To re-use and upcycle your old school bag doesn’t need to be either fussy nor time consuming – in this post we’ll share our best tips on how to give your backpack a personal touch with simple means.
First and foremost, you need to find that old school bag of yours (or buy a real catch at a second hand store, perhaps?)
Order one of our DIY kits here. In the kit you get everything you need – except for the bag of course! Needle, floss, soluble canvas and pattern.
When you finally got you kit, this is where the fun begins!
1. Attach the canvas on the area of your backpack that you want to spice up – the pattern fits exceptionally well to embroider around a logo for example. The pattern size is 3,5 x 3,5 inches (9 x 9 cm) with an inner size of 2.7 x 2.7 inches (7 x 7 cm)
2. Follow the instructions handed in the kit. If you’re a beginner or unsure how to do cross stitch you can read the short but super helpful guide here.
3. When you’re done with the cross stitching you simply drown the embroidered area in water and the soluble canvas will magically disappear. A more detailed description and a video tutorial on how to use soluble canvas can be found here.

How to Remove Embroidery from a Backpack
If you’re struggling with removing an embroidered logo from your current backpack, look no further than these four simple and effective solutions. Depending on the material of your backpack, you may be able to get rid of any type of embroidery using these methods.
Remove Embroidery with Seam Ripper
This technique is the most commonly used method to remove hand-made embroidery from any bag or garment. The steps in this process are also very simple to follow.
Things Required:
- Seam ripper
Tweezers or any other suitable tool for cleaning the threads left behind
The Procedure:
- Turn your bag inside out.
- Choose any corner of the embroidery and mark it as starting point.
- Hold the bag in a position that the embroidery is visible and easy to work with.
- Take the seam ripper in your free hand and start sliding it through the stitched threads with some force.
- Don’t stop the process until you have cut at least six adjoining threads.
- Turn your bag again and start pulling out the ripped threads with the help of tweezers.
- Once cleared, turn your backpack inside out and repeat the process until you are completely satisfied with the results.
Points to Remember:
- Don’t try to cut the tiny threads with scissors, as you may damage the embroidery and your bag in the process. Always use the appropriate tools.
- The embroidery work may have different thread layers, which cannot be cut in one go. So, relax and take your time to complete the task.
Remove Machine Embroidery
Machine embroideries are tough to remove without an embroidery eraser machine. If you have one that’s good, otherwise you need to get it to complete the task properly.
The Procedure:
- Turn your backpack inside out to make it easier for the tool to cut through the thinner part of the embroidery.
- If your embroidery has stabilizers, rip them first before using the eraser.
- Position the eraser nicely on the embroidery threads and slowly move it but not more than one inch.
- Repeat the process and cut the threads bit by bit. No need to hurry.
- Now take a seam ripper or use your hands and start removing the remaining threads to clean the area.
- You can also make use of a lint roller to clear the small thread pieces.
Remove Printed Embroidery
Removing printed embroidery from your backpack requires different tools and methods. Following are the two frequently used techniques, which require minimal effort on your part to do the job efficiently:
First Method:
The utensils required for this method are a chunk of cotton and cloth, nail polish remover, and a piece of wood.
The Procedure:
- Rest your embroidery on the piece of wood you have selected in a manner that it is positioned on it smoothly.
- Now take a chunk of cotton and spread it on the embroidery while taking care that the wood behind it does not slip from its place.
- It is now time to apply the nail polish remover to the cotton. Take a sufficient quantity of the polish and pour it onto the cotton until it is completely soaked in it.
- Take the piece of fabric you have chosen and spread it over the soaked cotton. Now have a break for around 10 minutes so that the embroidery observes the liquid from the cotton.
- After the short 10-minute pause, remove the cloth and the cotton and check whether the embroidery is completely soaked with the nail polish remover. If yes, go to the next step.
- Now immerse a fresh piece of cotton in the nail polish remover and begin rubbing the printed design with full but smooth force.
- You may require few more pieces of cotton and about 30 minutes or more for rubbing to see the desired results.
- Once the design is removed, you will still notice its marks on the surface. These are stains left behind by nail polish remover. Just air dry your backpack and the marks are gone as well.
- Now you are ready to carry your backpack anywhere with confidence.
Second Method:
To complete this procedure you will be required to arrange any heat-activated glue, an iron, and paper.
The Procedure:
- Thoroughly apply the adhesive on the printed design on your backpack until it becomes completely invisible.
- Now cover the design with a portion of the paper.
- Heat your iron and put it on the adhesive-covered area. Move your iron on the printed design with some pressure. The heat will stimulate the glue and causes the design to become stuck to the paper.
- Continue giving heat to the adhesive until the embroidery is not completely glued to the paper.
- Once satisfied with the process, lift the paper and see that the printed design has been stolen by the paper from your backpack.
Conclusion
When it comes to removing embroidery from your backpack or any other fabric, there are no hard rules. This is not rocket science that you cannot learn in days. You only need to spare few minutes to discover different methods and apply them according to your bag’s embroidery.

- 4×4 or 5×7 hoop
- Embroider-able backpack and/or lunchbox
- Madeira polyester embroidery threads
- Finishing Touch bobbin thread
- Titanium Embroidery Needle size 11 or 12
- Fabric remnants for appliqué
- Free .pes embroidery designs
- Fabric marking utensil
- Appliqué scissors
Tools:
- Baby Lock Sewing and Embroidery Machine
- Baby Lock Stick Tear, Tear Away Stabilizer
Steps:
Hoop the Baby Lock Stick-Tear, Tear-Away Stabilizer.
Score it with a pin and tear away the top layer to reveal the sticky stabilizer underneath.
Mark your center line on a pocket, or other embroider-able area of your backpack/lunchbox
Place the hoop under the pocket and line it up straight, and stick it to your stabilizer, smoothing out the fabric and pressing it down firmly.
Place the hooped project into your machine.
You will likely need to support your project with your hands during embroidery.
Choose a straight stitch square shape and make it as big as it will go for the hoop you are using and that will stitch within the embroider-able area of your project
This stitch will act as a basting stitch to hold your project in place during stitching.
You’ll want this shape to stitch first before your embroidery design.
Now pull up the downloadable .pes Unicorn Embroidery Design to your screen (choosing from the 4×4 or 5×7 designs, with or without glasses).
Follow the steps of the design and thread color changes.

After you’ve appliquéd and stitched your embroidery design, you’re done!

Making Isan textiles into sustainable fashion

Since sustainability is a controversial topic in the fashion world and the textile industry, which has grown rapidly and contributed to the waste crisis, the hand-made textile brand BWILD Isan has retrieved cultural identity in local craftsmanship and turned waste material into an artistically woven collection for the first solo exhibition “House Of Fabric-Ation”.

In this exhibition, BWILD developed a new material by using a wide range of local ingredients and recycled fibres from scraps such as lemongrass, pineapples, rice straws, rubber bands, silk, plastics and aluminium foil to create Isan textile designs with beautiful weaving patterns.
Kanchana Shnatepaporn, the founder of BWILD, said: “We used garbage as the main material to create new fibres and reduce cotton production as this fluffy fibre is not eco-friendly due to its high water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. “We see value in all leftovers in the fashion industry, so we tried to reuse them and increase their value in our community. We just don’t want new fabrics but also want local craftsmen to embrace their traditional artisan skills to do embroidery and transform waste into different items, adding more value to their materials.”
Moreover, her brand’s ultimate goal is to support all local artisans working in their hometowns and generate long-term income from their woven products for the local community in the Northeast.
Never Waste A Second Chance.
Inspired by transparent specimens, artist Thakorn Tavornchotivong created a 15m-long, neon-coloured image I’ll Always Love You to express his affection and test his patience by knitting vinyl plastic sheets together using monofilament yarn on a flat knitting machine.
Benjaporn Krutkul shared local beliefs and cultures through auspicious patterns in her elegant black dress. Woven from sai sin threads and dyed with ngai camphor leaves, this cotton dress reflects the Isan ceremony to call for the spiritual force kwan that keeps peace in life.
BWILD brought skilled designers, students and craftsmen from Baan Fang district in Khon Kaen, including the Fabric and Textile Creative Design Center, to improve local wisdom and experiment with new fabric technology for this showcase.
“House Of Fabric-Ation” is part of the Isan Creative Festival, running until Sunday, at the air-conditioned bus terminal in Khon Kaen.
