic ingredients are considered safe to use on the eye area, as some pigments may be safe for general makeup use but not near the eyes. If you aren’t sure and want to play it safe, a great option is the Ellana Minerals Multipurpose Color Cream (P299 for 2.5g, ellanacosmetics.com) as they are specifically designed for use on the eyes, lids, and cheeks!
Tip #2: Pick a safe color and finish
I like Chanel’s Revelation because it is a warm, medium pink that suits my skin tone. As a general rule, fairer skin tones can get away with lighter, brighter colors, while deeper skin tones can get away with deeper, bronzy-er colors. Far be it for me to dissuade people from experimenting with makeup and using any shade they want, but if you are not an expert on color theory, these are suggestions that don’t require much thinking and don’t allow much room for error.
Cream products are my favorite to use for all-around faces because not only are they easy to apply to all face parts (I mean, I guess you can find a way to stick powder on your lips), creams are also very easy to blend. If you find stick balms easier, that could work also! Just remember that the key to a successful monochromatic look is a seamless blend.
Tip #3: Play with your color profile
Because you are using only one color, try to play around with its other characteristics. Technically, monochromatic means a singular (mono) intensity of color (chroma.) However, doing a bright pink eye, with an equally bright pink cheek AND an equally pink lip can look unfocused and even clown-like.
To keep your monochromatic look from looking flat and haphazardly placed, I suggest playing around with the intensities of the color on your face. In this look, I put the most intense level of pink to cover my darker lips, with a slightly lighter lid, and the lightest deposit on my cheek. The different levels of pink all still look like the same pink, but the different depths of color make it look more wearable and interesting.
A monochromatic look can be intimidating, but these tips are sure to make things easier! Using just one product can be a huge time saver and is more cost efficient, but apart from finding a single color that you’d love to wear on your eyes, lips, and cheeks at the same time, you have to be sure that you apply it correctly to achieve a truly flattering look.
Monochromatic makeup is a great way to play with color by only using one tone or shade. Get a bold, stunning look or an ultra-feminine one with one color.
I love peach because it’s as feminine as pink, but is bolder and more vibrant perfect for a makeup look as stylized as this. Master the art of color with this easy peach monochromatic makeup tutorial!

Step 1: Prep Your Skin for Flawless Monochromatic Makeup
A great primer will keep your makeup looking fresh all day and will increase your foundation’s wear time. If you have acne scars or blemishes, a primer with a mint green tint will cover that up for you, a must for a monochromatic effect. Whether or you opt for an illuminating primer or a mattifying one depends on today’s mood.
Step 2: Apply an Eyeshadow Base
The eyes are crucial to the monochromatic look, so make sure to prep your lids especially if they’re oily or if you have hooded eyes. Apply the Benefit Cosmetics Air Patrol all over the lid and up towards the brow bone, set with your Anastasia Beverly Hills sheer white eyeshadow in the shade Blanc to create a blank canvas.
Tip: If you haven’t found your holy grail eye primer yet, you can use your favorite concealer and set with a touch of transparent setting powder.
Step 3: Sweep Your Transition Peach Shadow on Your Crease
Sweep the Makeup Geek Peach eyeshadow in Smoothie along your creases, going above a bit to cover the sheer white shade you applied earlier. If you’re not sure where the crease is, imagine that you’re painting above the eyeball. You should be able to feel it as you’re sweeping back and forth.
Step 4: Apply Your Deeper Peach Shade Over Your Lids
Apply the Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadow in L’Orange all over your lids, this shade will be the hero of your monochromatic makeup look. Start on your crease, moving above your crease before bringing it down to your lash line.
Step 5: Tap on Your Deepest Peach Shade to Your Lash Line for Monochromatic Makeup
Avoid looking flat by defining your lash line with your Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadow in Fudge. The touch of tan or brown will define your eyes while staying in theme with the monochromatic makeup look. The shade should look as natural as possible, so tan or fudge shades will work great, while coffee shades will leave you with a smoky eye.
Step 6: Put on Your Foundation and Concealer
Now you can tap on the Estèe Lauder Double Wear Light foundation! Monochromatic makeup in no way means flat – get a dewy foundation if you want to glow with the sun. If you apply foundation afterwards you’ll erase all evidence of eyeshadow fallout, but you can do this before eye makeup if that’s your jam.
Dot on your Nars Creamy Concealer to mask blemishes and to brighten your under eye area.
Step 7: Set, Bronze, and Contour
Set your foundation and concealer with a combination of the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder and BareMinerals barePRO Powder Foundation. Go easy on the Mac Bronzer because this peach monochromatic makeup look is all about looking soft, so we don’t want harsh lines anywhere. Peach is already a warm tone, so going heavy-handed might make you look sunburnt!
Step 8: Tap on Some Peach Blush for Monochromatic Makeup
Another key point for the monochromatic makeup is the blush, so choose a natural peach shade that resembles your eyeshadow tone like the BellaPierre Cosmetics Mineral Blush. Use a loose powder brush or a fluffy blush brush to make sure you’re getting just a whisper of color. Monochromatic makeup is supposed to melt seamlessly into one another.
Step 9: Highlight!
Highlight the top of your cheekbones and the highest points of your face with the Becca Cosmetics Champagne Pop Highlighter. Champagne tones are as natural and as glowy as you can get, and they’re perfect for all skin tones!
Step 10: Smoke Out Your Lower Lash Line With Your Second Peach Eyeshadow
Go back to your Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyeshadow in L’Orange and sweep beneath your lower lash line. You can soften the look if the color is too harsh by mixing it with a light peach shade, you can use the MakeupGeek Peach Eyeshadow in Smoothie.
Finish off your eyes with the IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara, or cap off with feathery Demi Wispies false lashes! To bolden your monochromatic makeup, apply some House of Lashes lower lashes on your lower lash line as well!
Step 11: Paint on a Peach Lippie for Monochromatic Makeup
If you don’t have a peach shade, grab an orange and a pink and mastermind your own peach blend. The key point to remember is that you have to get as close to peach as your makeup allows you. Because our eye makeup is matte, let’s bring a healthy glow and luminosity with a juicy lip.
For this look, create your own shade by combining NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in London and the OFRA Cosmetics Liquid Lipstick in Rio.

Mac has made matching your eyeshadow and lipstick even easier
Say goodbye to focusing on either your eyeshadow or your lipstick. The trend for bold, monochromatic make-up is back.
In case you’re unfamiliar, monochrome make-up is the art of matching the shades you wear on your eyes and lips, and can sometimes mean wearing the same colour blush as well. It’s particularly popular on the red carpet when celebrities want their make-up to complement their gowns, with everyone from Rihanna to Margot Robbie embracing the tonal trend.
The increase in the popularity of the monochromatic look is also likely to be the result of demand for multitasking products, as everyone searches for easier and quicker make-up application to fit in with their busy lives. And, while in the past we’ve been advised to define just our eyes or lips, the trend allows you to do both; whether that’s subtly or boldly is up to you.
Our favourite hardworking products include Giorgio Armani’s liquid A-Blush, RMS Beauty’s Peach Luminiser and Nars’ The Multiple, though we’re also not immune to just applying our favourite lipstick to our cheeks too.
In excellent timing, Mac has now launched an entire monochrome collection, which means us mere mortals might never have to struggle to find complementary eye and lip colours again.
According to celebrity makeup artist Joseph Carrillo, the key to pulling it off is applying products in the same color shade to your eyes, lips, and cheeks. It’s that simple. ‘It really is a go-to look for me’, he shares with ishonest. ‘I love it for red-carpet events, it’s chic and timeless.’
Monochrome makeup works well on all skin tones, and the beauty of it is, any color palette works it’s completely your choice. Keeping the color tones in the same family ensures that the makeup is synchronized, and no facial feature stands out more than the other.
If you’re thinking about trying out monochrome makeup and want to glam it up a tad, Carrillo recommends adding texture. Glittery lipsticks and creamy eyeshadows are a great choice, and again, as long they’re in the same shade, they can still be part of your monochrome look.
But the eyeshadow color you apply is what will really set off your monochrome makeup, so make sure to pick out a shade you love and build the color palette for your other facial features around it.
Below, Carrillo shares tips for achieving his favorite monochromatic eye makeup looks.
Red makeup always makes a statement and this look is no different. One swipe of the intense color immediately enhances the eye and cheek area.
‘For this look, I used a small blending brush and started with a wash of MAC No Shame Glow Play Blush on the inner corner of the eye and around the crease, whilst leaving the eyelid bare’, says Carrillo.
The makeup artist then used a larger blending brush to apply MAC Heat Index Glow Play Blush to the outer corner of the eye, fading the color out to the temples and just above the cheekbone.
‘To finish off, I used a small beauty blender and applied more MAC No Shame Glow Play Blush on top of where I applied MAC Heat Index Glow Play Blush. I blended the colors seamlessly to create a monochrome finish.’
For this look, Carrillo used a nude color palette to add subtle dimension to the face. ‘To start off, I applied NYX Proof It! Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer, because I did not want to lose the shine of the color eyeshadow I was going to add’, he explains.
Following this, the makeup artist blended MAC Pro Eye Palette: The Dame from the crease of the eyelid all the way to the brow bone. ‘Once I achieved my desired blend, I added a wash of color to the eyelid, applied mascara and used the same color theme to contour the face.’
This intense blue monochromatic eye makeup is an immediate attention grabber and looks great on warm skin tones. ‘I started off this look by applying Smash Box Hydrating Eye Primer, if you have oily eyelids, this primer works wonders, says Carrillo.’ The makeup artist then applied MAC The Bad Girl Cream Color Eye shadow, using a flat brush.
‘Following this, I used a blending brush to fade the color towards the nose and all the way up to the brow bone’, he shares. ‘Lastly, I applied Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm on top of the cream eye shadow to add sheen.’
