Hydration works twofold: You’ll want to coat the lips with hydrating ingredients and make sure you get enough water (the first sign of dehydration is often dry lips, in case you’re unaware). Studies have even shown that adequate amounts of water can increase the dermal thickness of the skin—including the lips.

In terms of hydrating ingredients to swipe on, look for emollients that build up the skin barrier, such as fatty acids, butters, and oils. Humectants are great, but you might not want to use them as your sole moisturizer: “Lip balms that contain only humectant ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, can actually make lips more dry because they attract moisture, and if the air is very low in humidity, then they can pull moisture out of the skin, and then the moisture evaporates away,” board-certified dermatologist Hadley King, M.D., told mbg about healing lip cracks.

Alternatively, just use a soft toothbrush to exfoliate your lips. Rub the toothbrush gently on your lips in a circular motion while you’re in the shower, after brushing, or before going to bed.

If you’re feeling fancy, make your own lip scrub! Take some sugar and honey or olive oil, apply on your lips and rub gently. Allow to sit on your lips for 10-15 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Moisturise daily
Never go a single day without moisturising your lips, even if you don’t feel the dryness! Remember that the skin on your lips is thinner than that on your face and body, which means it needs extra nourishment.

Slathering on lip balm during the day and reapplying frequently can help, but it can be addictive. If you’re looking for a way to keep the moisture locked in, use petroleum jelly. Apply twice a day or as needed for chapped lips.

Better yet, go for natural oils to keep lips hydrated. Coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, sunflower oil, and jojoba oil are great as they are readily absorbed into the skin, contain antioxidants, and are packed with essential fatty acids!

Despite looking like medicated ointments, there’s a reason Vaseline sells like hotcakes. These are efficient in adding a protective barrier on your skin and also locking in skin moisture to prevent flaky lips.

Lip balms with beeswax are good for soothing your lips, vitamin E is known for its antioxidant and healing properties or tree nut oils such as shea butter are great at providing moisture to your lips.

For a DIY scrub, you need brown sugar and coconut oil — just mix the two together to create your own edible exfoliant. But make sure that you’re not aggressive with the exfoliation. Gently massage in circular strokes for 2-3 minutes.

5. Don’t Pick At Those Flakes With Your Fingers
While it might be an unconscious urge, picking your chapped lips can make things a lot worse. You can end up with a scar or a pimple.

6. Avoid Licking Your Lips Constantly

While licking your lips might give you temporary relief, in the long run, it can be more drying and can leave yours with visibly chapped and flaky lips. This is because enzymes in your saliva will continue to irritate and de-moisturize broken skin.

Today is a HUGE day for your lips: either you have a date and are planning on some serious smooching, or you don't have a date and you want to make everyone who is not smooching you super jealous. (Or, you're heading out with girlfriends and kissing a stranger. #NoJudgment )

So, I've worked out how to get awesome, kissable lips in under five (Yes, you can do this on the subway en route to your date or in the bathroom after dessert). Here's the run down:

  • Exfoliate: I know, there are a zillion different ways to exfoliate lips: dry toothbrush, drippy pre-made lip scrubs, a DIY mix of sugar and coconut oil, etc. But lately, I've been depending on my The Body Shop Lip Scuff, $13, which is an exfoliating and hydrating stick. It's not messy. It's easy to use on the go; just wipe it off with a tissue after applying.
  • Hydrate: I am a huge fan of SuperSmile's new Ultimate Lip Balm, $22; an insane blend of hydrating boswellia oil and hylauronic acid. Not only does it taste delish (kinda like vanilla-dusted almonds), it reactivates every time you lick your lips. For reals, people. It's genius.
  • Color: Once your balm is absorbed and good to go, layer on a pretty, kissable color (You know, the ones that won't make your man look like a clown post kiss. I've done it. It's awkward. He's a trooper.) I'm a big fan of stains, since they are guaranteed not to budge. Try Hourglass Aura Sheer Lip Stain in Scarlet, $26, which is creamy and sexy, but won't budge.

Oh, and most importantly: Skip the plumpers! No one wants their lips to burn or tingle when they kiss you and, after asking a bunch of guys, they don't even really like how it looks. (Granted, I had to show plumped and unplumped pictures of a certain unmentionable celeb's lips).

Eating, talking, pouting, and smiling – our lips are always in action. But if you want to get some action on this Valentine’s Day, you have to make sure they’re as kissable as can be! You’d be surprised to hear that the suppleness, shade, and overall appearance of your lips can determine whether or not you get a smooch at the end of the date. Lips are also one of the tenderest parts of our body – with far fewer layers of skin than other organs. That makes them especially sensitive to even the faintest of touch. Which is great for kissing, but makes lips a special category of skincare. Read on to take your supple lips to a whole new level of kissable.

We tend to instinctively lick, bite or pick our lips in certain situations. But remember: no biting or licking (unless your partner asks for it). It’s important not to make it a habit because it has a detrimental effect on the condition and appearance of your lips. Saliva doesn’t have the ingredients necessary to keep lips happy and chap-free. Dry lips only become dryer in contact with saliva – in fact, it strips the lips of their natural moisture. Biting or picking them makes it only worse. For a boost of moisture, look for specially formulated balms with ingredients like beeswax, coconut oil, and sunflower seed oil. Some balms go the extra length of adding Vitamin E and rosemary leaf extracts to give the lips a boost of antioxidants. A good balm goes a long way in protecting and moisturizing your lips.

Your diet influences every cell and organ in your body, including your lips. Design your diet carefully with kissable lips in mind. Hydrating from the inside is essential. 1. Use lip balm
To help in lock in moisture, I swipe on my favorite lip balm before stepping into the shower each morning and let the steam help trap the moisture in. Make sure to apply lip balm consistently throughout the day, especially during extreme temperature conditions. Hot and cold weather make our lips extra sensitive to dryness, so apply a moisturizing lip balm containing vitamin E and with SPF to protect your lips from sun exposure. 2. Clean lips
Use lemon juice to help remove dirt and brighten your lips. Rub the juice on your lips for five minutes and then wipe off and admire the brighter, cleaner appearance.

3. Weekly Scrub
Once a week, exfoliate your lips (as you do with your face) to help remove dead skin cells. You can try a mixture of brown sugar and olive, coconut or almond oil and apply using your fingertip in circular motion across your lips. Wipe off and then apply a lip moisturizer–try cocoa butter for its ultimate moisturizing effects.

4. Use Aloe Vera Gel
To help keep your lips hydrated, apply aloe vera gel and leave on for 15 minutes before bed. Wash off with warm water.

5. Massage lips
Massage your lips daily to increases blood flow. You can massage your lips by rotating your fingertips in a circular motion across your lips, or by pressing your fingertips into the center of your lips and then outward.

6. Choose the right lip gloss
Before adding your gloss, apply lip balm first so your lips stay supple and soft. For the most flattering color, make sure the lip gloss is one to two shades darker than your natural lip color. For fair skin, try nude or apricot shades. For medium skin, try mauve, deep burgundy or berry shades. And for dark skin, try plum, red or caramel colors. Always keep your lips moisturised. Never go to bed without applying a bit of nourishing lip treatment like a lip balm or chapstick. Try cocoa butter or coconut oil for an extra bit of pampering to keep lips soft. During the day and especially when you are going to be out in the sun, be sure that your lipstick, lip gloss or chapstick has a Sun Protection Factor or SPF of 15 or higher. The SPF is a measure of how well the sunscreen will protect against sunburn.

Don’t bite

Biting or picking at dry skin on your lips can cause unnecessary redness and bleeding. Always apply chapstick whenever you feel your lips are dry.

Drink water

If you lips are constantly dry or cracked, this could be a sign of dehydration. This means you are not drinking enough water. Drink at least eight glasses of water throughout your day to keep hydrated.

Wearing lip gloss or lipstick

Create an even outline or shape of your lips using a lip liner. Then fill in with a colour tinted lip gloss. If you are wearing a dark lipstick colour, keep colouring to your cheeks and eyelids soft. Don’t forget a well-defined brow and some mascara. Nude or lighter lip colours are best matched with a natural make-up look. Use eye shadow and blush to match your skin tone.

It’s well known that cold winter weather can dry out skin. That’s why we all need to keep it well nourished through these icy, windswept days. The cold temperatures also play real havoc with your lips, often leaving them chapped and sore. That’s not ideal at any time of year, but it’s especially unhelpful given that Valentine’s Day is round the corner. So we thought we’d bring you a few suggestions to get your lips in to tip-top condition. Read on for kissable lips in three easy steps.

Step One: Exfoliate

Just like the rest of our skin, lips benefit from a little gentle exfoliation now and then. It helps to loosen dead skin and help the newly formed healthy cells that lie underneath take their turn at the surface. newly formed cells are robust enough to cope with tough weather conditions so are able to retain moisture better than the older damaged cells can. Strong young cells can protect you better and are less likely to lead to split, sore lips. The trick is to exfoliate very gently and infrequently (once or twice a week will do). Overdoing exfoliation anywhere on your body will wear out the surface of even healthy cells and leave them vulnerable. Here are three of our favourite ways to smooth away the rough.

  • Use a very soft bristled toothbrush, dampen in warm water and rub very gently using a small circular motion.
  • Apply a generous dab of your usual lip balm to your fingertip and then dip it in to a spoonful of fine grain sugar (soft brown sugar works well). Apply to your lips and rub gently before wiping off. Alternatively, a tiny bit of sugar mixed with a drop of olive oil can do the same trick (though it can get a little messy and doesn’t taste that great).

If that sounds expensive, try making your own lip balm. You’ll also be avoiding moisture-drawing ingredients such as camphor and menthol, which are often used in conventional lip products.

2. Use natural lipstick – or make your own

Lipstick is part of every woman’s make-up bag. But not all lipsticks are created equal! Those long-lasting ones, for example, will dry out your lips the more you wear them. Not to mention the array of nasty ingredients you can find in most commercially-available products. Fragrance? No thanks!

Look for lipstick made with natural ingredients, especially those that actually moisturize with plant oils, beeswax or vitamin E. You can check out our ultimate guide to non-toxic lipstick here.

Alternatively, make your own lip products – the color won’t be so intense, but you get complete control over the ingredients that go inside. Add 1/2 teaspoon of mineral glitter into a tablespoon of melted cocoa butter to keep your lips bright, smooth and shiny all year long. 3. Exfoliate with a lip scrub

The thin skin on our lips dries out the easiest, and it naturally has less water than other parts of our faces. This makes sloughing off dead skin with an exfoliant an important step in getting soft and smooth lips.

Exfoliating your lips can be as low-effort as using a soft toothbrush on them. Or you can opt for a lip scrub, which might just be the easiest beauty product to DIY. You only need to mix 2-4 ingredients, and you don’t need big quantities of either.

4. Dedicate a toothbrush for your lips

After cleansing your face, pour a little facial oil (or a regular carrier oil like grapeseed or almond) onto a clean toothbrush and gently polish your lips. Massage the remaining oil into your lips.

Most facial masks shouldn’t be applied to the lips, and that makes sense – the thinner, sensitive skin in the area doesn’t have the same needs as the rest of your face. A mask that’s designed especially for your lips – now that’s something you should add to your arsenal!

Castor oil is a heavy vegetable oil that provides a protective barrier against water loss on the skin. Dab on a layer of castor oil before bed to lock in moisture overnight.

Combine them with a thick carrier oil like jojoba or avocado or an emolient like shea or cocoa butter for best results.
