How to dye chiffon fabric

Crafty Ventures of a Creative Renegade

I had a fabulous time as a bridesmaid with this group of awesome ladies. We looked lovely in our bright pistachio dresses of different styles.

But after the wedding, how could I wear this dress without my maiden counterparts? I wanted to wear my dress for another occasion yet with a twist of change so I purchased Rit dye from Michael’s.

The color on the bottle is the green shade I was going for.

Let’s Dye this Polyester Chiffon!

Step 1. Find a pot large enough to fit and stir the dress in. Fill with water and bring to simmer. The water temperature needs to be about 180 deg F.

Step 2. Set up work area in kitchen cover counters with plastic.

Step 3. Layout dying ingredients and supplies:

  • 2 bottles of Rit dye
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • splash of dish wash liquid
  • gloves
  • stirring tool you don’t care to get stained (I used disposable chopsticks)
  • measuring cup

Step 4. Soak dress in warm water. Add all dying ingredients in pot and dip in a paper towel to test the color.

Step 5. Add dress to pot of dye. Keep water at a simmer and stir dress often to distribute dye evenly for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Step 6. Pull the dress out of the pot and rinse out the excess dye with at first warm gradually to cool water. Hang to dry.Viola! A dress tinted for another occasion.

The green wasn’t as dark as I hoped it would be because polyester does not take dye well. I decided to test it out at the next formal occasion I attended anyways.

The dress turned out to compliment the orange color of the bridesmaid dresses at the wedding I attended. I got compliments for the pop green color that it was and was able to say that I dyed it that way for only $6 of dye! It was also very hot weather that day (113 deg F). The color didn’t melt off at all so the dye officially stays.

  1. Dip dress in dye bath with the outside out to be sure that the outside will dye evenly. The inside layer can get blotchy.
  2. Rinse ALL the excess dye out using delicate laundry detergent. Otherwise, the excess dye will run and make blotchy patterns on the dress as it hang dries.
  3. Keep all food related items and clothing you don’t want stained away from dye and rinse work areas.
  4. Work in a well ventilated space.

If you can then I’m on my way to purchasing some silk chiffon sari’s. I know there is a polyester dye now that I found at Dick Blicks, so really anything can be dyed, but when something says silk, I know this could be harsh. I would like to dye silk chiffon with silk dye and I’m not sure it will take. ANYONE.

Hello, any dyers our there this morning?

when all else fails, google it, so this is what I found out, incase anyone else was curious. lol The person specified I isn’t me, it’s someone on the internet that does special dying. The internet is absolutely a library of knowledge!

Silk chiffon can be dyed in hot water, or with steaming after the dye is applied, using acid dyes, or it can be dyed at room temperature using fiber reactive dye and soda ash.

A great many fiber artists steam their acid-dyed silk chiffon, to set the dye, without a problem. In fact, this method is preferably for those who wish to preserve as much of the sheen of the silk fabric as possible.

I personally prefer to use fiber reactive dye on silk, using soda ash, because I dye cotton more frequently, and the same dye recipes can be used with silk as with cotton. However, it should be noted that the high pH of the soda ash techniques alters the feel for the silk a little. It tends to make it softer and less shiny. If this is a problem for you, I recommend that you use acid dyes, instead. Fiber reactive dyes can be also used as acid dyes if an acid dye recipe is followed, such as Dharma’s “Tie-dyeing silk in a microwave” recipe.

You can also use special silk paints. Paint is not dye, because it contains a binder (a sort of glue) to attach the pigment to the fiber. This can make the fabric feel a little less soft; however, high quality silk paints do not affect the hand of the fabric very much.

Silk Chiffon 8mm 45″ wide is now available in about thirty colors! Why? Because not every canvas has to be white.

An elegant, sheer fiber with a soft beautiful drape and a crepe like texture. Takes dyes exceptionally well reflecting strong, deep colors. Very easy to dye and paint and responds well to all painting styles and techniques. Fiber is ideal for floaty scarves, shawls and wispy gowns. Like a feather floating on the wind. The essence of silk. Paint, dye, enjoy!

ALSO: Colored swatches vary from monitor to monitor and may not exactly match actual fabric. There may be slight variations in fabrics from dyelot to dyelot. This is normal. Samples are available. These fabrics are dyed with Acid Dyes, and should be washed in cool to lukewarm water or dry cleaned. Dyed fabrics can bleed! Pre-washing or treating the fabric with something like our Dharma Dye Fixative is a good idea if you want to ensure that there is no dye bleed.

Discharging: Several folks have been asking if the new colors discharge. Since they are new, we haven’t tested them yet, but we will be, with Discharge Paste and with DeColourant. But what we can immediately say on the subject, which any discharge artist should know, is that all colors are going to vary, from discharging to almost white, to nothing, and some will simply lighten, while others will change color. Your results will also depend on the discharging chemical you use. All of them are safe on silk EXCEPT BLEACH. So when results need to be a certain way, you MUST TEST! Discharging can often be unpredictable. We will publish a list of our results in a few weeks.

In this regard, can I dye a chiffon dress?

Chiffon is a light, airy fabric usually made of polyester or silk. While polyester chiffon cannot be dyed, silk chiffon takes dye beautifully. You can use all-purpose drugstore dye with silk chiffon, but for the best results and brightest color without dulling the sheen of the silk, acid dyes are ideal.

Furthermore, how do you dye polyester chiffon? Let’s Dye this Polyester Chiffon!

  1. Set up work area in kitchen cover counters with plastic.
  2. Soak dress in warm water. Add all dying ingredients in pot and dip in a paper towel to test the color.
  3. Add dress to pot of dye.
  4. Pull the dress out of the pot and rinse out the excess dye with at first warm gradually to cool water.

Similarly, you may ask, what fabrics can be dyed?

In my experience, natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk, wool and ramie are the most dyeable. Most fabric blends will work too, including synthetics like rayon and nylon-fiber blends that are at least 60 percent dyeable fiber.

Can I dye a polyester chiffon dress?

Chiffon is a light, airy fabric usually made of polyester or silk. While polyester chiffon cannot be dyed, silk chiffon takes dye beautifully. You can use all-purpose drugstore dye with silk chiffon, but for the best results and brightest color without dulling the sheen of the silk, acid dyes are ideal.

  • Learn the difference between natural and synthetic fibres
  • Find out why some synthetic blends may not dye, while others will do so happily
  • Solve the greatest fabric mystery: what is viscose?

From Acrilan to Zibeline, the world of fabrics is as varied as it is confusing. It’s a place where natural fibres hang out – and occasionally blend – with synthetic ones. Where wool, cotton and spandex rub shoulders and where people are constantly asking, “What on Earth is viscose…and can I dye it?”

Navigating through the chaos, with its wild array of options, can be daunting – particularly if you’re new to dyeing. Not to worry, you don’t have to memorise every fabric known to man to know how to dye it. There’s a much simpler way:

The three principles of dyeing

Almost all of your fabric dyeing questions can be answered by three principles:

  1. Synthetic fabrics cannot be dyed (at least not domestically)
  2. Most natural fabrics fall into two categories:
    a. Able to be dyed in every way
    b. Only able to be dyed by hand
  3. Blended fabrics follow both rules

In other words, you have to establish whether a fabric is natural or synthetic or – in the case of blended fabrics – how much of it is natural, to understand whether it can be dyed successfully.

Need a little more clarity? Your wish is our command:

Which natural fabrics can I dye?

As a group, natural fabrics are very accommodating to permanent colour. The vast majority can be dyed with great results. The most common of these are:

  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Viscose
  • Denim
  • Flax
  • Jute
  • Ramie
  • Canvas

A few natural fabrics prefer to be washed by hand and do better when coloured with hand dye. These include the likes of silk, wool, cashmere and mohair.

For the most part, however, natural fabrics are the ideal dye candidate so you can dye your cotton shirts, canvas shoes and linen anything with unbridled abandon.

Which synthetic blends can I dye?

Mixes of natural and synthetic fabrics make up a significant part of 21 st century textiles. The most common blends found on clothing and home textile labels include:

  • Polyester/cotton
  • Polyester/viscose
  • Silk/linen

While a great many can be successfully machine dyed, not all blends were created equal. The challenge is how to tell which ones can be dyed and what the results might be. Luckily, this is easy – it comes down to ratios.

Synthetic fibres reject domestic dyes so in any blend, it is up to the natural fibres to pick up the colour. The larger the synthetic component, the less dye gets picked up, which results in a lighter (or more diluted) shade. For example, if you want to machine dye a white cardigan navy blue and it is 69% cotton, 19% polyester and 12% viscose, it will work beautifully. The end colour will just be slightly less concentrated than the colour on the pack.

When there is too much synthetic fibre in a blend, however, the dye becomes ineffective. For this reason, DYLON recommends not dyeing any fabric in which the synthetic element is greater than 50%. Everything else – from trousers to curtains to throws – is up for grabs and can produce wonderful results.

Which synthetic fabrics can I dye?

This is a trick question. The answer is: none. Synthetic fabrics cannot be dyed with either DYLON Dye – they just won’t hold the colour. In case you want to identify synthetic fibres (so you know what to avoid), some of the most common ones are:

  • Goretex
  • Lycra
  • Nylon
  • Polyester
  • Spandex

What on Earth is viscose?

Interesting story – viscose is a bit of an enigma. Technically it is classified as a “semi-synthetic fibre”. Okay. Wait, what? That’s just a fancy way of saying that the fabric is synthetically made from natural substances. Regardless of the semantics, however, it lives comfortably alongside natural fabrics. Its natural core loves pigment, so it can be dyed to full intensity with DYLON dye.

Here we include tips on how to dye polyester clothing with Fibrecrafts Disperse Dyes and Jacquard iDye Poly Dyes.

Things to Consider when Dyeing Polyester Clothes

  1. Firstly you need to be absolutely certain about the type of fabric and select a dye which will work on it. Polyester has to be dyed using Disperse dyes in boiling water. These dyes are formulated to dye polyester or nylon but will not dye natural fibres such as cotton thread that may have been used to sew the garment.
  2. Patterns, stains, logos, bleach marks, and faded or worn patches may still be discernible after dyeing, even if dark coloured dyes are used.
  3. The base colour of the fabric will affect the final colour. Understanding colour theory will help you to understand what the final results will be. For example, dyeing yellow fibres blue will result in a shade of green. In addition, the end colour of the chosen dye colour will vary by how much dye is used and the length of time the fabric is in the dye bath.
  4. The fabric needs to be prepared for dyeing. This means that starches, sizing or finishes need to be removed from the fabric.

Dyeing Polyester Clothes that have been previously dyed

Fabric that has been dyed yellow will turn to a shade of green if it is dyed with a blue colour. The shade of green will vary depending on the shade of yellow and blue that are combined.

Polyester is a popular fabric for designers because pleats and shapes can be fixed in the fabric with heat. Dyeing polyester garments, such as the dress below, may alter the heat-set shapes because the Disperse dye needs boiling water to make the colour permanent.

Mixing Dye Colours

How to dye chiffon fabric

This tie-dye shows how combining colours will create other colours. It is cotton fabric which has been dyed using Procion MX dyes.

Yellow and blue have combined to make green, blue and pink have combined to make purple, and yellow and pink have combined to make red. This colour theory also applies to disperse dyes when used on polyester and acid dyes when used on silk or wool.

If you would like to experiment with disperse dyes, undyed polyester is available from the website. The fabric is suitable for heat-moulding and 3D shibori techniques, or it can be painted using heat transfer paints which are made from disperse dyes.

Which Dyes for Polyester Fabric?

If you would like to dye polyester, George Weil sell Fibrecrafts Disperse Dyes and Jacquard iDye Poly Dyes. You will find colour charts on the website which are provided as an indication of colour.

Please note that as there are many factors to consider when dyeing ready-made polyester garments the end results are beyond our control.

How to dye chiffon fabric

Gaby J Photography

If you’ve ever been a bridesmaid and shopped for a bridesmaid dress at a salon, you’ve heard chatter about dye lots—and what you’ve heard has probably varied a lot. “Most fabrics used for bridesmaid dresses (such as polyester chiffon, tulle, or mesh) are spun in a neutral ‘greige’ color,” says Grace Lee, founder and CEO of Birdy Grey. “The bulk fabric is then dyed in large batches (we’re talking hundreds of yards at a time!) according to a specific color formulation. The vat that the fabric is dyed in is assigned a unique code called a dye lot.”

What Is a Dye Lot?

A dye lot is a record or code indicating what dye vat a fabric or trim was colored in. The code, oftentimes numeric, is used to identify the batch that it came from, and every batch is assigned a different dye lot code.

Some salons insist it’s the only way to ensure those colored frocks match perfectly. Some brides care and will insist that their bridesmaids all order their dresses at the same time and through the same salon. And some might just choose a dress and a color, then let you shop around to find your size and a price that makes you comfortable (hello, resale sites and sample sales!).

So the question is, do dye lots really matter? Is it something brides need to add to their list of things to worry about? We spoke to experts from some of the top bridesmaid dress companies to get the low-down on dye lots and the steps you can take to ensure a beautifully coordinated bridal party.

Why Dye Lots Matter

“Since bridesmaids need to take group photos and stand near one another during a wedding ceremony, it is definitely noticeable when two people standing next to one another got dresses from significantly different dye lots and have a different shade of the same color dress on,” says Ranu Coleman, chief marketing officer at Azazie.

Most designers go through multiple dye lots a year for certain fabrics and colors. “If an exact color match is what you want for your bridal party, it is very important to have dresses cut in the same dye lot (on the same order) however small the color differences in color may be,” says Janine Diaz, fabric coordinator for Jenny Yoo.

Some larger brands have systems in place to ensure all bridesmaid dresses are the same color, regardless of when or where they’re ordered. “David’s Bridal has a proprietary color creation process at our Color Center, which has been in place for over 15 years,” says Paula Arruda, director of production at David’s Bridal. “That means bridesmaids can order dresses at different times and in different locations across the country without worrying if the colors will match—because our color experts are overseeing color creation and ensuring color-matching from start to finish. It gives our brides and their bridal party more flexibility and helps reduce stress in the process.”

Dye Lot FAQs

Our experts answer the most frequently asked questions about dye lots for bridesmaid dresses.

Are there certain colors that are more impacted by dye lots?

“Neutrals and grays are more difficult to keep consistent because they are the combination of many different hues,” says Arruda. “Any small change in the recipe or dying process can be very noticeable.” And Lee agrees. “Lighter, dustier shades, such as pale pinks, roses, or mauves, are definitely more difficult to shade-match than darker hues, such as burgundy, emerald, or navy,” she says.

Are some fabrics more susceptible to differences in dye lots?

“Fragile textures like chiffon or tulle do not necessarily affect color,” says Arruda. “Laces, however, can be a bit more difficult because sometimes they are a blend of different fiber types, such as rayon and polyester, which requires different types of dyes to be used at the same time in the same bath. At the David’s Bridal Color Center, we get trials of each color in the fabrications that they come in to ensure the colors match across silk, lace, organza, meshes, chiffons, etc.”

When in doubt, choose a light fabric instead of one that’s soft and opaque.

“Generally, the more opaque the fabric, the easier it is to see a color difference. Airy tulle dresses may not be as obvious in color difference. Solid crepes, on the other hand, are flat and opaque, so dye lots are more noticeable,” says Diaz. “If several chiffon dresses were cut in different dye lots, you may not see the shading differences in the skirt, but it could be noticeable when the fabric pools at your feet.”

Matching colors between fabrics can also be a challenge “Different fabrics pick the same color formulations differently,” says Lee. “For example, if we used the exact same blush pink formulation on chiffon and mesh, chiffon will render paler, and mesh will appear more vibrant. There’s definitely an art to shade-matching between fabrics!”

Is there a similar concept that applies to patterned fabrics?

“Our prints are controlled for color in the same way as solids, although they tend to be more forgiving. This is due to the fact that patterns often can distract the eye from specific color matching, and instead, the eye is fixated on the design and placement of the pattern,” Arruda explains.

Dye Lot Tips

In the market for matching dresses, but hoping to help your bridesmaids out with cost and availability? “Leniency between color shading really depends on the bride and her party,” Diaz says. “Although we do recommend parties to order their dresses all at once, if the members of the party need to order separately, we suggest ordering all dresses from the same designer and their certified retailers, so that knockoffs—and off dye lots—are better avoided.”

Look for quality control

“For a matching bridal party, ensure you’re purchasing dresses from a brand that prioritizes quality control. (For example, if one of Birdy Grey’s dye lots are off, our QC team rejects the fabric, and it won’t see the light of day.) If it’s the photos you’re concerned about, most photographers apply filters or presets to their images, masking the look of slight color inconsistencies.”

Stick with bridesmaid dress companies

And Coleman urges brides to stick with bridesmaid dress companies, even if they’re going the more affordable route. “Even at a lower price point, we at Azazie still specialize in custom-made dresses and understand the dying and matching process. Fast-fashion companies are entering the bridal space, but they may not be equipped with the process to deal with matching across dye lots.”

Go for mix-and-match looks instead

Of course, you can nix the issue altogether with a mix-and-match bridal party! “We are a big fan of this look, and we cater to it by creating styles, fabrics, and colors that can be easily blended together to make a cohesive bridal party look, without the worry of dye lot variances,” says Diaz. Adds Lee, “It’s rare that we see a bride go for full-on matchy-matchy these days. Instead, they’re opting for a mixed palette of colors and silhouettes, creating fresh color combinations and allowing bridesmaids to choose a color they find flattering!”

Dyed Fabric is NOT RETURNABLE.

Choose from these layouts or if your project requires something different we can discuss it and make a plan together that best fits your needs.

How It Works

As we have been getting more questions on our fabric dyeing services I thought I would take a minute and explain the process. Here is a generalized list of the process from start to finish:

  • Allow upto 2 weeks for small dye jobs to be completed. Large jobs may require more time.
  • We will need some information from you which will require usually many emails back and forth. We will not start a dye job without a clear understanding as to what your needs are. As dyed fabric is NOT RETURNABLE.
  • customer contacts us about fabric dyeing, this can be done by phone or email. We will discuss your needs and what you want to make with your costume dyed fabric. If we are dyeing a solid color it is not as important that we know what you are making but if you are wanting an ombre dyed fabric it is important that we discuss your project so that we can make sure that all of the colors well be seen on your finished design.
  • for ombre dyeing we will discuss with you the best method for your fabric, we want you to get the most use out of your spandex fabric as possible. We can either dye the fabric as is, we can cut it in to smaller pieces, we can mail you the white spandex and after you cut out your pattern pieces they can be mailed back to us for dyeing. There are many option!
  • After we have talked about what you are designing we will email you a sketch of the ombre to get your approval. Once approved we will get started. Different projects require different lengths of time. Most Ombre dyeing projects are not a 1 day job, they often require a few days and sometimes longer depending on the amount of fabric and the aspects of each individual job.
  • We hand dip the ombre fabrics and only dye 1 – 2 yard pieces at a time.
  • Larger dye jobs may require a deposit.
  • Dye colors vary on the color fastness so it is important to test the fabric before laundering. A mild soap and COLD WATER is recommended. NEVER USE HOT WATER ON YOUR CUSTOM DYED SPANDEX FABRICS.

Need Help Deciding How Many Colors To Pick?

Take a look at these projects below to help you best decide on the look you are going for.

  • A one colored ombre is made with one dye color and the dye bath is watered down to achieve the lighter colors, this doesn’t produce the most even effect. A one colored ombre typical as a rougher/not smooth look to it.
  • A two colored ombre using different hues of the same color gives a smoother more graceful appearance to it.
  • We can also do ombres with 3 colors.

How to dye chiffon fabric

Fabric dyes have been used for hundreds of thousands of years to help us express our creativity. Archaeologists have found that the first mention of dyeing fabric dates to 2600 BC. Until the 1850s all dyes were created from natural sources like bark, leaves, flowers, fruit, and even insects.

Extracting color and creating dyes from natural sources produces beautiful results. Unfortunately, it can be a tedious process that makes it difficult to maintain quality control. By 1900, the development of powdered synthetic dyes dominated the market, and most industrial dyes were synthetic.

Getting Ready to Dye

The very first step in successfully dyeing something at home is to identify the fiber content of the fabric. Natural fabrics like wool, cotton, linen, and silk absorb and capture dyes well as does nylon. Other synthetic fibers like polyester, spandex, olefin, acetate, and acrylics will not dye evenly unless you use a dye specially formulated for synthetic fibers. Blended fabrics like a polyester/cotton will result in a muted, heather-like dyed finish unless you use a dye formulated for synthetics.

The fabric you wish to dye should be washed to remove any soil, fabric finishes, or sizing that may be in the fabric. If the item is stained, do your best to remove the specific stains. If they remain, especially oily stains, they will affect how the dye is absorbed in that area.

For printed fabrics and bleach-spotted items, use a color remover or stripping product before you apply the new dye. This will give you a more even dye especially if you are using a light colored dye.

Estimate the weight of the fabric or items you plan to dye. Many product instructions are based on the weight of the fabric and you want to be sure to use enough dye for good results.

Gather Supplies

It is important to have all of the supplies you need ready and on hand before you begin a project. No one wants drips of dye scattered about the house as you search for something. Here’s what you need:

  • Plastic drop cloth or old vinyl tablecloth to cover the work area
  • Plastic bucket, stainless steel sink, or standard top load washing machine. Do not dye in a fiberglass or porcelain sink because they may absorb the dye
  • Rubber gloves
  • Hot water
  • Liquid or powdered dye(s)
  • Table salt or white distilled vinegar
  • Large metal spoon
  • Test fabric or paper towel
  • Chlorine bleach for clean up

Find The Perfect Plus Size Dress

The beauty of dresses is that they truly work year-round – it’s all dependent on the styling, cut and fabric of the dress. With plus size spring dresses, color and patterns are often starting to make an appearance but there’s still the potential for some chilly days, so layering something over top or even looking for a plus size floral dress with sleeves works beautifully. You can even shift that dress into summer before the weather gets too warm for a plus size summer dress with a fun floral pattern. The key in summer is staying cool, which makes a plus size sundress or even a flowy plus size summer dress a great option. Add a pair of sandals and a fun tote, and you have the perfect plus size summer outfit. With fall comes cooler weather and fun outdoor events. At Lane Bryant we don’t sacrifice style for comfort. Our plus size fall dresses are perfect throw-on-and-go items that’ll keep you cozy while attending fun fall events like farmers markets or parties. When the weather gets even chillier, a plus size winter dress can easily be layered and worn with tights for the perfect cozy chic outfit that keeps you warm in the cool winter air.
