So you have a crush you’re dying to kiss, you have your kissing technique down, and you’ve even brushed up on different types of kisses and kissing positions to up your makeout game. The only thing that’s missing to make this the *perfect* kiss? Smooth lips that are ready to be kissed. You might think soft lips aren’t that important, but you’d be surprised what a difference they make when you’re in the middle of a makeout. Sure, you can probably get away with simply applying a moisturizing lip balm, or a gloss to give your lips that extra shine. But if you’re looking to take your makeout to the next level, we’re here to help. We asked Dr. Anna Guanche, author and board-certified celebrity dermatologist for her best tips on making your lips look kissable AF.
From what kind of lip balm to use to how often you should exfoliate, we’re sharing our best-kept secrets (with help from Dr. Guanche) for achieving velvety smooth lips.
1. Opt for a petroleum, jelly-based lip balm
There’s a reason Vaseline and Aquaphor lip balms never go out of style. Dr. Guanche suggests using simple formulas with petroleum jelly. They add a protective barrier, seal in skin moisture, AND prevent or sooth chapped, cracked lips.
2. Or look for balms with beeswax, vitamin E, and tree nut oils
If you’re not really into petroleum jelly, Dr. Guanche also recommends lip balms with beeswax to soothe your lips, vitamin E for its antioxidant and healing properties, or tree nut oils such as shea butter to provide moisture.
3. Look out for SPF
Whatever lip protectant you choose, make sure you look for one with sunscreen. Your lips can get sunburnt, just like your skin does!
4. Gently exfoliate your lips once a week with a DIY scrub
Dr. Guanche suggests making your own sugar scrub in your kitchen. All you need is brown sugar and coconut oil — just mix the two together to create your own edible exfoliant. "Don’t be aggressive," she says. "Exfoliate gently and with circular strokes. Let the granules do the work!"
5. Or get your hands on a scrub that does the trick
If you’re not a fan of DIY, there are also some amazing lip exfoliators and scrubs on the market to help with those chapped lips. Just remember to be as gentle as possible!
6. Moisturize your lips overnight
Especially post-exfoliation, slather on a thick lip balm or petroleum jelly to absorb into your lips overnight. Add this simple extra step into your nighttime skincare routine to ensure your lips are super smooth in the morning.
7. Don’t pick at those flakes
I know, I know. It’s so hard to not pick at the flakes on your chapped lips. But you wouldn’t (at least you shouldn’t!) pick at a pimple or scar on your face, so you should treat your lips the same way.
8. If your lips are super dry, consider using a balm with hydrocortisone
If a simple moisturizing lip balm isn’t enough to revive your chapped, dry lips, try using an over-the-counter cream with hydrocortisone. Dr. Guanche suggests FixMySkin Healing Body Balm, which contains 1% hydrocortisone, to decrease inflammation and promote healing.
9. Avoid licking your lips repeatedly
Though giving your lips a quick lick pre-makeout might make your lips look shiny for a hot second, doing so will actually dry out your lips even more. "Enzymes in your saliva will continue to irritate and de-moisturize broken skin," says Dr. Guanche. So as tempting as it might be, try to stop yourself from licking your lips — use a lip balm instead.
10. Use the right lipstick or gloss
Now that you know how to fully prep your lips, it’s time to choose the right lip product to top off the look. Opt for a hydrating lipstick or easy lip gloss to make your lips look silky smooth. And if you choose a gloss, be sure to find one with a non-sticky texture. The last thing you want is for your lip color to bring out any cracks or dry flakes on your lips!
11. Apply a stain for long-lasting color
You want a pop of color, but you’re worried that matte lipstick might dry out your lips or that kissing someone will mess up a perfect pout. The solution? On top of your moisturizing lipstick or gloss, layer on a lip stain to keep your color intact.
12. Try a lip plumper
If you want to add that oomph to your pout, use a lip plumper to make your lips look bigger naturally.
I’ll admit it: I let myself go a little bit in the winter time. Despite my earnest moisturizing efforts, my hands and face are dry. I can’t remember the last time I had my nails done. The thought of going out in the cold for after work salon appointments when I can instead hurry home to my sweatpants and Netflix account…pass.
But when it comes to my lips, I never slack off. I can’t stand having dry, cracked lips. That’s why I’m sharing our best tips for getting beautiful, healthy and kissable lips, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
- Exfoliate. Remove dry, dead skin flakes by gently brushing your lips with a wet, soft toothbrush or washcloth. I do this about once a week, usually on a weekend morning when I’m not planning on going outside right away since it makes my lips a little sensitive.
- Hydrate. Unlike the rest of your skin, lips tend to dry out and become chapped easily since they do not contain oil glands. Drink lots of water to keep lips from drying out, and avoid licking your lips (it took me years to break the habit!) which also saps moisture.
- Protect and moisturize. Lips receive a lot of sun exposure – particularly the bottom lip. That means they are a common spot for skin cancers. So it’s SUPER IMPORTANT that your daytime lip product includes an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen. And yes, you still need to protect your lips, and the rest of your skin, even if you are wearing a mask! At night I switch to a moisturizing product to help combat nighttime dryness.
- Reapply often. Remember to reapply sun protective lip product every two hours, especially after eating or drinking. I find it helpful to keep my SPF lip balm in several places. I usually have one at my desk, in my purse, in my nightstand and in my bathroom, so I remember to apply right after I brush my teeth. The bonus of this system: you now have an excuse to experiment with different brands and products. Remember to reapply sun-protective lip products at least every two hours.
- Speaking of products: make sure you’re using the right ones. Look for lip products that have been awarded The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. The Seal is only awarded to sun-protective products that meet the standards of our Photobiology Committee (a group of top experts in how the sun interacts with skin), so you can be sure that if a product has our Seal, your lips will be soft and sun-safe.
We all have different lip goals. Some of us want our lips to look fuller. Some of us want our lips to be smoother. Almost all of us want to prevent or improve the look of lines or wrinkles that can form around our lips. We’re here to help! Check out these easy tips for getting great lips.
Tip #1 for Great Lips: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
The skin on our lips is unique. It’s very thin and lacks the oil glands that regulate body temperature and help keep skin smooth. To prevent dry and chapped lips, hydration is key.
Carrying a water bottle with you wherever you go will make it easier to get the recommended daily fluid intake your lips (and the rest of your body) need to stay healthy. You should also consider keeping a hydrating lip balm in your bag. Look for one that’s packed with lip-loving ingredients, such as shea butter and essential oils.
Tip #2 for Great Lips: Take care of the skin around your lips.
You can help prevent fine lines around your mouth that make your lips appear thinner—and you appear older—by giving this area the same anti-aging attention you would the rest of your face. In addition to applying a collagen.
Tip #3 for Great Lips: Use Collagen-Infused Lip Products
While we can’t guarantee the same results you’ll see with injections, our collagen-infused lip gloss options will definitely be less painful to your face and wallet. In addition to making your lips appear fuller, these products won’t settle into lip lines or lip wrinkles and deliver beautiful color payoff in one swipe. Now those are reasons to smile!
They say a smile is world a thousand words and while that may be true, I believe a great smile starts with great lips. Your lips are the front gates to those beautiful teeth and without one another, your smile is lacking. So today, I am sharing 5 Natural Ways to Get Picture Perfect Lips so your smile is always on point!
5 Natural Ways to Get Picture Perfect Lips
Use a good sugar scrub – This is one of those DIY beauty things you can do. Sugar scrubs are great exfoliants and can help remove dead skin cells from your lips and even face. In return, you are left with smooth lips that will look perfect when you apply your lip product.
Drink water – Okay, this might be a given but it’s still worth mentioning. Water is essential to the body and if your not supplying enough to your body, your lips will show it. You know how sometimes your lips are dry no matter what you do? Well, did you try drinking lots of water? If you said no, then go do it right now! Water can be the easiest (and healthiest) of all fixes.
Humidify the air – Most of us sleep a good 8 hours and during that time, you can be doing your lips and overall skin a favor. Simply run a humidifier in your room at night while you sleep. It will help restore moisture in the air and into your skin making your lips look more luscious.
Protect your lips from the sun – Just as with any skin on your body, you should be protecting it from sun rays. Overexposure to sun is damaging and drying. Since lips lack melanin, they really need more protection so try using a product that contains some sort of SPF protectant in it.
Moisturize often – We moisturize our face and body on a daily basis but you may not always think of moisturizing your lips. Keep a moisturizing lip product around you at all times. Also make sure you avoid products that can be overly drying to your lips or contain lots of harmful ingredients as you could be allergic to them. For me, I like to choose products that contain ingredients I can actually pronounce! Can’t think of one off the top of your head? Keep reading because I have the solution for you!
Natural is always better
It’s a new year and many of us trying really hard to take better care of ourselves (myself included). However, I feel in order for you to really do that you have to make an entire lifestyle change. I am talking about watching what you put in and on your body, makeup included.
So I recently found out that Burt’s Bees has a new line of 100% Natural Lipsticks and I just had to give them a try!
I drove to my nearest Target and picked some up. The first issue was that I had a hard time choosing which colors I wanted to try.
After contemplating for awhile I went with the most neutrals colors I could find which were:
- Nile Nude
- Blush Basin
- Iced Iris
Before I tried them on my lips I gave them the good old hand test. Here is how the colors look on my skin. Keep in mind, I have an olive complexion so if you are fair skinned, these might be a bit bolder on you.
After trying them all on, I totally fell in love with the blush basin color and is something I could wear all day.
The thing I truly love about these lipsticks is that they don’t feel like a lipstick. I never used to be a fan simply because lipsticks would dry my lips out and make my lips look frozen in time. I hated the feeling so I would always stick with a lip balm or gloss. Now, that has all changed.
With Burt’s Bees lipsticks my lips are beautifully colored while being hydrated AND these are made with natural products. That means I am looking better and treating myself better too. A total Win-Win!

If you want to engage in lots of heavy making out sessions this Summer, you most certainly need to have a set of kissable lips. Think it this way: If you have kissable lips, a certain someone is more likely to actually WANT to kiss you.
Alternatively, you wouldn’t want to kiss someone with unkissable lips, right? By unkissable, we mean chapped, patchy, darkened, unpleasant to look at or touch. So why have a double standard and not take care of your lips when the process is really simple?
1. Firstly, Get Rid Of The Chapped Skin Cells
Your lips need an exfoliation treatment from time to time. A quick way to exfoliate the lips is using a damp washcloth. Just wet the towel in lukewarm water and use it to lightly massage your lips in a circular motion to get rid of the dead skin cells.

2. Use A Scrub Weekly
You need a scrub to nourish and exfoliate your lips internally as well. You could either buy a lip scrub from the market or get one made at home by simply mixing a spoon of sugar with coconut oil.
A scrub also helps lighten the skin colour of the lips in case they’re darkened because of smoking. In case you want to lighten your lip colour, check this out.
3. Moisturizing Your Lips
Start a habit of keeping a lip balm with you wherever you go. Whenever, you feel dryness on your lips, apply a lip balm to moisturize your lips. Here are some recommendations.
4. Stop Wetting Your Lips With Saliva
Wetting your lips with saliva will only make it worse. Saliva does not inherently have oil in it. Which means dry lips will only become dryer when in contact with saliva.
5. Make Sure You Have Clean Teeth And Fresh Breath
Aside From soft kissable lips, you also need to maintain clean white teeth. Chewing gum helps in weeding out residue from a previous meal. If you have damage that cannot be fixed from brushing, go to a dentist to get a cleaning done. Yellow or stained teeth are a huge turn-off. Similarly, make sure you have fresh breath. Having bad odour will obviously be a deterrent in making you a good kisser at the end of the day.

Using cinnamon oil is another option to get the perfect pout. Cinnamon irritates and inflames the uppermost layer of your skin, due to which the blood flow increases in this area. This will give you red and fuller lips. Do a skin patch test before trying this on your lips. But don’t use it often, try sticking to this method twice a week for plumped lips. 8 Natural Lip Enhancement Tips to Try
1. Use Your Toothbrush
Yes, you read that right. You can use your handy dandy toothbrush to naturally enhance your lips! The smoother your lips are, the more light they can reflect and the bigger, and more luscious they’ll look. Dunk your toothbrush in water and gently buff your lips in a small circular motion. This will also boost your circulation, giving your lips a nice rosy hue.
2. Enhance Your Cupid’s Bow
Enhancing your cupid’s bow (the dip on the top of your lips) will go a long way in giving you fuller, more magnified lips. Dab a pinch of highlighter to the skin on the middle of your upper lip. Your lips will look bigger thanks to the magic of light reflection!
3. Try Some Sugar
Sugar is a natural exfoliant. Mix it will some coconut oil and you’ll have an effective natural lip scrub! Exfoliating your lips with this mix will leave you with fuller lips and a nice rosy colour.
4. Fill Out Your Lips with Liner
Lip liner doesn’t only have to be used to line your lips. To achieve the look of fuller lips, line your lips with a colour that’s one or two shades darker than your natural lip colour, and fill your lips all the way in. Your lips will immediately look richer and more enhanced.
5. Use Lighter Lipstick Shades
Dark lip shades can actually flatten out your lips, making them look smaller. Light lip colours, on the other hand, make your lips look naturally more full. Rock your favourite nude or pale pink shades to enhance the look of your lips!
6. Go for Gloss
You’ve heard us talking about the importance of reflecting light off your lips quite a few times now. One of the best ways to do this? A shiny, shimmer-flecked lip gloss! Use a clear lipgloss on the middle of your lips for the ultimate pout highlight.
7. The Ice(ing) on the Cake
Ice is another great tip for natural lip enhancement. Massage an ice cube on your lips for 2 minutes. This will compress your blood vessels, making them look red and plump!
8. Make a DIY Lip Mask
Why not try a lip mask for fuller lips? One of the most effective DIY lip masks is the ‘Bomb Lip Plumper’ by My Awesome Beauty! Combine ginger powder, cayenne powder, cinnamon powder, peppermint oil and olive oil. Massage it in for 20 seconds and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes. In the age of Instagram, saying you want a “plump pout” usually conjures images of lavishly large, pillowlike lips. And if that’s your thing? Go for it. But for some, wanting fuller lips just means something supple and soft: Your lips, just with a bit more oomph. Where does one turn for a look like this, sans needles and celebrity-endorsed lip kits? Well, like the rest of your body, some of it starts internally, and the rest just takes a few easy swaps:
Exfoliate with lip scrubs.
In order to get your lips plumped, you have to prep them. Makeup artist Katherine Dorn suggests exfoliating “by using small circles on the lips and then rinse and then use a vitamin C lip treatment to hydrate and moisturize.” (Find our favorite scrubs here.) Shawna Jones, PA-C, aesthetic nurse practitioner, recommends DIY scrub: “Make your own scrub using pantry items such as coconut oil and brown sugar to eliminate dry skin.”
Keep the skin moisturized.
Keep your skin plump and supple with hydrating and conditioning lip products. Much like the rest of your skin, moisturizers will keep the area looking plush and healthy. But the delicate lip area in particular is thinner and more sensitive than other areas (much like the eyes!), so it may need a bit of extra care.
Moringa-based formula which feeds your skin antioxidants, instantly hydrates, and protects your lips
Look for options that contain botanical oils, butters, antioxidants, and plush waxes. Butters—like cocoa and shea—provide a softening texture. Oils and lipids feed the skin fatty acids and can add a protecting coat for the barrier. Antioxidants help fight free radicals. And waxes can help harden the base, as well as make the formula more occlusive.
A most basic function that will go a long way, no matter what products you use, is making sure you stay hydrated. Jones says this is her No. 1 rule. “Drink plenty of fluids every day as a part of your daily routine.” Research backs this up as studies have shown that adequate amounts of water increase dermal thickness of the skin. Translation: More plump skin all over, including the lips.
Take collagen supplements.
Achieving fuller lips is just as much about playing the long game as it is finding quick fixes. We say this because lip size naturally thins over time, research shows. One study measured the differences in lip size between two age groups (one in their 20s, the other 60-plus) and on average, lip volume decreased by 25% between the younger and older age groups. So to make sure you have fuller, plump lips for longer, it requires preventive aging measures. This can include things like proper daily skin care, but it also means going internally. One way to get more youthful-looking skin is hydrolyzed collagen supplements. These have been shown to maintain dermal thickness, support elasticity, and natural moisture levels.
Check out our favorite collagen supplements here.
“Don’t forget sun protection,” says Jones. “Protecting your lips from the sun is just as important as protecting your face. Look for products that have a physical sunblock [titanium dioxide and zinc oxide]. Some also contain other moisturizing actives, like hyaluronic acid, to hydrate and smooth the lips.” When people think of UV damage, they likely think sun spots and wrinkles, but it also causes loss of volume: This happens because the UV rays not only speed up collagen loss but also hinder your body’s ability to produce healthy levels. One human study found that exposure to UV rays showed significant loss of type I collagen.
Apply a hyaluronic acid serum.
Speaking of hyaluronic acid, filling out your pout naturally can be done with a topical serum. Like water to dry soil, your parched lips will suck it up and soon become plump with moisture. This is because HA is an ingredient that can pull in up to 1,000 times its weight in water. However, whenever you use an HA serum, be sure to top it off with an occlusive lip product, like an oil or wax-based balm. This is because HA is a humectant, and while these types of hydrators are great for attracting moisture, they’re not great at holding it in the dermis long term. But if you seal it in with a thicker product, you’ll find your lips will stay soft almost all day long.
Try essential oils.
According to naturopathic doctor Tess Marshall, N.D., essential oils are a popular way to plump your lips naturally. “Even unnatural products use these ingredients for their properties,” she says. She suggests using essential oils of cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and peppermint, which are the most effective. (Cinnamon can cause contact dermatitis, so spot-test on your arm first.) They mildly stimulate the lips, which boosts circulation, thereby creating a localized “swollen” appearance. You can even DIY your own essential oil lip plumper. First, find an organic, clear lip gloss of your choice, and then combine three drops of peppermint essential oil and a pinch of cayenne powder in a small dish. Mix using the gloss’s wand, then apply on your lips for a quick pucker up.
Consider gua sha.
This daily habit is beloved by natural beauty experts for sculpting the face and encouraging lymphatic drainage. And with one quick move, your gua sha stone can become a natural lip plumper, too. For this, you need a stone that has a ribbed or scalloped side. Then, as holistic esthetician and mindbodygreen Collective member Britta Plug explains to us here, push your lips out and hold with your non-gua-sha hand. With the rippled edge of the stone, move it up and down quickly along the outer edges to cause friction, which causes the plump appearance.
Use clean lipsticks and liner.
Preventing sun damage, boosting moisture, and using essential oils are all great ways to plump your lips naturally, but if you are looking for fuller lips immediately, use makeup to create the illusion. Use a lip liner that is one to two shades darker than your natural lip color, before applying lipstick, slightly overdrawing your lips. (Meaning trace just outside your natural lip line, no further or else it can look cartoonish.) Next, use a lipstick that is near your natural hue to fill out your pout. Darker colors tend to make your lips appear flat. Finish by applying clear lip gloss to the center of your lips. This will reflect light and create a fuller-looking lip.
Moringa-based formula which feeds your skin antioxidants, instantly hydrates, and protects your lips
Chapped lips commonly occur when your lips are dry, sore, or cracked. You may get chapped lips when the weather is cold and dry, or when you are dehydrated. Unlike the rest of your skin, your lips don’t have oil glands and can’t produce any natural oils to prevent it from drying. This means without proper care, your lips may dry out often.
If your favorite lip balm isn’t doing the trick to get rid of chapped lips, then you should try out these five easy home remedies instead.
1. Apply petroleum jelly
Petroleum jelly is a key ingredient in many lip balms because it helps provide the skin with a protective barrier to lock in moisture. This is essential because it prevents your lips from drying out.
But petroleum jelly is an occlusive, which means that it will only protect your lips from moisture loss, rather than providing moisture itself. The best way to use petroleum jelly for chapped lips is to:
- Apply lip balm first, to provide moisture to your lips.
- Lock in the moisture with a layer of petroleum jelly.
In rare cases, some people might encounter an allergic reaction to petroleum jelly. If you experience any swelling or stinging when using it, you might be allergic and should discontinue use immediately.
2. Try aloe vera
Aloe vera is a succulent plant that produces a moisturizing gel. It works by pulling moisture from the air into the surface of the skin. This helps to keep your lips hydrated and prevents them from drying out.
Aloe vera also contains molecules called polysaccharides, which helps moisture bind to your skin, keeping your lips hydrated. It is especially helpful for cracked lips since the polysaccharides encourage the skin to generate new cells, which helps sores to heal quickly.
You can grow your own aloe vera plant and get the gel from its leaves, or buy some aloe vera gel at your local beauty store. Some people experience allergic reactions to aloe vera, so it’s advisable to do a patch test for possible allergic reactions first.
3. Use honey
Honey is a great remedy for chapped lips because it’s a humectant, meaning that it pulls moisture from the air into your lips. Honey is also known for its healing properties and may help relieve sores and cracks caused by chapped lips.
In addition, honey has antibacterial properties that prevent you from developing an infection from these cracks and sores, says Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, and skincare expert, affiliated with Beth Israel Medical Center and Jacobi Medical Center.
“Honey works as a mild exfoliator and can help remove dry, dead skin from the lips,” says Vasyukevich.
Here’s how you can use honey to moisturize your lips:
- Use a clean finger or a cotton swab to put a thin layer on your lips.
- Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes and then wipe it off.
Honey is sweet, so resist the urge to lick it off, as this will only worsen your chapped lips. A great way to avoid this is by applying it before you go to sleep, and leaving it on overnight.
4. Rub coconut oil
Coconut oil is an emollient, which means it’s great for locking in moisture in your lips and preventing them from drying out.
Coconut oil also has anti-inflammatory properties. This means that it can help relieve the pain and discomfort that sometimes accompanies cracked lips. Coconut oil’s antibacterial properties also help to keep your lips germ free, preventing you from getting an infection from the open sores. You can also combine it with some sugar and use it as a gentle exfoliant to help you get rid of the dead skin cells on your lips.
5. Do sugar exfoliation
When dead skin cells build up on your lips, they prevent your lips from getting the moisture they need. Gently exfoliating your skin with a sugar scrub helps to remove dead skin cells caused by chapping.
Making a sugar scrub is easy. All you need to do is follow these steps:
- Put one tablespoon of sugar and one tablespoon of coconut oil or honey into a bowl.
- Mix thoroughly and use a clean finger to apply the scrub onto your lips.
- With the scrub, gently rub your lips in a circular motion for a minute.
- Wipe off the excess scrub when you are done.
- Apply petroleum jelly or some coconut oil, to restore moisture.
Make sure to always follow a sugar scrub with a moisturizing treatment. “If you forget to moisturize following lips scrubs, it can actually worsen chapped lips,” Vasyukevich says.
How to prevent chapped lips
Your lips get chapped when they are dry, which is why keeping them well moisturized at all times is the best way to prevent chapped lips.
You also want to avoid licking your lips when they are dry. While using saliva to moisten your lips might seem like a logical way to combat dryness, it actually causes your lips to dry out even quicker. Instead, use a lip moisturizer or one of the homemade remedies above.
“The best way to prevent chapped lips is to be consistent with the lip moisturizing treatments you use,” says Vasyukevich. “Ensure that you are applying moisturizer multiple times throughout the day, and adjust applications based on the climate or weather conditions. If you are living in colder, dryer temperatures, it is best to use these treatments on a more regular basis.”
Chapped lips can be a pesky problem. But to get rid of them, there are many natural remedies you can whip up at home, with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. You can also use a combination of these home remedies to help you get rid of your chapped lips permanently.
