If you hear sound, try making a call with your iPhone and turn on speakerphone. On iPad or iPod touch, make a FaceTime call. If you still can’t hear, or hear static or crackling, then your network or reception could be the issue. Try to call again later, or from a different location.

How to fix speaker distortion

Your computer’s multimedia experience loses a dimension when distortion overtakes your sound and makes audio content unbearable to listen to. When noise affects all of your computer’s audio output, you have to review each of the elements through which your sound passes in order to pinpoint and address the offending sector.

Speaker or Headphone Fault

Misaligned audio contacts can introduce distortion and feedback into speakers and headphones. Make certain your speaker jack is securely inserted into your computer's "Speaker/Headphone" port. If the distortion persists, try switching out your headphones or speakers to determine whether or not they are the cause of the sound distortion. Shorts from worn cables can produce static and feedback in your speakers. Excessive power can cause the delicate vibrating diaphragm in your speakers to blow out.

Enhancements Active

Review your computer's audio enhancement settings. Audio enhancements can alter the pitch of your computer's audio, skew its equalization or distort it with excessive reverberation. Right-click on the "Speakers" icon in your task bar, and then select the "Sounds" option from its context menu. Click on your computer's playback device in the Sound menu and then click on the "Properties" button. Click on the Speaker Properties menu's "Enhancements" tab to locate active audio enhancements. Check the "Disable All Sound Effects" box or deselect the boxes next to each enhancement you wish to remove.

Audio Driver Issue

An out-of-date or corrupt audio driver can cause latency issues in your computer's audio playback, causing sounds to skip and lag. Visit your sound card manufacturer's support site to locate an update or a fix for known playback issues, or use the Windows Update utility to check for an updated version of your sound card's driver. Move your cursor to the bottom right corner of your display to launch the Windows Charms menu, and then click on the "Settings" charm. Select the charm's "Control Panel" option and then click on the "Windows Update" icon in the Control Panel.

Microphone Feedback

A microphone actively receiving input can cause a feedback loop when it picks up on sounds played from your speakers and your computer sends the microphone's input back out through your speakers. You'll need to create more distance between the microphone and speakers, turn down the speakers, decrease the microphone's sensitivity or disconnect the microphone. Right-click on the "Speakers" icon in your task bar, and then select the "Recording Devices" option from its context menu. Click on your recording device in the Sound menu and then click on its "Properties" button. Use the slider under the "Levels" tab to adjust your microphone's volume or check the option to disable its boost. Use the "Enhancement" tab's "Enable Noise Suppression" or "Enable Acoustic Echo Cancellation" option to alleviate the feedback.

When listening to your favorite music, you may decide to pump up the volume. Nothing can kill the experience more quickly than speaker distortion. Why do some speakers sound fine at low volumes but distort at high volumes? Here are some reasons this may occur.

A common misconception of speaker distortion is that when the amplifier sends too much power, the speakers will blow. In fact, the opposite is true. You’re much more likely to hear distortion or cause damage if your amplifier is under powering the speakers. Higher volume means asking the amplifier for more power. If it is unable to provide enough, your speakers will distort.

If speakers are a low build quality, they can easily be damaged at high volumes, regardless of the amount of power from the amplifier. As volume increases, the drivers extend further and faster. The increase in movement causes heat inside the speaker. If the speaker components are poor quality, then heat damage may occur. Ultimately this leads to distortion. When your speaker is playing at low levels, damage may not be noticeable, but the higher the volume, the more evident this becomes.

The key to preventing distortion means choosing speakers with quality components. Furthermore, you’ll want to choose an amplifier that provides sufficient power for your system. Combining quality speakers with the right amplifier will ensure your system is equipped to handle music at any volume.

    Same thing for me. Tried Atmos on and off. Seems like higher pitched sounds cause it. I covered the bottom speaker and seems like bottom speaker is ok, when playing something on speaker the top speaker is crackling. Doesn’t get better with restart for me.
