How to fold a poster

How to fold a poster

You’ve finally acquired that vintage poster you’ve been waiting for, or found one that’s been stored away for some time. You’d like to display it on the wall, but there’s a deep crease left from a fold line from shipping or being improperly stored. Getting that crease out as much as possible will help you display it flat as it was intended to be. While professional poster restorers have their own ways of handling creases and fold marks, techniques you can do at home can help you flatten that crease that’s been keeping you from hanging up that collectible.

Steam and Weight Method

Set a sheet of corrugated cardboard on the floor in the bathroom, away from the tub or shower. Place the poster face down atop the cardboard.

Close the bathroom door. Turn the shower on to a hot setting, closing the shower curtain, allowing water to run for a few minutes. Alternatively, run hot water in the tub with the drain closed. Turn the water off in the shower or tub, allowing water to sit in the tub if you’ve used the tub method.

Leave the room, closing the door gently behind you. Allow the poster to sit in the steamy room for at least 30 minutes.

Carry the sheet of cardboard and poster out of the bathroom, setting them down on a smooth surface where they can stay for a few days. Place the second cardboard sheet atop the poster, sandwiching the poster in the middle.

Set the pane of glass or the wood flooring atop the cardboard poster sandwich. Allow it to set for a day, then remove the weight and top sheet of cardboard to see if the crease has disappeared. Replace the cardboard and weight, allowing them to set another day or two if the crease is still present.

Iron Method

Place the poster face down atop a sheet of cardboard on a clean work surface, or directly on the ironing board if the poster is small enough to fit.

Plug in the iron to a low setting without steam. Smooth a white sheet or thin ironable cloth over the poster. Iron the creased area of the poster by moving the iron back and forth over the sheet in the appropriate area. Keep the iron moving to avoid burns.

Lift the sheet from time to time to see if the crease has disappeared. If not, iron some more.

Things You Will Need

2 flat sheets of plain (unprinted) corrugated cardboard larger than the poster

Glass pane or thick wood paneling larger than poster

Ironing board (optional)

White sheet or thin cloth

If your poster is valuable or extremely rare, take it to a professional restorer to have the creasing removed. This cuts back on potential for damage. Some restorers add a linen backing which helps remove wrinkles and creases and keeps posters from further damage.

Other heavy objects, such as ceramic tiles, can be used in place of glass or wood to flatten the poster, as long as the entire cardboard surface is covered evenly with the weights.

A crease, especially if it’s been in place for a long time, can potentially remove some of the color from the creased area. Removing the crease will still leave an evident mark or lack of color in such cases. Professional restorers can repaint such areas if the poster is valuable to you.

A slightly humid environment will help your poster flatten between the cardboard pieces more quickly than an extremely dry environment.

If the poster doesn’t respond to the iron method, place a towel over the poster and use a steam setting, using very little water. The steam will relax the crease in the poster. Remove the poster from beneath the steamed towel and set it in a frame or atop a piece of flat cardboard.

Do not turn the iron’s temperature to high or it may burn or discolor the poster. Likewise, keep the iron moving to avoid burning the paper.

All print proofs must be returned to us after review before production of the final product can begin.

Not content with their recent self-titled heavy tome of a book and the quarterly Print Isn’t Dead, the latest publication from the ever-busy People of Print (PoP) will now be landing monthly. Which is just as well, perhaps, as it’s quite a slight publication.

As its name suggests, Posterzine comes as a folded poster. There are other projects like this—Belgium’s Postr is a good example—and it’s a fine format, satisfyingly tactile and immediately a physical thing. It takes a fair amount of space but is worth the little extra effort to expand the 16 pages into its A1 glory. “But is it a magazine?” I hear you ask. PoP founder Marcroy Smith has a definitive answer on that.

Posterzine, issues #1 and #2

But first, let’s just enjoy the scale and printed beauty of this object as it unfolds here. Each issue features a single designer, in this case specialist print studio Heretic (the previous orange issue above featured Eike Konig). An interview on one side is contrasted by a poster on the other; simple, neat, and very desirable.

It’s a clever and ambitious project; moving into a monthly production and distribution model is bold, while the simple editorial premise overcomes the one criticism I’d level at some of PoP’s other work to date—that the content can be weak. This is something Smith is aware of, and issue by issue Print Isn’t Dead has noticeably upped its editorial threshold. With Posterzine it feels like another strong step has been taken.

As a product of People of Print, the print and production is immaculate, right down to a highly critical self-assessment. Talking to Smith he highlighted the “crow’s foot” effect that occurs at corners when you fold a sheet three times (below). He was disappointed, but I enjoyed the nostalgia it brought about of the same effect on fold-out poster publications from the past. One of Smith’s publishing heroes is the late Felix Dennis, who, it’s worth noting, started his career with similar fold-out publications, albeit featuring ’70s celebs like Bruce Lee.

But does a cute format and some special inks a magazine make? One way of establishing this is to submit it to the British Library, who are obliged to collect a copy of every magazine and newspaper in the UK. “I sent the Library a diagram of the particular fold,” says Smith, “and they classified it as a magazine. It’s not folded as a concertina, it opens up like a magazine.” So now we know.

At £5.99 Posterzine is the perfect entry into the world of People of Print, with the added benefit of some smart wall decoration post-read.

One of the most exciting aspects of ordering posters online is the moment they’re delivered. But when they’ve been rolled up in a tube, laying them flat can become a bit of a challenge. To get your poster ready for framing, you must straighten it correctly. Here’s how to flatten a poster to avoid creases and wrinkles.

Method 1: Roll the Poster Back on Itself

  1. Pull the cap off the top of the tube
  2. Remove your poster from the tube by tipping it until it slides partly out. Do not try and pinch or pull it out from inside the tube as this can cause wrinkles and creases
  3. Straighten the poster out on a clean, flat surface so that it’s design down
  4. Carefully roll the poster around the outside of the tube, the opposite way to which it has previously been rolled
  5. Secure with a sticker or rubber bands
  6. Leave this for an hour
  7. Remove sticker or rubber bands and unroll to reveal a flat poster ready for framing

Method 2: Weigh the Poster Down

  1. Repeat steps 1 & 2 from method 1
  2. Roll out and straighten the poster on a clean, flat and hard surface (like a table)
  3. Place something heavy on each corner and in the middle to weigh it down. Books work particularly well
  4. Leave this for 24 hours
  5. Remove weights to reveal a flat poster ready for framing

How to Flatten a Rolled Poster and Remove Wrinkles

There are a few ways you can fix wrinkled posters. Here’s what we suggest.

  1. Roll the poster out onto a flat surface, such as a table. Make sure you straighten it face down with the blank side facing upwards
  2. Place a bed sheet or towel over the poster
  3. Lightly spray the sheet or towel with water until it is slightly damp, not wet
  4. Using the lowest heat setting on your iron, iron the poster through the sheet*
  5. Run the iron over one small area of the fabric at a time until it is dry
  6. Lift the fabric every so often to check for any heat damage on the poster
  7. Repeat the process if wrinkles remain

*Please note: this may cause a slight change to the colours of the ink. instantprint does not accept responsibility or liability for any damage that might be caused.
